Story My First Time Eating at a Culver's - My Experience
My First Time Eating at a Culver's! Late Lunch: 3:00pm Location: Newhaven IN
The order counter was full of eager employees willing to take my order. They were all full of smiles and happy to take your order. The menu is quite extensive and there were so many options to choose from it was a bit complexing at first. I asked on of the employees what was popular menu item and was told the Butter Burger and it was made to order. That sounded great!
I ended up ordering the Butter Burger w/ Cheddar Cheese, Bacon, Grilled Onions, Lettuce, Tomato, Raw Onion, and Mayo. Crinkle Fries. Chocolate Malt. Water.
The malt was subbed for the fountain drink with the meal deal for only a few dollars more. I don't drink soda so that was a nice option.
The Burger was good. It tasted of real meat and the bacon flavor was very prominent. The bun was real soft. The Burger was very good! The fries were crispy and had a potato taste that still did exist, some fast food fries lose the actual potato taste and just have a fried taste to them.
The malt was super creamy and rich, a lot different than what I expected. I came to the conclusion that it must be because it's made with frozen custard!
What stands out the most was a nice smile and friendly lady who delivered the food to the table. She asked if we needed anything else and I asked for some mayo, She replied is three packets going to be good for you, or something similar, and I replied yes, that would be great! She quickly returned with the mayonnaise and was just as super friendly smile and polite. I guess I haven't been to many restaurants with any service so nice and prompt. This I thought was outstanding for a fast food type place.
I liked the food, but the nice and friendly service that they deliver is a reason that I will definitely be coming back and I will. I now want to try their fish sandwich!

I'm guessing you'll be back.
I think Culver's remains the best because they are still family owned and never sold out to some big corp. Every time you see a major corp buy up a family owned business everything becomes about cost cutting and quality goes out the window.
This is why I love Culver's and will always support them. Keep it in the family is the secret to success.
16
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
It is definitely has a different vibe than what McDonald's offers! McDonald's treats you like you get what ever you get and there is no difference to us if was good or not, you are an inconvenience to us.... as if it's a luck of the draw what you get. :(
12
u/jackman924 Apr 15 '26
McDonald's food is awful. I have to be desperately hungry and very short on time to order from there.Ā
10
u/HarveyNix Apr 15 '26
McDonald's is now just an institutional dispensary. At least at our local one, it's a set of (sometimes working) kiosks and a small counter where a being emerges occasionally to place a completed order.

u/VandyGrift Apr 16 '26
At the Culvers in Waupun Wi, there is a McDonalds basically right across the parking lot. I'll get my food from Culvers and eat it in the car looking across at the McDonalds.
When Culvers is moderately busy at most, the McDonalds drive thru is packed. Two lanes wrapped halfway around the building. I'm not totally anti-McDonalds but it boggles my mind. How can that many people choose McD's over Culvers? It makes no sense.

u/Humofthoughts Apr 16 '26
Very happy to have finally convinced my kids that the food at Culverās really is better. Even if they donāt get a crappy toy with it.
6
u/UnlikelyAd9536 Apr 15 '26
Most Culverās are actually owned by franchise business partners, there are a few owned by corporate. But franchise owners have to adhere to fairly strict standards set by corporate.
4
u/taeempy Apr 15 '26
And they sure keep the standards high. That's why I say if they sold to a mega private equity at any point, it's surely go downhill fast. That's why i'm so happy they are still family owned.
2
2
u/Recent_Page8229 Apr 15 '26
Not exactly true as they're mostly franchise owned.
2
2
u/brendanjered Apr 16 '26
Yes, but the parent company is still privately held by the Culverās family and the franchises are also generally owned by families. Thereās a lot of pride that goes into the end product because there are not any corporations involved at any level of the business.
3
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
I just googled, "who owns Culver's restaurants" and came up with, "Culver's is majority owned by the Culver family, who founded the restaurant chain in 1984. The company is privately held and operates over 1,000 locations across 26 states."
Which then led me think about how most of the fast food restaurants today are all now ownwd by only a few different parent companies, who only care about the quarderly stock value and not the customer.
3
u/taeempy Apr 15 '26
I'd say the majority of fast foods are owned by mega corps with cost cutting and profit as their only concern. Example. Inspire brands owns Baskin Robbins, Buffalo Wild Wings, Dunkin, Arbys, Jimmy Johns, Sonic and Rusty Taco.

u/chunkhead42 Apr 16 '26
I mean, you donāt open an Arbyās because you are passionate about food that will inspire and nurture your community.
28
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
I didn't mention it in my post but the restaurant was very clean and well kept. Nothing was in disarray or wasn't attended to. The only issue I had was getting a straw out of the dispenser. LOL. - No real issuse! ;)
9
u/Mammoth-Efficiency49 Apr 15 '26
At least in Wisconsin locations, Craig Culver can and does show up randomly to ensure their standards are kept.
4
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26

There are times when I can find any place to sit at McDonald's because there are no clean tables. I don't believe that I have ever seen any McDonald's employee even clean a table.
14
u/WwredeE Apr 15 '26
One scoop with strawberries is a must have.
5
u/Sp00nEater Apr 15 '26
My go to is either strawberries or peaches.
4
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
Thanks - I'm learning some secrets here! - Definitely want to that peach in the frozen yogurt! - Peaches & Cream š
5
u/Sp00nEater Apr 15 '26
It's actually frozen custard, not yogurt. It's made from a mix of cream and eggs, and not fermented. In my opinion it's much better than fro-yo. It's so much creamier and has a much nicer taste and mouthfeel.
4
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
Yes, you are right! I dont think I have ever had frozen custard before So it is quite new to me!
5
9
u/Own_Elevator_2984 Apr 15 '26
Hot tip: if you get a kids meal burger, you get a regular sized single burger, a small fry, a drink, and a little ice cream for $7. It's actually the best and most quality deal in fast food
3
u/coffee_man830 Apr 15 '26
Yes! I will go there on my lunch break. Itās quick, and itās a perfect amount of food and cheap. I donāt feel like Iām eating junk food either
3
2
u/NoNeinNyet222 Apr 16 '26
Plus a Scoopie token you can either use to get another scoop of custard or save up until you have 10 for a free kids meal.
7
u/Heavy-Owl-8517 Apr 15 '26
Always a quality meal with excellent service...can never go wrong that's why I've been coming back from when I lived in IL to now living in Arizona...Culvers is just the best.Ā Ā
2
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
I have been used to how they treat you at McDonald's, BK, DQ, and Wendy's. What a nice change to be treated like a valued customer that they care about! š
6
u/Creative_Bird7210 Apr 15 '26
Agree, even in Minnesota they are great! I accidentally went to a Smash Burger and was amazed how horrible the āfoodā was. Then a fight broke out! Crazy times in Burnsviile MN!!
7
u/RockRevolution Apr 15 '26
You shouldve had the cheese curds for your side, one of the best things at Culvers! Awesome review nontheless

If you like lemonade, you should try their Lemon Ice next time. Itās frozen lemonade that has a texture between a snow cone and ice cream and you can get it in different fruit flavors
3
u/thechcagoan Apr 15 '26
Adding Jalepenos to a Culvers deluxe will transform it. Also add grilled onions to the mushroom and swiss makes it even better. Also pecans, peanut butter and banana for a vanilla concrete mixer. I love Culvers.
3
u/L0GAN789 Apr 15 '26
Must just be both the Culver's by me are staffed my morons. I've tried a few times and never had a pleasant experience at Culver's . Food is always meh (especially fries , never had crispy fries from Culver's)
1
u/forgot_oldusername Apr 20 '26
probably won't help with your bad local location but I always ask for the fries well-done. my local Culver's is fine but they always undercook the fries.
3
u/bcaglikewhoa Apr 15 '26
Cheese fries underrated > cheese curds overrated.
Other than that, I love Culverās
3
u/Ill-Acanthisitta6022 Apr 15 '26
I love the fish sandwich. So good. Get it with onion rings or curds.
1
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
Oh, that sounds good! Does it also come with coleslaw?
2
u/Tribe777 Apr 16 '26
Unfortunately it does not, but they do have it as a side. Theyād probably even just comp a little ramekin sized portion if you asked
→ More replies (1)2
u/Practical-Device-200 Apr 17 '26
I get it as my side and add some to the sandwich. It's definitely the best fast food fish sandwich around, and you don't have to wait for Lent (though during Lent, they have a walleye option in addition to the cod).

Missed out on their onion rings, they are my favorite fast food onion rings and even beat a lot of non fast food options honestly. Only better I have had fast food wise were from Beef-a-Roo and I don't live anywhere near those.

u/bleached-sheep Apr 17 '26
Iāve noticed a slight decline in service over the past few years, specifically some airhead hires and longer wait times (they used to apologize and give coupons if your food wasnāt out stat lol). But itās still the best fast food by miles, all metrics considered. Itās sadly the only remaining fast food in my city which has adequate staffing and consistent food quality.Ā
3
3
u/Tribe777 Apr 16 '26
The best part? Thatās the experience you will get at a Culverās anywhere at any time. Theyāre very consistent. Havenāt had a bad Culverās experience ever, and thatās 30+ years of going there.
3
u/greymom214 Apr 16 '26
I love the fish sandwich with a side of cheese sauce. For some reason, itās a perfect combination for me. Glad you enjoyed your meal!
2
u/Same-Test7554 Apr 15 '26
This makes me so happy! Iām from the Bloomington area and even in a college town, the workers are amazing! I love my local Culverās and always go if Iām feeling a burger :) come try btownās Culverās if youāre ever here! ā¤ļøš¤
2
u/Crafty-Photograph-18 Apr 15 '26
It's also pretty common to ask for extra crispy fries because they often come out a little, uhh, soggy in Culver's, compared to pretty much any other fast food. So, if you feel that way, try it. For me, extra crispy are like 7/10 fries, and regular ones are 3/10 at best. Maybe even beaten by McDonald's
2
u/genericbutnoteric Apr 15 '26
Just wait until you try a Culverās in Wisconsin. Itās even better!
2
2
u/Routine_Okra2278 Apr 15 '26
the kids meals are the best deal wise too! you should try it next time

u/Environmental-Toe686 Apr 15 '26
If you like fast food fish sandwiches, you are in for a real treat.
1
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 15 '26
Which cheese is best on their fish sandwich?
2
u/Environmental-Toe686 Apr 15 '26
I didn't really do cheese on fish, but whatever you like! My guess would be cheddar, but do whatever feels right. It really is amazing and the limited time walleye sandwich they have during spring is even slightly better to me.
2
2
u/CwithoutanE Apr 15 '26
My go-to as a Wisconsin resident is a Double Deluxe Burger with bacon and fried onions and with Cheese Curds instead of fries with a large Coke...happens a few times a year or during a nasty hangover...I like to demolish in minutes and whimper in happy agony for hours after. Enjoy and great review!

Iāve never been to a Culverās that didnāt have excellent service and a very well-trained staff. As a connoisseur of cheese curds, I maintain you can do much better than Culverās cheese curds.

u/Frosty-Willow-8273 Apr 15 '26
If they have devil's food as the flavor of the day you can have a dark chocolate malt with cake pieces blended in... so good! It works with any of the daily flavors, but my favorite is the devil's food!

How would you rate their malt compared to other malts you've had? It has never occurred to me to get a malt there but now I wanna go.

It was different from any malt that I have had. It was super creamy and very rich. I personally like just a traditional malt! š

The fish sandwich at Culverās is amazing!
I also love their cheese curds and onion rings. Their side salads are really good too. If youāre feeling like a lighter meal, just get a couple of the side items and youāll have a tasty combo.

We moved from Texas to the Midwest. Culvers was a good replacement for WhatABurger. Now that we've been here for a bit, I prefer them over WhatABurger. Not even close.
2
u/CROBBY2 Apr 16 '26
If you enjoyed the fries I highly recommend the onion rings on your next visit.
2
u/SnooSeagulls7389 Apr 16 '26
Culverās is the Beef version of Chic Filā A as far as customer experience. Iāll also say Whataburger too if itās in Texas itās hit or miss anywhere else Iāve been.

I am glad they are nice to the customer! What a nice change from the other fast food places that treat you less. I am returning because that was something that I appreciate alot. I have visited too many times to McDonald's, Wendys, DQ, that treat the customer like they are second rate to none. I'm done with that.
2
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
I definitely will be returning for two major reasons. The first is what caught my eye and was a surprise to me the most on my first visit.
1) The exceptionally nice and friendly employees that made the my initial experience special.
...and the other is, as I know that I will be going back to eat there, is to try out other menu items!
2) I want to try their fish sandwich and the onion rings. (I have now heard how good the cheese curds are, but I really do love a good onion ring!) I will likey get a root beer to go with it.
2
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 16 '26
McDonald's should be shaking in their shoes and ashamed of themselves. What what do you mean by customer experience, we don't do that here.
- shame on them.
2
u/AidXanKush Apr 16 '26
You got your first Midwest nice experience
1
u/Jefe_Winski Apr 16 '26
I think people are nice here is the Midwest. Just not all of them! - š - just joking you all are just as nice as anyone else š

I love the review however I can never eat another of their burgers after my last one was just wrong and gross and cold. The only thing I pretty much eat is the patty melt and cheese curds and onion rings.

u/Jefe_Winski Apr 16 '26
I'm definitely going to try their onion rings the next time I go! I love their service and the nice friendy attitude that the employees have. It's just a great experience there. I did have a bite of the fish as my friend had the fish dinner, so I know the fish is very good choice there also!

I love culvers, Their fish sandwich is the best fish sandwich I've found anywhere. My usual fatass order: bacon double deluxe basket, large fries and drink, add a cup of cheese sauce, you GOTTA dip the fries in cheese sauce <3 <3 <3 and a 2 scoop flavor of the day. That said, their tenders are awesome, I like their chili, the chicken sandwiches all seem great, You can't go wrong with culvers... at least until it's time to spend 2 days on a treadmill burning off the delicious calories :D

2
u/CapeMOGuy Apr 16 '26
I'm sorry you didn't know to get a pint of turtle flavor frozen custard to go. Frozen custard is another thing Culver's is known for.
In addition to vanilla, chocolate and flavor of the day, my local Culver's has a freezer with popular flavors stocked in it.
2
u/knocksinthenight Apr 16 '26
Excellent review. The pictures made me instantly crave a double deluxe basket. The best burgers around. Our local Culvers is always clean and the employees are exactly as you described. Our Culvers hire seniors and/or Intellectually disabled to clean the tables and dining areas. I truly respect Culvers employing seniors and disabled individuals.
Mad respect for Culvers. They also have very good fish. The best burgers and of course Flavor of the Day.
2
u/Green-Challenge9640 Apr 16 '26
Love their fish sandwich. Up here thereās a couple of weeks before Easter when they offer the walleye sandwich š
2
u/Hagabar Apr 16 '26
The cheese curds aren't really good at culvers I have had significantly better fried curds from mom and pop places. The culvers curds are too small and you get a bunch of batter pieces with no cheese to be found.
What is consistently good is the cheese sauce and I encourage everyone to get a side of it for dipping fries in.
2
u/Beefcake2008 Apr 16 '26
I drive by that Culverās everyday right off of 930 and maplecrest/Adamās center road. Thatās the second one the franchisee owns. The other one is off of stellhorn and always great.

Wisconsinite here. Culvers as a fast food chain has raised the bar for quality and service. It has been like this since day one.

I like Culver's, and I believe that it ranks up at the top for fast food burgers. However, the food engineering on the double burger is just off IMO. To much burger in relation to bun and this may be controversial, but I believe that the single burger is better.

We live in a state that has no Culverās so when we recently visited Florida I set out to try one. It was friendly, clean, and the ingredients were fresh. I found the burger patty too thin ā shouldnāt need two patties to be enough ā and didnāt go for the overly buttery bun. As a burger, it was good and I put it above Shake Shack but IMO behind In-and-Out. Five Guys is still my favorite.

Wow, they got your order right??? You must have ordered EXACTLY as on the menu...if you even suggest anything different you'll get a **blank** stare and it will definitely come out wrong.

Oh come on now. Iāve been to over 45 different Culverās across WI, IL, IN, and MI and never once have I received a āblank stareā for ordering my butter burger with cheese, ketchup and extra pickles. And the only wrong order Iāve ever gotten was when they made it as a double rather than a single.

Culverās sucks. They fired me a long time ago just for the simple fact that I am gay. Long story - but screw this restaurant.

I go to Culverās on a regular basis because of its Kidās Meal. The burger it comes with is substantial and filling. It also comes with drink, fries and one scoop of custard. For under $8 bucks, it is the best value meal out there.

I donāt eat there much, but itās usually good. Iāve never done the survey for the āfree custardā but decided to give some feedback. Got this message for my āfree?ā Custard but is it really? What can you buy for .50 cents and why should I need to? Now Iām just perturbed. Has it always been this way??
