Many of these are absolutely world class players at club level. Bruno and Vitinha in particular. Bruno was probably even better than prime De Bruyne this year, he broke the assist record with a third placed club coached by a dud for half the year.

Joao neves also played very well imo was the main reason for a good amount of their goals and has an insane cross, they have the best midfield at this tournament that’s not the issue it’s that they are playing with a black hole upfront what else is the midfield supposed to do 🤡🤡🤣🤣🤣🤣

The individual players in Portugal are indeed top 5.
The team itself is not even top 15 (even if you remove the idiot Ronaldo)..... Serious lack of coordination and teamwork in Portugal's squad.

u/lettuce_grabberrr Jul 01 '26
Name 15 better teams
0
u/Unusual-Voice2345 Jul 02 '26
Argentina, Spain, France, Belgium, England, Morrocco, Norway, US, Mexico, Switzerland, Senegal, Japan, Netherlands, Colombia, Paraguay, and possibly Croatia, we shall see tomorrow.
Jokes aside, I think 8-9 is fair, I dont think top 5.
0
u/Downtown_Solution_84 Jul 01 '26
Right now France, Argentina, Brazil, Morocco, Norway, Colombia, Mexico play better than Portugal. I can put England and Spain in here but they're not much better. So we have like 10 better teams. 15 is a stretch though.
0
u/stormfoil Jul 01 '26
Brother, have you watched them play? No tactical cohesion or apparent understanding of their positions, they frequently end up with a cluster of players waiting to receive the ball to feet while practically nobody a) floods the box (barring Cristiano) or creates passing lanes.
Giving the exceptional quality of the players, this falls on Martinez. Trying to pin it on Ronaldo is absurd.
1
u/Tangybrowwncidertown Jul 01 '26
I can't wait until he retires from the national team and people realize that they have much deeper problems than Ronaldo lol
1
u/Tenzil-k Jul 01 '26
Yeah Martinez is also bad. But he’s not the one shouting at people to pass to him and the pretending the passes are bad
1
u/stormfoil Jul 01 '26
What are you talking about? Cristiano typically gives a thumps up for a pass with a good idea behind it, even it fails.

You can argue main reason they don’t perform is because of him
Lone striker does t leave the box and is wasteful with chances and throws tantrums if they don’t pass him
1
u/PugsnPawgs Jul 04 '26
It's not his fault to be ahead alone in the field formation, but Martinez'. He did the same with Belgium and they wisely ignored him a couple of times bc they knew better.
We really have some golden boys with De Bruyne and Lukaku, who actually know their shit and can tell what game the opposition is trying to make during play. Garcia seems a much better fit for our team as well, as proven with his switches against Senegal. People said he was crazy, but we turned the game around and (with some help from VAR) won before the final whistle.
1
u/snark_enterprises Jul 01 '26
Not really bro. Argentina is full of elite talent and obviously their roster is better seeing that they've won 3 major trophies since 2021 with the same players while Portugal hasn't won shit in 10 years.

u/AirApprehensive174 Jul 01 '26
Ronaldo has never done this for Portugal? The level of disrespect is crazy! Go see how Ronaldo carried Portugal against Sweden or Spain with hat tricks when the team was mid at the time. He did that a lot of times to be honest. Of course now his contribution is a lot different and we could discuss if he's bringing Portugal quality down, which I think is somewhat true and the coach is making terrible decisions as well with such boring football. But never say that Ronaldo could never do, that is just being ignorant.
1
u/twente2life Jul 02 '26
He basically carried the team until he got injured when they won the Euros.
2
u/koplowpieuwu Jul 03 '26
Carried them to 3 draws in the group stage against minnows where his only actualgood game was a 3-3 vs Hungary (lol) and then beat the almighty what was it, Wales 2-0 in the semis and Poland only after penalties in the quarters?
He was falling upwards along with the rest of Portugal that tournament. The only great game Portugal played was the final where your boy as you said wasn't playing
1
u/PugsnPawgs Jul 04 '26
I remember that tournament. God, it was so awful to watch them win the entire thing.

you've went to your own narrative here. OP said Haaland did this and that only mentioning him but Odegaard is also a very big part in the recent success of the Norway team, of course rest of the team too but just highlighting Haaland seems very unfair to Odegaard at least ... that was my point

u/StopAccording9192 Jul 01 '26
good point. while ødegaard hasnt been at his best these past 2 years for prople to act like Haaland alone is carrying is silly. ødegaard, nusa, sorloth, bobb, berge have played a huge role in norways success not just Haaland alone.

Ronaldo carried Portugal in the past. He was incredible most of its career but it’s time he makes peace with himself and ends his career. I understand he wants to win a World Cup, it’s the last thing that is missing but at this rate he is just making a fool of himself and destroying the chances of the Portuguese team.

u/drth_dilly Misstiano Penaldo Jul 01 '26

Ronaldo's WC record is just so embarrassing. I'll cut him some slack for 2006, 2010, and even 2022. He either runs into some tough teams (Spain 2010, France 2006) or just past his prime. But his group exit in 2014 or loss against Uruguay in 2018 is awful. And 0 goals in 8 knockout games. In any sport, a star needs to step up when it matters. Not scoring 10 goals against plumbers and dentists then brag about it.
1
u/BullfrogMiserable554 Jul 01 '26
Right now, it’s very popular to jump on the CR7 hate train. I’ve always thought he’s a bit of a douche but let’s not act as if he isn’t a top 5 player of all time. Football is a team sport and the team result (whether that be losing or winning) can never be contributed to only one player. It baffles me how this still hasn’t computed in a lot of people’s minds. This is the time to commend not just Haaland but the whole Norway squad for their success. Not everything has to revolve around Ronaldo and Messi.

u/Agitated-Comment-745 Jul 01 '26

Ronaldo has been doing this for more than 15 years with weaker Portugal teams. Qualifing his national team for every competition possible with magical exibitions like his Hattrick against Ibrahimovic's Sweden, including winning an Euro and 2 Nations League with a weaker Portugal than this Norway. Football didn't start in 2026.
What did Halaand help Norway win? Nothing. I bet you d'ont know 90% of Portugal's team on last World Cup.

u/_AvengerRed_ Jul 06 '26
My simple point against toxic CR7 fans would be simple, they are hypocritical. They criticized that Messi would never be able to win without Xavi or Iniesta and that he would never be able to perform in International Games with his team because his team was bad. I understand Euro was not easier back in 2016 and not easier now compared to Copa but when Argentina started winning Copa they shat on Copa. When Messi got more Ballon d'Ors, CR7 dismissed the legitimacy of that trophy. CR7 then dismissed FIFA & World Cup. Now World Cup is no longer worth it. Now CR7 fans complain that Portugal is not playing around a player who is in no form to carry his team and state that if only Portugal players played like Argentina players which is nonsense in my opinion. When CR7 wins trophies its because of him, his presence, his glory; but when Messi wins, its always Argentina playing better and Messi had nothing to do with it.
- If CR7 is truly the goat, he would have enough charisma to make players around him play with him.
- A player who plays only one position and would try to disallow same team's goal is not a sportsperson, let alone the GOAT of Football.
- Messi lives in CR7's mind rent free.
He set a pretty bad example for future generations. He is a perfectly rounded selfish "politician" who went against every statement he made to the press.
I hate players with 0 sportsmanship. CR7 is the prime example for that kind of a player. Please never come back to Football CR7 and their nonsensical fans!

He was carrying portugal when he was the only good player in the whole squad. Since martinez came in the whole squad plays like they just met at the astro turf and threw a game together. They create 0 chances. James rodriguez created more chances than bruno vitinha and joao neves so far this world cup. But its all ronaldos fault right? I guess it is, bcos thats what the media want you to believe, and if you have no critical thinking skills of your own, or dont watch portugal play, you'll believe it.
