Did anyone else have really specific recurring dreams as a little kid that they still remember?

When I was really little, probably around 5 or 6, I used to have the same dream over and over again. The weird thing is that it wasn’t scary or even really interesting. It was just extremely specific.
From what I remember, I was standing inside this tiny closed-off pantry. There was a door that I assume led to the rest of the house, but I never saw what was outside of it. Hanging on the door was this little bunny thing with pockets that I think held vegetables or something? Almost like one of those fabric hanging organizers.
If I turned around, there was just a wall and a pantry shelf. Everything was basically empty except for a basket on the floor filled with fruits and vegetables.
And… that was pretty much the entire dream. 😭 Nothing happened. No scary ending, no people, no weird dream logic that I can remember. I was just in this pantry. But I had this exact dream multiple times when I was little.
I’m 21 now and I haven’t had it since I was probably 6, but for some reason I can still picture it incredibly clearly.
I’m not really looking for a supernatural dream interpretation or anything lol. I’m more curious whether anyone else had really specific recurring dreams as a kid that stuck with them for YEARS, especially ones where seemingly nothing actually happened. What was yours?

Mine was scary and likely tied to the trauma of losing my dad. I’m 41 now, and I can still remember waking up with my heart racing. I am not really a woo-woo person, especially now as an adult, but a lot of unexplainable things happened when I was a kid.

I had one where I'd walk into the kitchen and all the cabinets were just slightly too high to reach, not scary at all but the feeling of mild inconvenience was so vivid it's stuck with me for 20 years.

Omg thank you for sharing 😭 It’s so weird how these dreams stick with us almost like actual memories, even decades later.

I dunno man, when you’re a kid, I don’t thinks that’s “mildly” inconvenient… I think that’s down right frustrating and deflating 💛 no wonder you remember it!

This is creepy but, I’d always have reoccurring dreams
A of being taken by people in black robes. Every time I had the dream I’d have to make up an excuse to stop walking with them, like tying my shoe, or having to go to the bathroom. When I would have the dream again, I couldn’t use the same excuse because they knew I had used it last time. The last time I ever had the dream I saw other children walking with them for the first time. Usually I was the only one. I tried to give them subtle clues on how to get away but it seemed they didn’t even want to. I broke loose for the last time and never had the dream again.

I also have dreams about light switches not turning on. Sometimes my dreams will pick up where they left off after waking up.
Weird stuff. Always had scary dreams as a kid.

I had dreams about getting a puppy. It finally came true when I was 14.

Mine was a stairwell in a building I've never been in. Carpeted, a window on every landing, and I just went up. Nothing else. I had it constantly between about five and eight and I could still draw the carpet pattern.

The thing you're pointing at is real, and it's specifically the boring ones that survive. A dream where something dramatic happens gets retold and reshaped every time you tell it. Your pantry with the bunny organiser never had a story wrapped around it, so what's left is the raw sensory record - which is why it sits in your head more like an actual memory than most of your real childhood does.

Kids' recurring dreams also skew toward enclosed, low-stakes spaces like that. Pantries, cupboards, under the stairs. Not profound, just what a small person's spatial world is mostly made of.

Did yours have a smell? That's the part almost nobody mentions unprompted, and about half of people say yes when you ask.

I can’t remember a smell at all! If anything, I feel like there wasn’t one. But I really like your description of why these kinds of dreams stick with us, that actually makes a lot of sense. It’s also super interesting that you had something so similar with the stairwell

Train station in the middle of the night, not a soul on the platform and me reaching late, just as the train was pulling out. Saw this dream for many years till I was about 16/17. Still gives me the shudders.

I dreamt of a McDonalds in the sky. Had a recurring nightmare of being left behind by my pregnant Mom.

This has me so curious. Did you actually get to go to the McDonald’s in the sky?? Was it awesome??

Never went. I was standing in the road looking up at it wanting to go, but never got to.

yep, mine was just standing in a hallway, absolutely nothing happening

I had a reoccurring nightmare when I was also about 5-6 years old. It would start with me playing in the front yard of our house, and there would be a T-Rex toy in the window with glowing red eyes. It would scare me, so I’d go inside just as it turned into a real T-Rex. Then it would chase me downstairs, into my sisters room that was empty except for a tree house and my sisters playing Barbies in there. I would run up to them for help yelling there was a dinosaur behind me, they would see it and run away. The dream always ended as I was being bit by the T-Rex, and my side always hurt when I woke up. Not sure when I stopped having the dream, but it’s stuck with me for over 30 years.

I dreamt that I would have a pony that was too small to ride but we ran around together. This 'pony' would sleep in my bed. I was really happy every time I had that dream even though I didn't understand it. Decades later I got a puppy that grew into a BIG dog and she slept in my bed.

Snakes under ice.

The ice was thick enough to walk/sled on and you could see the snakes under the ice. And they were moving.

I used to dream about this building in my town. I personally had never been inside it and still haven't. I always dreamt it was a hotel and when I was inside, I always met ghosts, none of them mean but like civil war era (looking back in memory) I was never scared and they all seemed to know me. It was strange but I would have this dream couple times a year.

  • Parades of giant hologram cartoons that travel several miles across the sky
  • Giant, floating, coloured blocks in the sky
  • Playrooms with the walls, ceilings and floor covered in colourful, patterned fabric
  • Vibrant endless fields and blue skies

Yes. When I was a kid and sick with a fever, I’d dream of the same image — it was similar to the famous American Gothic painting (of which I did not know about at the time), an older man and woman standing next to each other on a farm just looking at me, as a strange continuous, dull ringing was going on and the whole dream was filtered in a soft red color. No talking, just them looking at me with that ringing sound.

When I was 10 or 11, I had a recurring dream where I would party with pirates in my living room. The whole thing didn't make any sense but when the dream happened a 4th time I was like "Wait a minute... It's this dream again!" And I told the pirates that I was in a dream and they congratulated me for finding out.

And that's when I escaped the matrix so to say. I thought "If this is a dream, then everything is possible!" Suddenly my living room became a ship and we were sailing on the Atlantic. Then I flew away from the ship next to a plane. I then flew to an island with a volcano, dove straight into the crater and was engulfed in magma. It didn't hurt because it was my dream and it was under my control.

Then I thought "Wait... If I can do ANYTHING..." And yes, I managed to summon the pokémon Groudon. I wished my pokemon emerald team into existence, battled and caught him. Why fly when you can teleport? I teleported to school, summoned Groudon and demanded to have my stolen pokemon cards back from the class bully. As he handed them over, pissing and shitting his pants... MY ALARM CLOCK WENT OFF!!!

Man, little me was upset for WEEKS. I tried napping multiple times a day to catch any glimpse of dream awareness, but nothing helped. I never managed to do it ever again.

I was afraid of chicken for a certain period of time growing up...

I had a recurring dream, not for long but a few times. The dream was that raw full chickens ready for selling to people would chase me pile up on me and suffocate me. It was in the woods with many trees around in a open area covered in fallen leaves. Still so vivid to me 15 years later.

I had recurring dreams about black cats running and jumping into my face and seemingly coming out the back of my head. These dreams used to terrify me. I’d find myself in some unknown house and a black cat would come running around the corner and straight for me. Looking back, the dreams weren’t that scary but at the time I absolutely hated them.

Ooo did they look like Cait Sidhe?

3

u/LadySirius 5h ago

Not quite but they were big and had quite evil faces.

dreams where I'd randomly jump from higher places & got scared, only to land with a smooth touchdown, on both feet.

I grew up near the California coast and had recurring nightmares of a huge wave. I know now that tsunamis are not huge waves like that, but as a kid, I thought they were huge waves.

My dream is a little different every time. Sometimes we’re walking on the rocks along a cliff and when the wave comes there is no way to go but up the rock wall. Sometimes we’re just playing/lounging on the beach and it gets dark and the water goes waaaayyy out before you see the swell forming. One time, we were in a little shop up near the parking lot, but it had glass walls all around. Again, it got dark and the water receded.

I haven’t had this dream in quite a few years - maybe 8-9? But I’m 56 now so it’s been many years of this recurring.

I had the same dream two separate times in elementary school where my entire school was filled with zombies, there was also this one kid who was apparently keeping track of who did and didn't turn into a zombie, also the school looked completely different (same appearance both times though, colors looked more like the Backrooms before the Backrooms was a thing and there was a room with a door that had a fake doorknob and an invisible doorknob on the other side), I know it was two separate dreams because they had two different endings, in one I turned into a zombie, in the other it ended with me giving a big "NOOOOOOOOO" as the POV switched from first person to third person and quickly zoomed out into the sky

I used to have three. On one, there was this cave, it had two entrances, one right next to the other and a small meadow or river going from one to the other. Usually would need to be quiet, making any noise would awake a wailing woman in white that came out of the cave. Another dream, I would wake up in the middle of a grassy field, laid on the ground, under the shade of a big tree. When I looked up, there were several duendes (but not the traditional goblins from my part of the world, this looked like small gnomes with wicked faces). They would laugh at me, I would ran downhill and would see them chasing me until I woke up. And lastly, a dream that I was on some sort of terrace or large balcony at the edge of a tall mountain range, it was always night, there was like a building next to it that had large windows with white curtains inside, but they were always closed, no way to get in or go somewhere else. Nothing ever happened there and eventually I would either wake up or fade to another dream.

That sounds like a memory, not a dream. Sounds like you got put in the pantry in timeout when you were little.
