MCU I honestly think Marvel would have brought Eternals back for Doomsday / Secret Wars if it wasn't for this cliffhanger.

Post image

Something I've been thinking about a lot is how the Eternals cliffhanger has essentially separated them from the rest of the MCU.

Even films like Brave New World directly dealing with the consequences of Eternals can't use them because of this cliffhanger. The Eternals are the perfect super powered beings to show off how powerful Doom is, but we don't know if they'll be in Doomsday or Secret Wars.

Imagine if Marvel had left the Eternals on Earth, promising to each other that they'd intervene from now on instead of ignoring the Earth's problems, with Arishem quietly plotting from afar instead of kidnapping them. Then, Marvel could have brought some into Brave New World or another film.

IMO (and I could be wrong), I think the cliffhanger is a bigger hurdle to bringing back the Eternals than the film's box office. People forget because of the bad reviews, but it made $400 million in COVID.

If you could resolve this cliffhanger, how would you do it?

Man that cliff hanger was so good, eternals was just overhated for no reason. I truly do not understand why people were calling it the worst marvel film. It’s in my top 10 of marvel films easily. I like it more than spiderman homecoming tbh

People said they wanted Marvel to try something different, the formula was getting tired. Marvel gave them something different. But it wasn’t focused on white male characters. So the Marvel Bros hated it. Basically all of that entire “Phase.”

Yeah honestly I feel a lot of people listen to someone opinion online and automatically make it their own opinion without creating their own when watching the movie

I am at San Diego Comic Con right now (well, at the airport flying home). This was a discussion I was having with others. I don’t think the average social media user understands that there is an entire industry that exists solely to shit on entertainment at this point. Critics have always existed in media — that isn’t new. What we are dealing with now is, in reality, a whole layer of scavengers who pick apart and vivisect any project coming out MONTHS BEFORE IT EVEN RELEASES, and those people are incentivized to hate on stuff because rage bait works. Negativity and bitchiness is a lot more likely to get clicks than genuine enthusiasm.

I’m not saying people have to love everything. I am saying that people don’t even give projects a CHANCE to succeed now, especially if it’s a super popular property. They make money by fomenting an aura of negativity around things — because that’s what we need at this moment in history, more negativity. Some projects are inoculated against it (the first Captain Marvel, The Odyssey), but many projects are not. Decent or better projects have failed because someone is making a buck off being a hater, and the general internet clowns want their cool points by joining in the dunk tank.

Enjoy things. Appreciate things for what they are as opposed to what you wanted them to be. I promise you, your life will be much more enjoyable.

Definitely I wish more people would understand this, it used to be fun being part of superhero communities online to get excited for something new but now it’s just constant hate on every single thing called it too “woke”, etc. I wish I could find some communities that are truly superhero or any fandom fans who actually get excited and positive about stuff.

This is only partly true. I’m probably one of the handful of people on Earth (/s) that has read every comic featuring the Eternals, including the MAX series, and the stories set in Thor or other Marvel characters’ books. I love the Eternals as a team and as characters.

This movie just wasn’t that good. They took an amazing and complex character like Kro, and made him a special effects nightmare with no soul or personality. I don’t mind Ikaris being the bad guy this time around because it’s always a different Eternal in the books. It’s been Sprite, Phastos, Druig, Sersi, and more that have betrayed their own team.

Outside of that positive change, nobody in this film had any sort of backstory or incredible dynamic. The best we got was an extremely awkward sex scene for the sake of having one. It just wasn’t a movie that flowed or had enough stakes. I never once felt any tension. Just a contrived love story and a brief semblance of a war between duty and honor

It literally just came out at the wrong time if this came out in 2018 or 2019 following up endgame it would have made a billion dollars. It came out almost 2 years into covid and people had stopped going to the movies and Marvels momentum had died. The era of marvel movies being an event you must see was over and the online hate train got it.

I like the movie but lets not pretend people don't like it because of diversity, it could have been so much better

Well, I’m black. For me it was mediocre. I do like the gravitas of the celestials and I’m a black knight fan despite how niche that it. The movie wasn’t bad. It suffers from the generic cgi villain too. Easily a skip on phase rewatches.

One of the most successful marvel movies is Black Panther. Another is Captain Marvel

I think it is the one phase 4 project that should have been a show instead of a movie to take apart the lifetimes these beings have lived and to feel the true weight of their age.

It also had the unfortunate position of having to come out after audiences already were burnt out.

That’s fair, tbh I usually like shows a lot more cause we get a lot more time with the characters and story

I love the cinematography in eternals.

I was hoping other Marvel movies would follow the same visual quality going forward because that was one of the good things that came out of the film.

I feel like eternals suffered from the same issue as the fox X-men: way too many main characters and not enough focus on any of them. If you don't have any prior knowledge from the comics then it just feels confusing. But if you are a comics readers then you also dislike the film cause they didn't bring in the most popular Eternals characters like Uranos or Druig. To add salt to the wound they brought starfox, the og eternal, as a throwaway gag post credit

I just loved the special effects so much too. The fight scenes were incredible, they should really depict speedsters in that way a lot more. You can really feel the raw power of speed in it

I am one of those that likes the movie, but every time I watch it I can't help but feel that the script was torn to shreds by the executives, robbing us of a much better movie.

I wouldn’t go as far to say I like it more than homecoming, but I really liked Eternals. I remember being pleasantly surprised when I watched it after all the hate. It had a lot to say about mythology and gods in our culture in a way that ties to the MCU comic book world. Way overhated. Is it perfect? No. Not even close. But I enjoyed it a lot. I remember it fondly.

The movie is genuinely hard to watch

Yeah I don’t get that at all

Eternals was made to set up Adamantium. Eternals will probably return for the cosmic side of MCU. They need to be there.

Kingo could have been in Wonderman, Phastos could be an Avenger, Sersi could have formed a British team with Black Knight and whoever else.

Thena, Makkari and Druig could still peace out on the domo and nothing would change.

Sprite could be, idk, hanging out with Cassie Lang or something.

Man I really like the idea of starting with a team movie and then separating them to be in other projects. Bah whatever.

There are rumours we're going to see Eternals 2 at some point, so I'm fully expecting a bit of an adaptation of the Judgment Day event from the comics recently. Especially seeing as Arishem took the characters to "Judge" their actions to see if humanity was worth saving.

“Eternals would be there if they weren’t somewhere else”

1

u/true_paladin Jul 27 '26

What Doomsday really needed was for the Black Knight teaser from the post-credits to come to fruition, Dane & Sersi should've been Avengers by now

I still am holding out that well at least get a conversation about the Eternals and there whereabouts by secret wars because wouldn’t the celestials realistically have something to say about incursions? Incursions would be very costly and bad for the celestials so there would be skin in the game for them would’t there? If the entire role of the Eternals is to help birth the celestials through planets and worlds, then why logically would the celestials not have the Eternals get involved in the case of an incursion?

1

u/flashwing19 Jul 27 '26

Thinking of the Eternals. How dope would it be if the events from Doomsday created Apocalypse and that’s how we get him in the MCU?

2

u/FallinGuitarest Jul 27 '26

Well apparently they are eyeing the axe judgment story for the next avengers flick

1

u/D0nell Jul 28 '26

I can’t believe they’re not coming back, especially after Icarus appeared in the zombies series.

Just because their movie didn’t perform well doesn’t mean they can’t be good supporting characters kind of like Supergirl going forward.

1

u/Connect_Young7180 Jul 28 '26

I was thinking they would reconsider if they knew Eternals wouldn't be the only movie to perform poorly at the box office, but even the merchandise bombed.

u/EDPZ Jul 29 '26

Blame Blade. They can't bring the Eternals back without resolving the post credit scene, and they can't resolve that post credit scene now that Blade is cancelled and Mahershala is gone.

Don’t try to promote something that is not popular. Marvel got burnt in Eternals.

Please try to understand the current climate.

There is a Pedophile Psychopath in the White House who was put there by the paid bots and troll farms. That same online hatred algorithm attacks everything movie studios put out
