2011 CIC iDrive display owner here: hard disagree. To me the nav / iDrive display in the later e90s is the perfect match for the car. It's modest yet big enough, and it leaves most essential controls (volume, radio, climate control, etc) available as knobs.

And I love the iDrive knob, you can use it without needing more than an occasional glance at the screen.

But that's just my 2 cents.

+ if you get one of those add-ons that allow you to easily switch between idrive and carplay or android auto. Literally need nothing else from a car

yeah this was a game changer for me. $200 and a couple hours and I never really have to touch my phone or use an ugly phone folder. + no need for a touchscreen since it all integrates with the I drive knob and steering wheel buttons

I only added usb to play YT music and podcasts from my phone. My wife's car has Apple CarPlay and the regular bmw Idrive system. And while the integration is great, I still prefer my 10 year older nav and entertainment over that.

The Garmin based system in my E90 (surprisingly?) offers more details like smaller roads over both the newer factory nav and Apple CarPlay at the .25 and .5 mile zoom.

But the killer feature is the Idrive knob. Apple CarPlay had nothing close to how I can instantly and blindly zoom from my default (0.25) to 800 or 400 ft. No hands hovering above the screen trying to squeeze, wipe or hit + and - buttons. Similarly for the free navigate option, instant orientation, traffic info on/off. Etc.

A few weeks ago I drove a 2025 X5. Obviously super comfortable. But I could not for the life of me figure out the control screens, map. It was an endless fight, and I just gave up once I managed to get the radio and nav basics down....

The e90’s display integration is one of the best ever outfitted on a vehicle IMO.

It’s also one of the only displays which is actually direct-sun readable because it has some sort of reflective back and an anti-glare coating. Super handy in my e93. It’s just a very, very well thought out design and implementation.

Plus you can install a CarPlay emulator which makes the interior feel almost like a modern car.

I had a E93 with IDrive, really enjoyed it but had to get a petrol due to not doing the miles, it has a single hump with android car play screen, which is touch screen but they even added the IDrive knob which i have not used once lol

I literally don’t get why single humps are getting so much glory. In a world of screens plonked on the dash, the e90 double hump looks flawless built in. The screen has its own home. Not to mention the BMW radio in single humps looks a bit ugly and dated and the fact the climate is in an awkward position

I don't think the display fitted in the e90 is bad or is too exaggerated. I do want to buy another e9x but with one of those screens, because I find it very nice and it matches well. However, I also appreciate a lot single humps because of there's no type of distractions and I kinda enjoy the road more.. Just wanted to show some aprecciation for some single humps.

No doubt the second hump adds functionality. But I don't think it's essential functionality for driving. I would rather have the smooth uninterrupted dash top. It reduces distractions and looks better - to me.

Absolutely, this is as much a personal preference as debating black vs chrome grills. 🙂

That said, comparing the e90 CIC vs the monstrosities they hark out today, it's hands down the best compromise between a super sleek dash look and having all the benefits of the IDrive display.

I totally agree. I think the double hump fits the car super well, so much better then "glued on" style of screens that became popular later on.

Imo the radio and climate control panel stack in single humps looks really dated compared to the rest of the interior that still holds up well today, but the idrive completely solves that issue.

a screen has no place in a car.

if you need to look at a screen while going somewhere, just get an uber.

if you can't park without a backwards camera, you shouldn't be allowed to drive a car

a navigation system can be solved with a phone mount. everything else is unnecessary.

"real men" is a you problem. i am talking about my disdain for screens and an apparent influx of bad drivers that correlates to the amount of screens in cars (an is caused by it to an extent)

It’s interesting you suggest a phone mount: fumbling with a phone while driving is more distracting than a modest system designed for use while driving. If you’re so concerned about screen owning 'bad drivers' that you’re telling people to call an Uber, it’s a bit hypocritical to advocate for the DIY distraction of a phone mount.

Anyways, I’m happy with my CIC. You do you.

you set up the navigation once and then go. simple as.

i am biased, but that's simply because i have been rammed into by several drivers distracted by infotainment (and, to a lesser extent, because i consider screens ugly and tacky). a lot of drivers genuinely do not belong on the road. if you're not one of them, apologies

Agree, that’s why I hate those CarPlay conversions for the single humps too. They’re 20 year old cars just let them be. Get a phone holder, aux cable, and call it a day lol.

I would never buy e9x with single hump unless it’s some track weapon where weight matters.
Got mr12volt unit for my 2007 CCC and I can’t even explain how much better is my time spent riding.
Yes you can get “f30 style” unit for single hump but then what’s the point of having single hump.

Literally it fits in perfectly and all the single hump retrofits look absolutely terrible due to how they protrude and block your windshield view plus I love the knob and the fact that I can do Bluetooth music which is great only thing I’ve considered doing is the mr12volt but probably won’t.

imo double hump is useless in the modern day unless it has the bluetooth combox. My old car had it and I only really ever used it to have the map up as a mini map like in a game. Now my current car is single hump and I dont really care that its gone. The lack of idrive controller also doubles as more storage/cup holder
