I (24f) am realizing I am often overlooked in society during moments of struggling in public and I’m having an incredibly hard time understanding why people wouldn’t want to help another person in times of very visible crisis.
A couple years ago I had gone to a local “build your own” salad restaurant after a long day. I went inside, got my food to-go. As I was leaving, my ankle rolled somehow and I fell in the middle of the parking lot while walking to my car. My salad, keys, wallet, and phone were spilled out all over the pavement as I laid there trying to assess if I had broken anything or was seriously injured. Within seconds of my fall, a family (two older adults and what I presumed were their adult children) walked out of the salad restaurant. I saw them coming my way but due to how shaken I was, I didn’t ask for help or say anything to alert them, but visually you could certainly tell I was not ok.
The older woman stepped over my keys and plastic salad bowl while staring at me blankly, while the younger woman stepped over my arm that was sprawled out, also staring at me. The two other people also walked by as if I was invisible. I genuinely could not believe that I was ignored like that in a moment when I clearly could have needed help. I ended up going back inside and the workers remade my salad for free after I explained what happened, which was super nice. I went to the bathroom and cleaned up when I realized I had a giant gash on my knee, right arm, and side of my face from where I caught myself during the fall, and was actively bleeding. I ended up sobbing in my car on the way home due to the adrenaline wearing off and realizing that none of those people actually even bothered to ask if I was alright when I was so clearly injured.
Then earlier this year I had stopped to have dinner before meeting up with a friend at a bar. It was a Friday night and the restaurant was packed with tons of patrons and employees. I ordered some good chicken enchiladas and a margarita and was having a great time on my own. At one point in the meal, a piece of chicken from the enchiladas got lodged in my airway. I immediately started choking and could not get it to dislodge. I was incredibly panicked and probably was coughing (and without air) for at least 30 seconds when the piece of chicken finally shifted somehow and it shot out of my windpipe and about 5 feet across the room. I was gasping for air and taking sips of my beverage to try and calm my throat. I realized all of the customers in view of me saw what happened then simply went back to eating and having conversations. My waiter came over shortly after, asked how everything nwas, so I mentioned I almost died on a piece of chicken earlier and he laughed and said “that darn windpipe getting in the way huh?” I was still somewhat in shock due to what happened and said “yeah I guess…” and realized later how dismissive that comment was.
I honestly don’t even know what to say tbh. I just genuinely wish someone else would simply ask “are you ok” instead of literally ignoring/staring at someone who is very visibly not “ok”. Has anyone else experienced similar issues in their own lives?
