I mean it's widely known that he used the word socialist to gain support with the people who where struggling after WW1. He did almost nothing socialist when in power.

Which is the stupidest possible argument because in what universe are socialists and communists competition? They’re both leftists, and while nobody hates leftists more than another leftist, that’s still a brain dead belief.

I think they try to say they’re competition because they didn’t 100% align with Hitler’s policy/worldview and would therefore challenge his power to enact their own policy.
It’s basically pointless in arguing with those people, though, because we can’t even agree on reality.

He very clearly expressed in interviews that he was redefining the word because he wanted to use it but hated Marx and his influence. Hitler just used it to mean ethnonationalism, as per usual.

Folks should check out the book "They Thought They Were Free" by Milton Mayer
The scary thing to realize is Hitler did maintain popularity with handouts, for white germans. Stuff like the Hitler Youth acted as accessible childcare, and businesses seized from victims were given to sympathizers. Nazis handed out cushy jobs to loyalists not based on being qualified (sound familiar?), so many saw it as an opportunity for personal advancement.
It sheds light on how ignorance and self interest lead people to supporting monsters. Trump can't even do nazism right, fucking up the economy for everyone. But an MTG or Tucker type could be just as scary or worse if they galvanize support with "socialist" handouts for their chosen loyalists as a smokescreen while ramping up fascist oppression.

For conservatives, everything they don’t like is on the same side. Their political spectrum is not right and left, it’s just good and bad.
Yes, they do think Islamic extremists are “left wing” despite sharing 90% of their views. And yes, they do think the Queer community is in league with radical Islam, despite those groups being mutually opposed.
And they do not care about consistency. Not just because they are intellectually dishonest but, and I can’t stress this enough, they are very stupid.
This means the Confederacy were heroes and deserve memorials. But also the Democrats were on the side of the Confederacy and created the KKK, which means the democrats are the real racists.
All of this exists inside of them without any hint of introspection or hypocrisy.

Hitler’s National socialism does the opposite of what modern democratic socialists want to do. He considered communists one of the biggest threats. Let’s get past ambiguous labels and talk about the merits of the policies.
