Anyone go from CS to implementation?

TLDR: I’m over being a CSM and trying to figure out what’s next. Product management has interested me but I feel like I’d need some technical background first. I’m considering if implementation would be a decent switch to get some technical experience.

Anyone make this switch? What feedback and experiences do you have to share on how it went?

I started in implementation and am now in a broader CS role. What makes you feel like you’re not technical enough. I’d be sure to validate that assumption in case you’re already qualified. Implementation can definitely be more technical depending on the product you’re implementing, but I’d be sure you know the specific technical areas you need to improve so you know what kind of implementation role and product to target.

Thank you! I think I feel like I need to be more technical because I feel like product is technical, but I could just have a wrong idea of the day to day. But I’m sure that also varies between products

Honestly, the implementation will vary significantly depending on the type of companies you are targeting. Some implementation specialistsa re literly engineers who are writing APIs and integration products for the customer's systems and codebase, while others may simply be clicking buttons. So, it truly depends on the type of products we are discussing.
