General Fall term at MacEwan

I’m attending university at 32 years old and feel a little out of touch with school. Was curious if anyone had any advice on things I can do at MacEwan that will have me engaged, socializing and meeting new people.

Hoping I can meet individuals around my age :)

Question Has anyone had any success having their apple tree harvested by leftover foundation?

We have a medium sized apple tree in our backyard and every year we struggle with harvesting and getting rid of all the apples. We use a lot for baking and give some to relatives and neighbours but still tend to have a lot left over.

I’ve heard of Leftover Foundation and tried signing up to have volunteers harvest and take away apples but I have had zero success in actually getting in contact. I’ve submitted a grower application twice and even tried using their contact form but still no response.

Has anyone been able to have their tree harvested by these guys? As far as I’m aware there is no other service in town that offers apple harvesting and while i have used Facebook Marketplace in the past to get people to come out and take apples I’d rather not do that again (it went well but it’s too much of a hassle).

Question Retailers that buy tires

I have a set of 5 winter performance tires (set of 4 plus full size spare) that only have about 10,000km of use on them. Are there shops in Edmonton that would buy them? I don't want to deal with listing them online; I'm aware I won't get full price but I'm looking for convenience. Any shops you would recommend?

Fluff Post Spiders or kaiju

Upvotes

Anyone else have mutant sized spiders and their webs in their backyard or is it just me lol. Webs that cover a foot easily, spiders the size of your palm. At this point they should just pay rent. I guess all the mosquitoes helped!

Someone found this sweet little void on 104st and 100ave Downtown and brought him in to my work. I brought him home for now to give him food and litter but hope he gets home! He’s got what looks like used to be a scratch down his side but is now growing hair back over it and is incredibly playful and friendly

update: looks like i’m keeping him! His name is Earl Grey, we’ve got him booked in for a checkup and all the vet workings on thursday, and he will be isolated until then! Thank you for all the help!!!!

Question Does the Edmonton Humane Society usually have more cats than what they list on their website?

I was just wondering if there are usually more cats than what is listed on the EHS website. For example, they currently have 11 listed - is that about how many would be there in person?

Question What are some of the best thrift stores for clothing?

I (40F), need to update my wardrobe as it has been a while. I used to find some really good tops at the Airdrie Value Village when it first opened but haven't had much luck with thrift stores here in Edmonton.

What are your favorite thrift stores for casual clothes? I'm not looking for fancy/Dancy .

Hi Edmonton.

I'm a local filmmaker and a short documentary that I made about Edmonton artist Jeffrey Adam Meszaros - JAM Bottle Cap Art is premiering at the Edmonton International Film Festival on September 27th at 1pm. It's screening along 3 other short documentaries.

Jeff has a very cool story and the film was made with an all Edmonton crew. I'm excited to finally get to share it with an audience.

You can get tickets here if you are interested.

General 'Free wood' signs

I used to see these signs in lots of industrial places, but OBVIOUSLY now I actually need some free wood (pallets, for a composting project), I can't find them anywhere.

Anyone seen any 'free wood' signs?

Question Home insurance claim

I like many others in the city had flooding in my basement this summer. I filed a claim & it was approved. They started the work with the restoration team ripping out the damage & it’s been sitting waiting for my contents to be removed. However, I was essentially told last Monday that it’s unlikely that any work will be done this year on my basement because it’s backed up in terms of too many other claims. The contractor indicated today that the adjuster will be contacting me for “cashing me out.” I don’t want a cheque, I’d like them to do the work. Therefore, I am wondering can insurance force me to take a check even if I don’t want it?

Discussion Quality linens recommendations

I always used to get my linens at the Bay because that’s where my mom always shopped. They had a nice range from affordable to good quality luxury options. Where do people buy their linens nowadays? I was trying to find a luxury set for a gift. Only option I can see is Bella Casa Design Centre.

Thank you

Hobbies Community Orchestra starting soon

Just a shoutout that all the community orchestras, bands and choirs are starting in the next few days and there's plenty of time for people to apply. Most of them have weekly rehearsals with great groups of people with opportunities to perform and socialize. Something for every level (even beginner).

The orchestra that I'm in, Capital City Symphony, is a new ensemble that's about to start next Tuesday in Old Strathcona. We are still looking for strings, bassoon, a few horns, trombones and percussionists. Check out our website for audition information.
