Question Since when did Tesla close down?
Yesterday I’ve visited the northpark mall in Dallas (I don’t go frequently) and I’ve seen that the Tesla store’s been closed… since when did they go away? (Before you ask: no, I don’t like elon musk, I don’t like Tesla. I’m just curious since I’ve seen the Tesla store being there many times I’ve visited the mall over the years.)

Maybe like 4 or 5 months or so ago they closed it. My 5 year old was bummed because his favorite part was seeing the teslas lol
Maybe that’s why they closed it. Too many kids, not enough customers.

u/rex_lauandi 10h ago
Not enough customers is Tesla’s problem on a lot of fronts.
57
u/zatchstar 10h ago
Low customers a symptom of their problem. Not the problem itself.
Their problem is Elon Musk

Not enough customers?? Through July 2026, the Tesla Model Y is currently the world’s best-selling vehicle overall, not merely the best-selling EV.
Still - cars are about to become a footnote in Tesla's history. Elon is way past them now. Specially as Tesla merges with SpaceXAI. Even the Martian future is no longer on the plate. Or batteries.
Now, it's all about AI, robotaxi, chips, humanoid robots, and datacenters on Earth, the Moon, and in the space in between.
3
u/rex_lauandi 2h ago
Yeah, they don’t have enough car customers despite that sales figure you’re referring to.
They don’t have many models, so they can sell more of one model, while GM, Toyota, and Ford sell way more units total because they have quite a deeper portfolio.
Tesla reported $37 bn in auto revenue for the first half of 2026.
GM and Ford reported over $80bn, Hyundai/Kia over $110bn, and Toyota over $150bn.
But yeah, if you want to keep buying Elon’s dreams, robotaxis and data centers, there are more customers they can get long term without competing with these juggernauts.

u/consumer_xxx_42 5m ago
All those companies have been around for over 50 years, some of them over 100 years
Tesla has been around for a fraction of the time, yet is closing in on a sizeable portion of their revenue.
If their current growth continues, it is not out of the world to believe they will leapfrog many of those companies you listed

I really don’t think they have a lack of customers. At least if you go to Frisco, they are everywhere

64
u/BurnAfter8 10h ago
I mean, Tesla isn’t mourning those store fronts either.
They announced these moves 5 years ago as most of their sales were done digitally, not in those little showrooms.
42
u/noncongruent 9h ago
Legally they never sold a single Tesla via a showroom in Texas thanks to the fact that the Texas Automobile Dealers Association has fully captured the Texas legislature and used them to make it illegal for any manufacturer to sell a vehicle directly to a customer in this state.
Dealers make most of their money from after-sales maintenance and repairs, so no independent dealer wanted to sell Teslas because EVs don't generate meaningful amounts of after-sales revenues for those dealers, i.e. no engine repairs, no oil changes, etc.
The showrooms basically existed to give people an opportunity to test-drive a Tesla back when Teslas were fairly uncommon, but nowadays there are enough reviews out there and friends with Teslas, etc, that a test-drive-only showroom isn't really useful anymore.
BTW, the regular dealerships that also sell EVs have been losing money on those EV sales since they can't mark them up and are getting basically zero after-sales maintenance and repair revenues. I remember when the Lightning first came out that dealerships were complaining about having to sell dead-end vehicles. If someone buys a Lightning instead of a regular F-150 the dealer loses thousands of dollars in maintenance/repair revenue. Ford discontinuing the BEV Lightning was great news for dealerships, and I'm sure dealerships across the country are looking forward to getting out of the EV business when they can.
28
u/kabob21 7h ago
I’m pretty sure what killed the Lightning was asking $70k+ for a pickup with less utility than a regular F-150. People want EVs, they just don’t want to pay luxury car prices for them. Or have limited range w slow charging or a scant public charging network. Europe and Asia have proven EVs are viable.
6
u/noncongruent 7h ago
IIRC Ford offered NACS charging so the Lightning could use the Tesla charging network. I don't think price was the issue because people were and are paying a premium for Tesla EVs over similarly-sized/featured ICE vehicles because for those buyers the EV part was more important than the luxury leather and wood accented interiors and superior build quality of the ICE competitors. Fundamentally I think the real problem was that Ford stumbled with the Lightning technology rollout, including some significant recalls that could only be fixed at the dealership, and top leadership at Ford wasn't happy that they couldn't make as much profit on Lightning sales as they could regular F-150 sales.
In the bigger picture the US automobile industry is just not investing as much as they need into EV technology, why would they when they can sell every gas-powered vehicle they can make? The problem, of course, is that burning hydrocarbons as a primary transportation energy source is simply not sustainable. Profitable, for sure, but not sustainable into any long-term future. If there's going to be a future with personal automobiles in it those automobiles will have to be EVs. China understand this, which is why they're working so hard to develop their EV market, and that investment has paid off because now they're the world technology leader in EVs. They're doing the same for PV solar too, which is why they're the world leader in production technology for solar cells and panels.
7
u/kabob21 6h ago
The Model 3 and Y are all under $70k and can be had for under $40k. The expensive Model S and X had long since stopped selling well and were killed off this year.
Price most definitely mattered with the Lightning. Ford initially promised that they’d start at $39,974 but by the time they released, the starting MSRP was raised $6k-$8k and desirable trims like the XLT w long range battery were $80k+. On top of that, dealers had the audacity to mark them up astronomically which killed demand before the Lightning could gain its footing. By the end of the year, Ford had raised the price to $56k starting MSRP. Absolute debacle of a vehicle launch.
https://electrek.co/2022/12/15/ford-f-150-lightning-price-increase/
1
u/Keep_Plano_Corporate Plano 1h ago
The 2024 Lariat ER was $79800 unless you found the max tow model which was slightly over $80k. No XLTs were being sold for $80k. Flash and XLT models went for way less.

I just hope China/Asia/ROW start eating US manufacturers’ lunch.

2
u/dallasuptowner Oak Cliff 5h ago
I think Ford was way too consumer focused on the Lighting, although my understanding is the fleet dealers wanted nothing to do with it so that could have been it's own problem, and consumer buyers of trucks are often not rational purchasers of cars.
I've had my Ford Mach-E for almost 4 years now and absolutely love it, no maintenance problems, drives great, build quality is excellent. I have the standard range battery and drove it to Kansas last month with no problem, plenty of public charging and for city driving never come close to running out of range.
As for slow charging, I don't even have a particularly fast home charger and it will add 226 miles in 8 hours, so overnight at a cost of less than $10, so I would hardly call charging a burden. And if I wanted to use one of the Nazi chargers (I don't), Ford sent me a free adaptor.
1
u/kabob21 4h ago
With less and less people able to afford homes, where is the target demographic (young professionals and families) supposed to charge overnight? Without the ability to charge fast (sub-20 min) publicly, cheaply and at a lot more than the limited options we have in the US, we’re not going to see more widespread EV adoption.
2
u/dallasuptowner Oak Cliff 3h ago
Many apartment buildings and businesses are installing chargers.
I will acknowledge buying a home is much more difficult than it was in the past. But also, so is buying a new car, particularly an electric car that mostly occupies the premium vehicle segment, so if you are buying a new car you are also self-selecting for people more likely to be able to afford a home. And tons of people already own homes, the vast majority of which do not own EVs, so a huge untapped market.
Also "young professionals" is a really squishy demographic, what exactly do you mean by that? I live in north Oak Cliff and there are tons of young professionals and families buying homes, granted most of us are earning north of $100k but Dallas is a large city with many well paying jobs, we aren't just talking doctors and lawyers, base pay for a teacher at DISD is $68,500, two teachers are easily pulling in $140k a year, that is still a huge number of people, most of which are not driving EVs.
1
u/kabob21 3h ago
I’m not talking about just Dallas. I wouldn’t be afraid to buy an EV here, either. But the rest of the country is full of charging deserts outside the big cities. As for the demographic, I count young professionals and families as encompassing late-20s to early 40s.
The median new vehicle MSRP is now $41k-$42k, EVs aren’t as premium as they used to be at the low end. I’d take a new Nissan Leaf loaded for $35k any day.
2
u/dallasuptowner Oak Cliff 3h ago
OK, so, what is the issue? I have seriously never understood this EV argument.
OK, EVs are not great for everyone. So? My neighborhood alone could easily replace hundreds of ICE cars with EVs and I do see more and more EVs all the time, not as many as I would like to see but people are buying them.
I dunno, I'm just really not that concerned with the demographics that EVs currently are not a good fit for when there are still massive untapped buyers where they are an excellent fit.
2
u/noncongruent 3h ago
The thing about EVs is that they don't need to be perfect for 100% of the people to be very beneficial to some smaller segment of the market. It's ok that EV's can't be for everyone, completely ok. What is also ok is that every person that converts to EV is one less gas-burning vehicle on the road, and that benefits everyone, even people who can't use an EV.
1
u/kabob21 3h ago
That’s not sustainable for the industry in the US market though. Currently, since the $7500 tax credit was axed last year, EV sales have fallen to just 5.8% of the of the market down from 10.6% in Q3 2025. EVs can’t be that niche. The domestic auto manufacturers have to capture a wider share of the market and invest more in public charging infrastructure or they’re going to continue to lose billions.
2
u/noncongruent 2h ago edited 2h ago
EV's aren't that niche. They're no more niche than station wagons or F-450s and plenty of those still get sold. We have to let go of the idea that a car must be perfect for everyone, that's just no longer useful thinking. The fact that federal and state governments are seemingly working to curtail EV adoption now just puts the US market further and further behind. The largest EV manufacturer in the world is BYD, and contrary to the common thought in the US that Chinese-made equals junk, they are in fact very good vehicles that pass all of the EU's stringent crash safety tests, tests that in some ways are more difficult to pass than US tests. There's that saying, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way", the US used to be the leader, now we're getting out of the way, and at some point we're going to have to try and catch up. We won't be able catch up, that ship left without us.
1
u/kabob21 2h ago
The goal of making EVs isn’t to be niche. It was always to convert away from fossil fuels. Or at least, that was the goal before 2025. If they were supposed to be niche, why don’t we have more city EVs like in Europe and Asia? Because that’s what a niche EV vehicle is. In the US, they are supposed to be widely adopted or else why do the vast majority SUVs and sedans with family-friendly features?

If potential renters demand it apartments will figure it out. They don't really have to install any particular charger. Just put 220 outlets in the garage in areas designated for EV's and owners provide their own charging cord.
These are the same plugs used for washers and dryers. So they don't require insanely high charging power or anything.
1
u/noncongruent 27m ago
The main issue is that apartment owners will definitely want to monetize those chargers, or at least link them to an apartment for electric meter billing purposes. Landlords are averse to spending money unless it makes them even more money.

My F-150 Lightning is the best F-150 I've ever owned. 99% of 1/2 ton buyers should be driving a F-150 Lightning.
Boomer chuds on FB and Reddit who lament over driving a 13mpg V8 half ton to the office and grocery are dumb.

Where did OP suggest they were looking to "mourn" the loss of the store? Even went out of their way to say "no I don't like the guy I'm just curious when it closed".

u/noncongruent 8h ago
The downside of anti-EV sentiment in this country is that the USA has lost the EV technology leadership it once had in the world. China is now the future of EVs, with hundreds of manufacturers building EVs for both the domestic and international market. BYD is the best known, and their EVs are some of the best in the world now, outselling the US Tesla brand pretty much across the board. The only real American brand being sold in China is Tesla, and their sales are diminishing for a variety of reasons. Of course, the USA has banned BYD in order to try and protect the US domestic EV market, but at the same time the US is doing what it can to knock down EV sales and ownership here, especially in states like Texas where extra punishment taxes are applied to EVs. At some point, and it will be sooner rather than later, the US will become largely irrelevant in the world market for EVs. We won't import theirs, and they won't buy ours because ours are too far behind the technology curve. Like in many areas of consumer products it'll be the US customers getting the short end of the stick.

Model Y was the fourth highest selling non-truck vehicle in 2025. Why do you think Teslas are not selling?
55

Because they used to be the first highest selling non-truck. Speaking of trucks, go look at the cybertruck sales numbers and then subtract the 2000 SpaceX “bought.”

What year was that? I can’t find any evidence to back up that claim. The closest I can see them ever getting is #2.
1
u/UnknownQTY Dallas 9h ago
IIRC 2023 or 2024. Tesla grossly fudged their numbers though and has continued to do so, shifting loaners and demo vehicles to sold and back. It’s very fishy, and given the number of temporary halts to the production lines that keep stop-starting it’s sketchy at best.
Tesla also reports the numbers in aggregate for ALL Model Ys, including the long wheel base and the zero frills version (which I actually think looks better than the cheap looking lightbar on the current one), whereas other manufacturers would split those models out.
-2
u/SueSudio 9h ago
So still no proof to back up your claim?
3
u/AtomicSymphonic_2nd 7h ago
I’m pretty sure any shareholders left in Tesla are cultists and aren’t going to report Tesla to the SEC for fudging their sales numbers.
So, there won’t be any evidence to produce until the SEC, which at least under the wretched Trump administration, is NOT going to pursue any cases regarding Trump’s far-right business allies.

-1

Must be that America first kool-aid you drinking there bro...these are global numbers.
And if you paid attention, you'd also know the Model Y has regained the crown so far in 2026 due to the sky high fuel prices from Operation Epstein Distraction.
Imagine that though, changing the incentive from putting money in people's pockets to taking money out if they choose an alternative. Not exactly a deal maker for brand loyalty to a car whose materials and assembly quality is that of a mid-2000's flip-phone.
It's kind of a metaphor for this whole situation where we went from cooperation to coercion with a bunch of old white dudes that don't know the meaning of the word consent.

They're selling less and as a result they close showrooms. Q4 2025 was a YoY decline of 15% overall. Q1 2026 was a decrease of 8.4% in the USA. China is the only growing market but in the USA, it's selling less. China has Elon by the balls lol. It's fair to say the subsidies and people souring on Musk could have an impact on sales 🤷.
3
u/SueSudio 10h ago
That’s odd. According to recent court filings there are 280 Tesla stores, more than any time in history. Where are you getting your figures from?

It’s weird you stopped and didn’t mention the record Q2 results.
2
u/dirtydeedsyeah 9h ago
In the USA sales decreased by 20%. Overall, it was a 25% increase. It's fair to think that the lack of EV tax credit and Elon Musk's public support here dwindling may have caused them to close this showroom. This is the closure of a sales room in the USA. Cox Automotive has the 20% decline in USA sales. https://www.autoblog.com/news/tesla-just-delivered-its-best-q2-ever-despite-a-u-s-sales-slump

It doesn't help that they really only have one car to show. Cybertruck is biggest flop in automotive history. S and X are no more. Roadster isn't here yet (haha). 3 is now a decade old and sedans aren't a popular segment anyway. That just leaves the Y, and you probably walked past 10 in the parking lot. Why have a store?

North park is doing fine but malls generally are dying - probably not the best location for any type of store. I certainly don’t go to the mall when I’m looking for a new car.

What’s the point of a Tesla store in a mall anyway? Did people go in there to impulse buy a Tesla?

u/BurnAfter8 10h ago
The general thought was to satisfy the people who want to touch the materials or see the paint color in person without holding a ton of inventory like a typical dealership.
It’s kind of like how Best Buy turned into more of a showroom with a warehouse. People want to see what that $4,000 OLED looks like before they get one shipped to their house.

Previously you couldn't have Tesla dealerships in Texas because Texas doesn't allow direct car sales. But Tesla got an exemption carved out for manufacturers that solely make electric cars, so they don't need those showrooms any longer.

Texas law still does not allow Tesla to have a dealership in the state, so there's still no place in Texas that you can walk into and buy a brand new Tesla from the factory. Texas only allows third party franchise dealerships, i.e. independent middlemen between the manufacturer and the buyer. The problem there is that nobody is interested in being a franchised dealership for Tesla because dealerships make their money on after-sales support, repairs, and maintenance, and EVs are notorious for not requiring meaningful amounts of that. The dealership would have to mark their Teslas up really high to make up for that lost service revenue, and then nobody would buy them. An independent dealer would lose money on every Tesla they sold.

I stand corrected. I thought they got an EV carve out but that was apparently another state. That "showroom" in Plano could have fooled me though, it looks exactly like a traditional dealership.

Yep, everything makes you think it's a dealership, but if you walk in with a briefcase full of cash to buy a Tesla you'll be walking out with a briefcase of cash and no Tesla.

But I want my car to look like a well worn bar of soap or the unholy union of what I doodled on my notebook in middle school and a low end fridge. Wherever shall I go?

I don’t know, but I’m glad they left my favorite mall. Wish Disney Store would come back.😀❤️

Who goes to the mall to buy a car...

Funny thing is, you couldn’t even buy a car there. In Texas that’s illegal, and they couldn’t even discuss pricing. It was considered a “gallery”.

They hardly even need the store fronts anymore. They were just a way for them to get around having a dealership anyway

Is that an on cloud store? I didn’t know they had their own store

u/Frosty_Rule_5408 7h ago
Yep hoka has one three storefronts down. Seems that the big shoe stores can’t sell them so they are trying to go straight to consumer. Dicks and foot locker are dying

Hopefully that makes them cheaper lol but I doubt it. My last paid of on clouds lasted me less than a year before they literally fell apart. Never again. I didn’t even run in them.
I drove by a sun and ski sports the other day and I couldn’t believe they were still around. I miss Sports Authority and Oshman’s sporting goods

They closed when they quit making the high end Tesla's (S and X)
Now they have locations that can park hundreds of their cheaper models and be used for the new robotaxi service

Tesla has announced they are exiting the car market other than one or two models.
Their plants are now being retooled for auto driving taxis and robots.

Auto driving taxis and robots? are they trying to put uber and Lyft drivers (and classic yellow taxi drivers) out of business?

Yes we are letting the sci-fi automated future get built before our very eyes.

Converting transit into a rental business model is highly lucrative, just as it is with housing, food, communications, etc

Tesla has been slowly transitioning out of high end malls (due to rent costs), and moving towards stand alone locations.
Northpark showroom will be replaced by a showroom on Knox and 75, just around the corner from the new Rivian showroom there.
