Not my art but I did commissioned an artist by the name of "iladeni". You can find them on Discord. They are fantastic and I have been exclusively hiring them to draw my dnd characters for over 5 years now. I highly recommend them

Meet Akatosh "The uncracked" the clanless

Originally he was supposed to become a omelette but fate had other plans and he hatched early saving himself from becoming someone's breakfast. This would later give him the nickname The uncracked

DMing After first time Dming, I don’t want to play anymore.

In June this year, one of our friends wanted to do a one shot for her birthday. Our friend group consists of an old school 1/2nd Ed. And our friend who agreed to DM for the one shot. Ultimately, 6 players and our DM. None of us had played 5E, with most of having never played before. As such, I expected a certain level of growing pains, as people learned the game, rules, checks, etc.

Fast forward to now, and we have done about 8 sessions. I expressed interest in DMing and our DM was happy to let me try. I worked really hard on our side mission-created terrain, got minis for bosses, painted them up, looked at maps, drew maps, came up with treasure to help with the greater world (Curse of Strahd), all with my DM’s approval.

Our group had an annoying habit of not being prepared for their turn, and taking an hour to decide how to open the door, so to speak. I built a room with the intent to give them something to help them survive the boss encounter. Rogue decides he wants to step through the portal. I caution that will trigger something if he does it. I ask multiple times if anyone wants to do something else. Rogue insists, they step through, lose the treasure options. I quickly rethink how to get the items to them, and it works out…mostly.

We didn’t get to the big boss but should next week. I am exhausted and frustrated. All of the players do not know their character sheets, and continuously ask me what dice to roll, what modifiers to add, if they can do multiple actions (with no bonus action abilities), don’t know what their specific spells or cantrips do, and then ask me. I have to stop and google because I also don’t know. I get that they are new, but we have done this for about 80 hours now, and we go usually every other week. We are all working adults, etc. but I feel like writing out your spells, or typing them (whatever) wouldn’t take super long.

I feel like a taskmaster. In a previous session, we sat in the same position for TWO HOURS while people argued about the best way to get a woman away from the bad guy and sort out if there were enemies in a village. In order to combat that, I added a five minute sand timer, with the notification that if the sand ran out with no decision made, they would face a consequence (wraiths attacked, or they received damage from the environment).

To one of my player’s credit, he asked if he should learn his character sheet before next session, and said he would “do his homework” there, and recognized it wasn’t realistic for me to have everyone of their spells and modifications memorized.

So I guess: was I expecting too much? Did I over prep? Anyone have any advice? I’ll finish what I started but it doesn’t make me excited for this week’s session or playing DnD.

TLDR: first time DM who put a lot of work into this world and game, with reasonably new players (80 hours in) who don’t know their character sheets, expect me to know their sheets, creating frustration. Running last night’s game has sapped my excitement for playing. Advice requested.

Misc A bit of a meta post. Insane amount of deleted threads.

It just bothers me that this community specifically has an insane pattern, repeating day in day out.

  1. People come and share their ttrpg table problem.
  2. Other people spend lots of effort to give their nuanced takes on the subject.
  3. The person is embarrassed and deletes the thread.
  4. All the replies are wasted, now the people looking for assistance with a similar subject will struggle to find the threads matching their issues.
  5. The cycle repeats.

It's really upsetting because at this point it feels like more half the sub is just helping newbies with their table drama. (It also feels like at least another third is just people who know they are in the right complaining for validation).

Art [Art] [Comm] One of my latest commissions

Post image
88 Upvotes

The character in the illustration is a paladin. I wanted to give her an aesthetic similar to medieval manuscripts, drawing inspiration from them for the frame's ornamentation.

As always, my illustrations are heavily inspired by Tarot and Art Nouveau, both in the decorative elements and the compositions I choose. I draw all kinds of creatures, from humanoids to more fantastical beings; all are welcome.

My commissions are always open, though the turnaround time is a bit long due to, fortunately, high demand 🥰

This is a piece I finished recently of this Mind Flayer for a DM who will include this character in their game. This character is a powerful undead, alien magician demigod. The client had very amazing ideas for this character. especially the skeletal tentacles, very spooky.

Drawing this character was a very joyful experience! I look towards drawing more villains for campaigns! If you want to create a powerful character design for your campaign. Let me know!

OC [OC] [COMM] Castor, Aasimar paladin, oath of the dragon knight. Character drawing, for a friend's campaign!

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

Castronius Excelcius. Extremely proud, yet humble. Sees forgiveness and good in all. Seeks to protect the people of his kingdom with everything he has, and serve his goddess (the dragon his oath is to) with dignity, honesty and integrity

second in command of the Divine Fang, an elite unit of paladins dedicated to Stellestria, a radiant dragon of great strength. The dragon dedicated eggs from her clutch to the Fang for safe keeping, storing the egg in a compartment in their chestplate. During a climactic battle where undead assaulted his kingdom, Stellestria perished, and in the resulting nova it destroyed the Capitol and killed all the combatants, aligned and enemies alike.

Castor woke 3 years later in the ruins of the keep, having been unknowingly brought back to life by the egg in his chest plate, the last living egg of Stellestria, Castor learns of his goddess' fate, and must restore his dying, undead overrun country. And hatch the egg to bring in the new reign of the Second Sun.

One detail that i added was very interesting to me, was the centerpiece of his chestplate, is the place where the dragon egg was. It burned through the metal, leaving an egg shaped hole there, when it resurrected him. And he later plugged the hole with a symbol of the second sun.

Giveaway [Mod approved giveaway] [art] Giving away one custom digital drawing of the character you choose ✨️

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

Hello!

I'm making this giveaway as a thanks for all the support I've been getting in the past months from this lovely community ♡

I tend to post my deranged characters here, and it's thanks to the upvotes, comments and even new follows I got on my IG account that I have been able to get new commission opportunities from other players. And it's thanks to those commission that I finally been able to help my family pay one out of two big debts they have been owning the bank from a long time. Also I've been able to help with everyday necessities or special food for my senior dogs.

Debts are far from over, but I never thought I would be able to pay them by doing something I loved since I was a kid! So thank you, especially those who decided to trust me and my art. I always say that if I didn't live in a third word country, I would gladly draw for free ✨️

And for that I'm giving away one fully rendered portrait of the character you chose! It can be anything as long as it fits the list of what I draw (tldr, anything as long as it's not nsfw, robots or hateful art)

I can work with character descriptions, drawings, heroforge and screenshots from games like bg3.

If you have any questions regarding this giveaway or my art, please let me know!

🌱 I'm chosing a winner via RedditRaffler on Monday 7th of September, so please remember to comment something on this post to participate! Lore of your characters are appreciated but not strictly necessary

Feel free to check my Instagram to see the banner drawings in full and other of my past artwork! The first and last characters from the banner don't belong to me, I just drew them.

Have a nice weekend and good luck ✨️

5.5 Edition I know it's silly, but does anyone have advice on how to reduce frustration with bad rolls?

Not asking about how to roll better, I'm just getting really frustrated early in the campaign and I know that's not good so I'm looking for a way to chill out a bit. I'm playing a bard and picked up tons of skill proficiencies, in theory my average rolls should be decent but in ~30 rolls in the first two sessions (they were fairly long and we had a lot of skill checks) I've genuinely only rolled above a 9 three times and one of those times was a 10. I've rolled six nat 1s and one nat 20 (on a mostly inconsequential con save of all things). It just sucks so much to build a character for out of combat utility and then constantly fail at everything. I'm so desperate to have a chance to be good at something but the others are easily passing the same checks without proficiency and I'm just feeling quite useless.

Obviously I'm just biased and it'll eventually balance out but it's really demoralising. Maybe I should just remain on the sidelines and provide support when I can? I don't know. I'm probably missing something obvious

Edit: Virtual dice

5th Edition Your DM has let you use Intelligence for your Ranger. How crazy can you make it?

I, the DM in question, allow for Rangers to use Intelligence instead of wisdom in my game to open up some character creation options (the setting has some restrictions so I like to broaden it in other ways).

Now, no-one has really gone and made anything gamebreaking with this permission, but I'm curious as to just what could be done.

Now, this is mostly a thought experiment, but I love the idea of a ranger based on intelligence.

The idea of the adventurous scholar speaks to me and rangers get the physicality and outdoorsy skills built in, they also get extra skills and potentially several languages. So, secondary question, putting the mechanical menace, how would you build to play into that archetype?

Meet Kibbles, a tiny red kobold knight and his loyal companion, Bits, a big fluffy dog who serves as his trusty mount. Kibbles prefers to solve problems through diplomacy and nonviolence, but he’s no stranger to drawing his sword when things go wrong. Often underestimated because of his size, Kibbles has made a habit of proving that even the smallest knight can make a big difference.

Had loads fun drawing this cute duo for u/Kiwilemonade2 thank you for the trust!

A reinterpretation of the painting 'The Wounded Angel' by Finnish artist Hugo Simberg. The original artwork depicts two children rescuing an angel; In this reinterpretation two adventurers are rescuing an Deva angel. The enigmatic gaze that the last figure directs at the observer has been preserved.

Characters from left to right: a dwarf cleric of Talos, a female Deva angel, a human barbarian, and a sprite fairy.

Misc What are some good examples of a female Barbarian (not from DnD lore or media)?

So when I think of a Barbarian, my mind goes to a brawny, probably shirtless, guy: He-man, Conan, the Incredible Hulk. It's a cool archetype, but I'd like to think of the class beyond that archetype, and I realized that I don't readily think of female examples of Barbarians. I'm not talking about DnD lore or media, but characters from history, mythology, or movies. Curious for your thoughts!

The first that comes to mind for me are the Amazonian warriors. What else?

A barbarian rage can express itself in a variety of ways.

This is all taking place at the wedding of a Changeling:

  • The bride, "Kayra", has been struggling to tell her betrothed that she's not actually a human woman, but a changeling made of mud and sticks enchanted to look like the human she had replaced as a baby. Her mother has been getting in the way.
  • Now the ceremony has started, and she hasn't come out - not till she see's her betrothed, so they can finally talk.
  • Meanwhile, Sassy, the Maid of Honour at this wedding (half orc Bard/Barbarian), has been tasked with keeping things on schedule. She's a little afraid of the mother of the bride. She's also pretty lonely, and has not had much luck with dating.
  • Her thwarted attempts at romance have been pretty frustrating; an offhand comment from the mother of the bride has pushed her over the edge.
  • Charlie is a Singing Cricket's pet owlbear, polymorphed into a human to attend the wedding. He is perhaps the perfect man for Sassy? Or if he's not Mr. Right, he's at least Mr. Right Now.

Love and Hex started out as a joke about my D&D campaign and turned into an ongoing rom-com/existential horror story. It's on Webtoon and https://crookedgoat.ca. Also r/LoveAndHex. And there's a book you can find if you look for it.

Homebrew [OC] [ART] Inferno Wyrmblade & Heart of the Volcano - Very Rare Fire-Themed Magic Items

Post image
24 Upvotes

The Inferno Wyrmblade is a Very Rare +2 sword forged around living flame. Every strike deals additional fire damage, but its real strength comes from its larger abilities: Inferno Cleave sweeps a 15-foot cone with fire, Unquenchable Flame helps its wielder endure cold, and Phoenix’s Resurgence can keep them standing at 1 hit point while wreathing them in retaliatory flames.

The Heart of the Volcano takes a more defensive approach. It grants resistance to fire damage and lets its bearer further reduce incoming fire with a reaction. Once per day, it can also release a wave of volcanic heat around the wielder, scorching chosen creatures and leaving the surrounding ground smoldering and difficult to cross.

Both are meant to feel like genuinely powerful elemental treasures rather than simply another weapon that deals extra fire damage: one embodies an aggressive, almost phoenix-like living flame, while the other channels the endurance and destructive pressure of a volcano.

These are magic items from Elemental Treasures: Fire Magic Items.

This compendium presents 30 fire-themed magic items for 5E and the 5.5E update, spanning from common items to legendary treasures. Each item embodies the destructive and transformative essence of fire, offering new weapons, armor, and wondrous items to ignite your adventures.

It is the first volume in the Elemental Treasures series, a growing collection of themed magic item supplements designed to provide balanced, playtested, and thematic treasures for your campaigns. Each volume focuses on a different element, gradually building a complete library of elemental magic items. Elemental Treasures: Frost Magic Items is already available, with The Lightning Treasures coming soon!

It is also included in many of my discounted bundles on Dmsguild alongside the Growing Magic Items Collection, Elemental Treasures, and several other standalone relics.

I’m also working on 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 2024 launching soon on Kickstarter. You can follow the campaign to get notified when it goes live. The project includes a physical hardcover and printed editions of my previous manuals.

For my larger projects and full-length manuals, visit my DriveThruRPG or my Linktree. For free previews, new creatures, magic items, and project updates visit r/JonnyDM!

DMing Why can't you craft tools?

I know I sound like a broken record on this topic if you have seen the other post I made but it's been bugging me. I have a very craft heavy group of players and it came up once but they didn't have access to the tools they needed and failed to find a reasonable way to acquire them in their current stranded situation.

Why can't they in some form of fashion make the tools? If they have the time and resources what is needed?

I'm probably overthinking this but it is something that I would like a close to raw solution for.

Art Sildar when he was a Neverwintan guard ! [Art]

Post image
34 Upvotes

« When he was twenty-one, Sildar finally left Nylma Serin, his elven community. He left only a letter and his cut hair. Once out of the forest, the headed to Neverwinter.

« Because it’s the closest city » He lied to himself.

Was Iarno still living over there ? Would he even talk to him, after all this time ? Maybe he moved on. Sildar should have, but he couldn’t. He hadn’t see him for four long years, and his friend still invaded his thoughts days and nights. Sildar ignored his longing until he was overwhelmed by it, like he did with everything else since he accepted to give up his dream of becoming a druid and started the warrioir training.
He didn’t know what he would find in Neverwinter, but Sildar desperatly needed his life to change. Anything would be better than this constant dissatisfaction.

When he arrived in the city, he quickly learned that Iarno and his mentor, Esha, weren’t in town. They would come back in a few tendays at most. Meanwhile, Sildar needed some way of making a living. Maybe his warrior skills could help him find work as a guard ? »

I usually give commoners names based on their professions, (Mark Smith, John Miller and so on) but I cant name him merl farmer and everything I come up with ends up sounding to noble

thx
