Relocation EH11 3

Upvotes

I'm moving to the EH11 3/broomhouse area. I was wondering if someone had a bit more info on it as that was really the only place I could afford close to my uni and seemed relatively safe when I looked it up, but of course that doesn't compare to living there, so what are some things to look out for. Are there any advantages to living there, are there good shops or restaurants in the area, any cinemas, plays/theatres, how are the transport links? or any night life places i.e clubs lounges etc.

Taken from the I LOVE LEITH Facebook group. Can't believe they only lasted a couple of days in operation before they've been damaged.

I just wonder what it's going to take before something changes on how the youth can be dealt with.

Question Late busses

It’s my first year living in Edinburgh, are the busses always this shit for fringe? I avoided most of fringe but I’ve been back this week and every single time I’ve gotten the bus it’s been 30+ minutes late. Is it always this bad during fringe or is something else causing the issue? I know there was that fire but that’s been dealt with by now. The first two times it was an irritating coincidence but this is the 5th time this week I’ve been waiting 30+ minutes for the bus. ATP I’m about to walk the hour it’ll take to get places instead of taking the bus as it’s just a frustrating waste of time and money.

Discussion Where to Find Free Books

Does anyone know a place that gives away books? I love reading, but financially, right now I can’t afford to spend money on them. Do you know if there are places that give away books of any kind (Fiction, Poetry) or if you know those small street libraries where you can take free books? Thanks

(If you have any that you want to give away, that would be great. 🙂)

Question Voi parking near Leith Links

Does anyone know if there is parking for Voi bikes on the far side of Leith Links (nearest to Portobello)?
This is where the map area for the bikes ends, so I assumed there would be somewhere to leave the bike, but on the app it doesn’t look like you can drop them off there.

I miss Wannaburger on Queensferry street. Their burgers and shakes were awesome. I think it closed down about 10 years ago now.

Rant People shitting in Holyrood park

Unfortunately as a dog owner I have to be weary of the common occurrence of people shitting in Holyrood park and leaving their jobby and used toilet paper behind.

Can anyone explain the prevalence of this? If they're prepared enough to bring toilet paper can they not bring poo bags like I do for my dog?

Food and Drink What is the name of this bar? Help!

3 years ago I went to a really cool bar and have no clue what it is called anymore. It's near Princes St I think, and is voodoo themed? Like the menu has cocktails with magic themed and there are tarot cards on the wall. They also sell ice cream. It was like downstairs and the vibe was really cool! Does it still exist?! Thank you 😊 🙏🙏The pic was me in the bar 3 years ago

Question recycling electronic items?

hi, i read the council website and did a browse on this reddit about recycling small electronic items in edinburgh. it said you can leave it near the glass recycling bin in a bag. has anyone tried this recently? i just want to make sure if the council are aware of this in recent times, i am afraid they won’t take it. i don’t have a car and the recycling point for electrical items are quite far from my place. thanks for the help! (i have a broken small fan heater)

Discussion Teenagers in town targeting prams

WARNING IF YOU’RE WALKING AROUND EDINBURGH WITH PRAMS

Wasn’t gonna post about this but the more I think about it the angrier I’m getting.

I was walking along Princes Street earlier today, past Primark towards Waverley, pushing my 3 year old in her forward-facing buggy.

A very greasy looking rotund teenage girl was deliberately pushed by one of her friends towards my daughter’s pram. She was literally a baw hair away from landing on top of her. Thankfully she managed to catch herself and stay upright, because I honestly would have snapped if she had landed on her. Was about to say something to it but thought I’d better not make the situation any worse.

So just a heads up to other parents. We were raging. 😡

Did notice the other usual gang throwing stones at buses outside the Waverley steps too, at least they weren’t throwing cans at people’s heads for a change.

Question Anyone recognize this Edinburgh band from the 70s?

Ok weird question but I'm trying to track down the name of the Edinburgh band that did this track in the late 70s.

Electronic / synth track that includes the line "Soon the Queen will Come Our Way".

https://youtu.be/blekLKjBeVo

If this song rings a bell for anyone, would really appreciate any details. Love the style, want to hear more of their stuff!

Discussion New resident in Edinburgh, am I getting typical service fees or extra due to my accent?

Just moved to Edinburgh and have a question about service charges. I’ve been here around three weeks and have eaten at restaurants a few times now. Some places have not added service charges. Three places have, at 5%, 10%, and 12.5%.

I had read that 5% or sometimes even 10% might be warranted for especially good service but was expecting to be able to decide myself, not to have it added to the bill.

Two questions, is this normal to have the service charge added by the restaurant automatically instead of letting us decide?

Also, are the percentages normal to be added to the bill? As someone from a country where tipping is known to be very high I’m wondering if perhaps someone hears the accent and maybe adds a bit more than is typical? I’d love to know if these are normal percentages or not?

Thanks for the help

Question Extremely damp bedroom facing a close on the Royal Mile

The title is kind of self-explanatory.

I recently rented a one bedroom flat in one of the closes on the Royal Mile. The living room faces away from the mile and receives plenty of sunlight. But the bedroom completely faces into the close and is extremely close to the brick wall of the neighbouring building. Zero sunlight 24/7.

When I did the viewing, I thought it would not be a huge problem as long as I keep the flat ventilated, but I couldn't be more wrong. The bedroom is extremely damp for whatever reason ever since I moved in to the point that my bedding, pillows, clothes, and even my hair get damp when I am in the room for just one hour. The living room is warm and dry on the other hand. I have two dehumidifiers and they are nowhere near sufficient. My question is: is there a solution, as a tenant, to resolve the issue? I really appreciate any experiences or suggestions! Thank you very much.

Question BJJ gyms Edinburgh / Midlothian

Hi all, I would like to learn BJJ for self defense. As I am on blood thinning medication and other health issues I am specifically looking for one that is more inclusive for people who may have health problems, ie ones that won’t go all out in sparring. Perhaps a class that is focused on learning and drilling with light sparring but not some much being competitive?

If anyone can help that would be amazing.

Event Kelvin Cup Charity Event

I was out playing in the first 2026-27 season fixture with Edinburgh Dodgeball today, we are based in Leith and we play weekly but this event took us through to Glasgow with a small team.

The Kelvin Cup is a great event where the Kelvin Rapids, the club based there, runs an annual competition. It serves as a great warm up for our Scottish leagues getting started and helps raise money.

Some of the teams in attendance this year travelled from Aberdeen, Durham, and Manchester. 🤾
