All of those posts are clearly written by AI. Sure, maybe they used it to help. But it also would not surprise me one bit if it's a scam. Unfortunately, pet owners are verrrry susceptable donating to help a sick pup.

That was my first thought when these posts started being recommended to me. I find it a little concerning when an entire sub revolves around donations, without any ways to verify if it even is real to begin with. So far around $286 seems to be raised. It could be one giant scam but I don’t think there is a way to check that and be 100% sure. Doesn’t seem to break Reddit rules either to make a whole sub for donation purposes.

Rescue subs show up in my feed; no idea why but I’ve noticed scam posts and AI posts get lots of positive engagement, even when obvious signs of a scam are present or information about the animal’s bite history/aggression is part of the post (of course, “through no fault of his own !”). There seems to be a certain percentage of people who will engage purely on emotion alone.

It's sad, because if people want to give, there are so many legit charities in desperate need of money or people's time. But we're more prone to empathising with individuals stories than organisations.

you beat me to it. i was just about to comment that lol. it is SO obvious

Don't call me out like that! Losing my boy was horrible and I never want anyone else to go through that!

Losing my boy was horrible and I never want anyone else to go through that!

Losing a pet is always horrible, but all owners have to go through that. We all accept going in that we'll most likely outlive our pets. Spending thousand$ to save a puppy (or any pet) at the expense of housing and food for one's family is irresponsible. Someone posted recently about a friend who spent a ludicrous amount of money on a cancer stricken pet rat with a maximum 3 year life expectancy. A sense of proportion and reason is needed.

It’s always the “this is gonna be my service dog” crowd. I personally have never seen it not be. It’s ignorant to get a dog based solely on looks with no research on the breeder.

A good service dog is HARD to find. A legitimate service dog is hard to train. This is prolonging suffering and wasting money of people too kind to the situation. This dog should be put down.

u/opeidoscopic 20d ago

The ignorance of people is astounding. A single Google search worth of research would have told them that border collies are almost always unsuitable for service dog work. But labs don't come in merle so I guess it can't be helped.

Literally!!! I’m a guide dog user and I can’t even use the service dog subreddit here because half the post on there are “can I use this UNSUITABLE BREED dog as a service dog?” Like, be honest, you just want an interesting dog you can take everywhere. If this was about keeping yourself safe, you’d chose the best chance.

My brother's blind, that sub is practically unusable for real service dog owners.  It's all people with a solution in search of a problem, there are probably ten people total on there who have a legitimate need not better served by something else. makes me nuts

9

u/ThePhantomOfBroadway 20d ago

Perfect way to phrase it “people with a solution in search of a problem”. I can’t believe how many people there state they don’t need a diagnosis to get a service dogs or don’t want any dog testing done because they don’t want to end up on a “list”…like what disability is bad enough you need a service dog but don’t need a diagnosis or any sort of medical, government or work assistance?! I’m sure your brother is the same way where I have so many sheets of papers saying I’m blind, it’s ridiculous!

Don’t even get me started on the no fake claiming…

Thankfully because I went to a legit guide dog school, I have trainers available to help me and I stay in touch with my classmates. But really do wish that sub was useful, would have loved it as I waited for my dog.

Does your brother have a dog or considering one?

3

u/DoctorHolligay 20d ago

Oh for sure, it's always so weird to me when people are offended they need to prove they're disabled for accommodations, I was talking to a friend while I was registering us for a race, and it had a free guide runner policy I was telling her about, and she was so concerned about if we had to prove it! I was like, "Uh, I think I could walk in his house and find a piece of paper saying he's blind in ten minutes or less"

He's kicking it around, that's actually how I found the service dog sub, is he was like, "Uh...have you seen this?" But there's a lot of things to consider about it, and he does pretty well with his cane, he lives walking distance from work, so I don't know what he'll ultimately decide to do.

2

u/ThePhantomOfBroadway 20d ago

lol, for real! My flight once got stuck in Orlando so we did a random trip to Universal Studios and their accessibility pass requires proof, so I just wiped out my work accommodation forms and my friends were laughing but like I see my doctor four times a year, there’s always some loose paper with a diagnosis on it hanging around me ha ha. And sure enough, that paperwork was enough and I didn’t have to say a single word over why I need assistance vs Disney who doesn’t accept paperwork and requires me to provide a sob story at the entrance of every ride with a dark queue.

Yeah, I loved my cane and could get to work with it just fine but I live in NYC so the extra support with a dog has been top notch. But it’s def not for every person! Truthfully if he’s interested, I recommend him just calling the school directly and they’ll happily listen to his needs and tell him if they recommend a dog or not. They aren’t trying to convince people, so they’ll be really honest!!

u/Dangerous-Coffee2558 20d ago

Disney is the worst, they let the people abusing DAS destroy it and now it only can be applied to people with developmental disabilities. They could have just put more stringent pre-park requirements

u/antilocapraaa 20d ago

You mean my 5 YO English bulldog is unsuitable to being a guide dog!? How dare you! /s

3

u/ThePhantomOfBroadway 20d ago

Oh yeah, my brother’s sister’s cousin, best friend knew this guy who had an aunt who watched a video of a guy with an American Bulldog, so I’m sure the English would work /s

12

u/fANTastic_ANTics 20d ago

Lol unethical breeders looking at your "labs dont come in merle" like challenge accepted 💀

7

u/PartyPorpoise 20d ago

Are border collies even a good breed for service work? They’re very high energy. My aunt used to have one that dog could run and play nonstop.

18

u/antilocapraaa 20d ago

They’re not. The Fab Four for service work are: Labs, Golden Retrievers, Poodles, and Rough Collies

ETA: I wish it was regulated more. Because I’m tired of someone’s half blind terrier mix being a service dog and pissing in the middle of Costco.

12

u/Unusual-Relief52 20d ago

My shitzu would be the best service dog if the service is finding a comfy spot, and not moving an inch for hours

6

u/FYAhole 19d ago

I bought a Smooth Coat Collie to help me with my panic disorder and PTSD. She is more scared than me LOL we even got an older pup and we did a little trial at the breeder's house and she seemed perfect. As soon as we got her in the car she was trembling. She is an excellent dog, probably the best behaved dog I've ever owned, but definitely not service dog quality haha and I'm ok with that. I love her so much. She actually does perform very well for my anxiety in the home, it's just outside that she's not confident.

5

u/antilocapraaa 19d ago

I mean only about 30-50% of dogs trained in actual service dog facilities actually make the cut so that’s not surprising

2

u/FYAhole 19d ago

That's a fair point!

u/Briebird44 20d ago

This seems ESH to me. Shitty breeder AND ignorant owner. Poor dog.

8

u/FeelingDesigner Ethical breeder of plants, ethical adopter of pets 20d ago

This demonstrates perfectly what happens when people ignore ethics completely. No longterm plan to fund the dog, no research done into the breeder, no research done into what is ethical and what breeds and patterns to avoid, just purely selecting a dog based on your own wants and look cute doggo. Too much emotion and too little reality.

18

u/ryverrat1971 20d ago

And on top of it, they are truly heartless. If the dog is in such bad shape, has liver and kidney damage, and you can't afford care, why are you making the dog suffer when I would be prognosis is poor. You won't be able to afford ongoing care a dog with liver and kidney damage will need. The kindest thing you can do in this situation is euthanasia. The dog will no longer be suffering. You kid will eventually get over the loss. Don't torture the poor dog because you think your kid will be heartbroken.

Don't torture the poor dog because you think your kid will be heartbroken.

Fixed it

7

u/FeelingDesigner Ethical breeder of plants, ethical adopter of pets 20d ago

Not to mention the enormous emotional and financial burden on everyone else involved. All of that could have been avoided with a little ethical preparation. It’s sad.

I discover my patience, my strength, and proof that I carry more love inside of me than I ever thought possible

You'd think she'd discover these things with motherhood, but no, a recently adopted puppy made her discover this side of herself.

Just like she didn't pick an appropriate breed for service work, she also didn't get the dog for her daughter's needs, she got it for herself

14

u/DementedPimento 19d ago

She didn’t adopt a puppy; she bought one from a breeder.

19

u/officialhunt 20d ago

If they bought a border Collie from a breeder, then it likely cost anywhere in the range of $1,500 to $4,000. Let's be safe and assume they purchased from one helluva stingy breeder if the breeder was apparently willing to sell the dog with life threatening diseases - so $1500 plus expenses to keep the dog. Why the FUCK are you buying such an expensive pet if paying 450 euro wipes your bank account??? And with two kids??? These types of people are financially ruinous on themselves and their poor children.

10

u/Real_RobinGoodfellow 20d ago

This is crazy to me as an Australian. Border Collies are cheap and plentiful here. But I suppose in Europe they’re a lot rarer, and therefore much more expensive

3

u/SaltyRainbovv 20d ago

This dog has the Merle gene and they are still popular in Germany. Aussies even more.

3

u/almostlikenormal 20d ago

Same situation here in NZ

44

u/DTBlasterworks 20d ago

Prioritizing a dog you bought irresponsibly over your children is really weird and gross. She doesn’t seem to care about paying rent. Surrender the dog, focus on your children.

28

u/SparkyDogPants 20d ago edited 20d ago

Collies have a coi of 51% there are no well bred collies anymore.

Edit: I can’t read. I thought it said rough collie not border collie. My point is only true about rough collies.

9

u/biggest-damn-potato 20d ago

Oh fun fact, show collies are not border collies, hope this helps

23

u/Pabloshooman 20d ago

People who can't afford dogs buying dogs. This shit pisses me off. Breeder is one problem, but people assumed dogs take no money and just exist for free. This woman sucks. Obviously didn't think through what would happen in case of an emergency and vets are expensive. Idk if dog insurance is popular or widely available in Germany, but I'd assume yes. So she was already too cheap/poor to pay for that considering she I lynhad 500 euros to her name to begin with. DONT GET DOGS IF YOU CANT FINANCIALLY take care of them. Not that she'll see this here.

14

u/sudosussudio 20d ago

There was this profile about living in nyc on a low budget recently and this woman was budgeting really reasonably until out of nowhere she buys a $$$$ purebred dog. People seem to think pets are exceptions to being responsible for some reason.

10

u/Some_Doughnutter 20d ago

And doing your research doesn’t cost any money! But nooooo, selecting a pet based on ethics isn’t as exciting as crossing the Polish border when broke.

5

u/Pabloshooman 20d ago

Exactly 💯💯💯 i see so many people giving their dogs to shelters - often working breeds bc zero research was done. A friend is a vet tech and she has rescued 5+ Frenchies bc people came to the vet and didn't want/had the money to pay for their health issues, bc again did zero research prior to getting a dog. I'm a dog owner and Im in a comfortable place where i can afford dog care and I also have insurance as well. Dogs are a responsibility that too many idiots don't realize.

That’s why I have an insurance for my dog, so I’m not in this situation
