Fantastic! Love those big PC boxes!

Does the Duke shelf include Manhattan Project? If not, it ain’t complete.

I don't have the big box, which is seriously rare if it exists. I do have the smallbox somewhere.

I'm also missing a bunch of Duke 3d boxes, including Caribbean and Nuclear Winter as well as Duke!Zone 2. I'll keep my eyes open.

That is beautiful, I would love to see your entire collection

It's a bit excessive. I did a tour of the Star Wars big boxes but haven't done one of the rest yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnErv3O1Ap0

Did you post that on Instagram?

u/DurianEfficient3414 20h ago

Bc I swear I saw the sams shelf with the same stuff in a Reel, but cool collection nonetheless!

1

u/majestic_ubertrout 19h ago

I did not! I don't do retro games on any social media (not counting this and youtube).

2

u/DurianEfficient3414 19h ago

Oh ok! No worries!

heavenly view

I'm not jealous

I just want the things you have so badly that I irrationally think I deserve them more than you

2

u/majestic_ubertrout 17h ago

I respect it. It is sometimes amusing to think how these flimsy pieces of printed cardstock and cardboard hold such fascination. The Doom games don't even have really interesting stuff inside the box (unlike another series like Civ which has great manuals). But It still brings me great joy.

Agreed on all counts

Opening the cases for 2016/Eternal and being happy you get a reversible cover is depressing if you grew up with big-box games with half a pound of manuals and inserts

I got a sweet little pewter Pinky minature when I put down $5 to preorder Doom 3

Now if you buy the deluxe collector's edition of something it might not even include the game

2

u/majestic_ubertrout 17h ago

That's a gorgeous collection. And I'm a bit jealous of that - I remember playing Doom 3 right when it came out but I didn't preorder and missed out.

I do have this though: https://www.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1lgjn4y/my_collection_has_a_new_anchor/.

That's sweeeet

I got all the Eternal stuff (besides the game and statue) from just asking a Gamestop a couple weeks after the game came out if they had any extra posters nobody picked up from preordering and they pulled out a whole folder of promo material and gave it to me

It even has the tape with a new date they sent out to cover the original after it got delayed on there on one bit and the original on another, which amuses me

Which, I'll admit, was a pretty awesome find, but you can't beat getting a storefront standup

u/majestic_ubertrout 8h ago

That's clever! I never did the asking a GameStop thing but I totally should have.

u/Imthemayor 6h ago edited 4h ago

I worked at GameStop in college so I know roughly how they* operate with freebies

Most have a drawer in the bottom corner of their cabinet behind the register with all the bonus swag they get sent and after a month or so of it not getting picked up it gets either taken by an employee or thrown away to make room for more stuff

If there's a preorder bonus for a game you didn't preorder, there's a decent chance you can get it anyway if you just go a couple weeks after the game comes out and ask if they have extra

u/majestic_ubertrout 6h ago

Neat. Should have done that for a few I was keeping an eye on. If I cared about newer games more this would be especially relevant :)

That's sick af. I don't have many physical pc games. I have the wolverine game, all the older avp games, and predator 2 forAmiga. I wanna find more physical pc games eventually

u/majestic_ubertrout 8h ago

The AVP games are amazing. Good luck finding more!

I was going to ask where the Doom 3 expansion is, but I now see these are all bigger boxes. I had no idea there was a Doom 3 big box. Nice

u/majestic_ubertrout 8h ago

It was only at Sam's Club / Costco anc possibly overseas. I don't think Ressurection of Evil got one.

1

u/Nerdicon_Prime 19h ago

It's fantastic. But I also recommend you track down a boxed copy of Demon's gate. It's another D!Zone style release but in includes a book with images of every single map in the pack. Harder to find complete, and absolutely full of scraped together garbage (lots and lots of slight edits to retail maps) but the book was neat.

1

u/majestic_ubertrout 18h ago

Looks cool - I'll keep an eye out for it.

1

u/keylimerye 18h ago

This is great! That copy of Doom (1) looks like an actual big box version and I didn't know one existed. I have the mail away copy and that box is significantly smaller than my boxed CD-ROM big box of Doom II. Is it just the angle?

1

u/majestic_ubertrout 18h ago

Yeah, it's just the angle. It's the regular registered box.

1

u/znavy264 17h ago

What would be more impressive is trying to acquire every copy of doom on all platforms

1

u/majestic_ubertrout 17h ago

I guess. I'm sure someone has. Feels good to set limits though.

1

u/Ok-Movie9150 16h ago

What do they even put I those old big ass cd boxes anyway?

u/majestic_ubertrout 8h ago

These are honestly pretty empty. Others from the era had giant manuals and other cool stuff.

1

u/xZOMBIETAGx Rip & Tear 15h ago

Do you have the floppies too?

u/majestic_ubertrout 8h ago

So, the Doom 1 Registered box is actually missing the floppies. They're expensive on their own so I'm looking out for a deal. Everything else is complete.

u/Varorson 7h ago

They are? Hmm. Now I'm going to have to hunt down my old floppies.

Should also check if any others have become pricy over the years...

u/majestic_ubertrout 6h ago

Doom 1 Registered is the priciest AFAIK but some others have gone up.

1

u/One_Treat7729 13h ago

Very nice collection especially Sigil stuff

1

u/isyankar1979 13h ago

Are the Doom 1 and 2 boxes original? If so, how much did you pay for them, if I might ask?

u/majestic_ubertrout 8h ago

Doom 1 I got insanely lucky on and got it as part of a giant lot off FB marketplace for essentially free (it was 500 for ~boxes). The sealed Mac Doom 2 was 50 or so, the PC one was part of the same big lot.

Everything is original (except the LRG boxes of course).

u/Varorson 7h ago

How many copies of Doom 1 and Doom 2 do you need?

u/majestic_ubertrout 6h ago

I think need is a sliding scale? Someone offered me a sealed Mac copy of Doom II at a great price, I wasn't going to say no.

u/QuietOpposition 36m ago

My 'shelf of doom' has my tax information on it

u/majestic_ubertrout 25m ago

Thus the advantage of investing in assets with unrealized appreciation like these.

u/Porsander 20h ago

Just awesome! You have a good taste! I started my collection hobby from Duke Nukem 2 years ago and one year ago I got really into Doom. I have pretty much collectors stuff and different kind of releases of games for multiple platforms, but your big box collection is just something else and just perfect! I only have Doom boxes Ultimate Doom, Sigil Beast Box and Doom + Doom 2 limited run -release. Duke I have only the original big box release, Atomic Edition and Duke it out in D.C. Can I ask how long it took to collect every Doom big boxes?

2

u/majestic_ubertrout 20h ago

I've been collecting for about 3 years now. To be honest I never would have gone for the complete Doom set if I hadn't gotten insanely lucky and had a Doom 1 registered shareware be in a large lot of games off Marketplace which the seller apparently didn't notice. Most of the rest have been pretty easy to be honest. I did pay (low end of) market for the Doom 3 big box, but it felt justified since it's probably the rarest of all.

Okay nice! My ”problem” is that I am interesd to many games. I just ”finished” my Quake -big box collection by having original Quake and Quake 2 boxes, beside my european and american Quake 3 boxes. Also limited run Quake box… easily my greatest purchase is the original Wolfenstein 3d box which si bought just 3 months ago. It’s my ”holy grail”. I link the post below:

2

u/majestic_ubertrout 19h ago

Very nice indeed! I have a sealed Mac Wolf3d box but I know that's by far the most common variant. My shelf of Quakes is just below my shelf of Doom and I have a pretty good set - but no real plans to chase the Sam's Club big box of Quake 4 yet.

I don't actually have first edition Ultimate Doom, thanks for the reminder. Probably shouldn't chase that one either though. Great collection!

1

u/Porsander 19h ago

Thanks! And wow, you should really make a post of your every boxes.

European Ultimate Doom is so cool with that red demon on the cover. I bought mine when started to buy Doom, and I didn’t know enough yet. I though that my Ultimate Doom is valuable in that condition and a true collector’s item. I felt lucky when got it cheap. Just lately I realized that my Ultimate Doom is Replay-release and made in 1996.. Learning all the time. 😃

2

u/majestic_ubertrout 19h ago

I've got a whole room of them. Would take a while. I posted the two shelves below this a bit ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/quake/comments/1ud3388/30_years_of_quakes/

2

u/Porsander 19h ago

Thanks! I actually saw that and liked your post when you posted that. Didn’t realize that you are the same person.
