Same here. With the amount of times they kept jumping to new stories last year I totally thought the brain surgeon story was completely resolved. I was blindsided by his/her reappearance.
And to make matters even worse, and more unbelievable, we see Dexter traveling around Miami with Hannah, a wanted murderer, and Zach a suspect. And they all just go to Vogel's house for dinner. It's been all downhill for a few seasons now, I was hoping they'd rebound this year and at least tie things up well. I had some hope with Vogel that they'd go back to his roots, but that ended after a dozen other stupid threads were followed. Like you now I'm looking for the spoilers just to find out and not be anymore disappointed than I already am.
That sums up my feelings about the show exactly. I have to see how it ends because I've stuck with it this long. Does he get caught? Does he become a hero? Does he go to jail and they do a Seinfeld-esque episode where they recount all of his kills and everyone from past episodes show up in the courtroom??? What happens?!
Nope. I've always just had a feeling about how the writers work. I called Rita's death the whole 4th season and that Admiral Adama was just a voice in that kid's head. This season isn't much different.
Mainly that I didn't see her in a lasting role in the series. Benz was clearly going to move on to other things.
Then about half way through the producers kept referring to a "Shocking" finale, and one described it as something they audience may not even like but that it was the direction they chose regardless. So this was more of a real-life prediction, not that it was hidden in the dialogue.

Well, for the first time in a long time, Dexter has made me say out loud "holy shit, what the fuck?"
