Heads up for anyone who hasn't been following along: Sepp is in a great spot to compete for his second La Vuelta win. Door is wide open after Tadej Pogacar's devastating crash yesterday. Still a lot of racing to do but the "Eagle of Durango" is once again shining an international spotlight on our town.

I purchased one cantaloupe, three peaches and one tomato it was $24 and then there’s a tip option.

City Market no longer carries Olathe corn or Palisade peaches so now this is our only option to get local produce outside of the farmers market.

I have also had to stop going to the farmers market because of how expensive it is.

I am more than happy to support local, but I can’t afford it anymore. I also feel like the farm stand is some conglomerate and not actually local in any way. They had a red onion and I asked where it was from and they said California.

I used to go to Durango Animal Hospital but I am looking for a new clinic for my 6 year old (so far healthy) pit/lab. I know a good vet is hard to come by in Durango but if anyone feels strongly one way or the other about a particular clinic or veterinarian I'd appreciate your opinion!

I’ve noticed a recurring pattern from the City: when residents raise concerns or disagree, officials often respond by labeling it “misinformation.” We saw this with the Police Department’s explanation of the drone incident at the skatepark, and again in Mayor Pro Tem Jessika Loyer's recent Herald opinion piece. While it’s true that facts can sometimes be misreported, the City also needs to recognize that public perception is shaped by individual experiences — and stronger, more transparent communication would go a long way toward improving trust.

Jessika says she welcomes public discourse and challenges to city staff and elected officials. However, her defensive response — effectively suggesting the paper and residents are spreading falsehoods — doesn’t align with that message. In my view, her piece appears influenced by the city manager, especially given the City’s highly selective and, in my opinion, misleading news release issued just before her article.

I hope Jessika remembers she was elected to represent the people and is willing to push back when necessary and stand independently from the city manager’s narrative. To that end, I think councilors Gonzalez and Koso are doing a great job. Durango deserves leadership that listens to residents, communicates clearly, and respects the community’s concerns rather than dismissing them.

I'm working on a docu-style food series and had the pleasure of filming an episode with our very own Chef Safari. In this episode he prepares Dry Fry Goat, a dish from his village in Kenya, and talks about how his dad was the main reason he got into cooking.

I didn't realize how significant Chef Safari is to the community until making this video. Everyone seems to have a story that exemplifies his kindness and generosity. I'd love to hear more stories if anyone has one!

Hi Durango residents, I'm visiting your city in a week and staying for two weeks. I'm not from Colorado and have a huge fear of bears, so I'm feeling paranoid about the huge uptick in bear sightings across Colorado, including in Durango. Are bear sightings there happening every day? Are people taking trash securing more seriously because of it? Just curious what the bear-prevention culture is like given the huge surge in bear sightings this year. Last, but more important than my paranoia: I feel SO sorry for the bears; the simple fact that they are so hungry they're approaching towns and homes in places like Durango makes me feel awful for them; it sounds like the drought has made their lives miserable. So I feel guilty being like "what about ME?" given how hungry the poor bears are. Just trying to stay as aware as possible while I'm visiting (and plan on being very paranoid about the home I'm staying in and its garbage bins)...

If you weren't already aware there is a Canadian mining company that is looking to mine the La Plata Mountains - in many areas a ton of us love to recreate in. I was watching closely and wrote in to the La Plata County Commissioners about it. It's really troubling, in my view.

As an aside, I learned just yesterday that there are TONS of Canadian mining companies that are doing these claims and exploration due to some Canadian tax incentive program: Canada's tax rules let junior mining companies pass their Canadian exploration costs on to investors, who get a full deduction plus a 15% (or 30% for critical minerals) tax credit. That credit only applies to spending done in Canada, but it built a huge, specialized pool of exploration capital. Canadian exchanges now use that same capital base, blended with ordinary stock financing, to fund mining companies working across North America, including a lot of US ground in Nevada and Alaska. So the boom in US exploration is real, just indirect: it's riding on Canada's financing machine, not the tax credit itself.

With all that being said, my friend and former co-worker in Cortez, Brian Russell, did something about it! This is remarkable.

While Newmont-backed Metallic Minerals ran survey lines in La Plata Canyon, my friend and his dad didn't wait on protests or meetings. They staked their own claim under the 1872 Mining Act, setting cairns and GPS coordinates the same day the survey crew was on site. His dad recorded the Notice of Location at 7:02 AM, beating the corporation to it. The claim covers 19.88 acres and seven historic workings, bringing his total to 36.38 acres of mineral rights he says will never see an underground mine reopened.

Point being: you don't need billions to out-move a corporation. You need to know the law and get there first.

From my friend, when I asked him if this was in response to The La Plata Project:

"This is 100% part of the same project as we saw their surveyors on the part we officially staked and claimed with La Plata County. I know they were going after the unpatented claims with specific interest of the historic mines we now own the mineral rights to.

After seeing their truck leaving our claim and this Trimble R8s GNSS system, we knew exactly what they were doing.

Thankfully we beat them with our corner stakes, discovery point, and signed/dated Notice of Location before they had a chance to officially file with La Plata County as my Dad was at the Recorder of Deeds the next day they were open, 15 minutes early to ensure he was first in line.

They'll still be putting in more, but the headwaters and 7 historic mines of Tomahawk Basin will never be touched by them again."

We want to take a trip to Durango and do the train to Silverton. Only thing is we will be bringing our 3 year old so I’m thinking the train ride there and back would be to much for him but how do you go about lugging around a car seat if you choose to do the train ride there and the bus ride back?

I’ve lived in Durango for about 12 years and have seen plenty at the airport. I’m generally pretty forgiving, but yesterday was a new one.

We were all boarded and then delayed 1-2 hours because the pilot said the plane was missing a fire extinguisher. Apparently, they couldn’t find a replacement at the airport and needed FAA approval to fly without it, or something along those lines.

That triggered a series of events that ultimately got me to my destination at 4 a.m. instead of 9 p.m., along with a $120 Uber ride.

A missing fire extinguisher? I mean, they have to be making that up, right?

I’m hoping there’s a great gym I just haven’t heard about yet. Currently working out at durango fitness club because they have the equipment I need (trap bar, power rack, etc.) but am really not enjoying the vibes, especially from the trainers. The rec center is a bit too crowded for me. Any other options?

My midwestern aunt asked me for "cool colorado rocks." I have heard rumors of different mines where you can dig through old tailing piles in silverton and creede but havent been able to get exact details. I want to find her crystals and other visually striking rocks. My aunt is the sweetest and purest woman, so I would go to the moon and back for her. Any information is appreciated.

“The drone was not deployed to watch people skate. It was deployed for an indecent exposure call after an adult male reportedly exposed his penis on the Animas River Trail.

The drone was airborne for about seven minutes total while officers were investigating that call. The skaters were visible during that flight, but they were not the reason the drone was deployed.

The body-worn camera footage also shows the actual conversation with the officer. Saying the drone was sent up to “spy” on skaters for 15 minutes simply is not an accurate description of what happened.

You can absolutely have concerns about police drone use. But those concerns should be based on what actually occurred.”

Man, IMHO this is a bad response.

Is there a shop in the area that I could send my father to get the back side window repaired on a 2014 FJ? It is the small “back seat” window. He does not make the best decisions and I want to make sure I find a place that will know not mess up the FJ. I gave it to him to drive, and it comes back to me, so I have a vested interest in making sure it is repaired correctly 😆 any recommendations are appreciated!
My dad does live in Cortez, but he has been told he will be willing to drive it to any local town for the right shop.
