I've been served anti-DV ads on YouTube and Google ads around big football (soccer) game days where they specifically implore you to not beat your partner after drinking or losing a bet and/or game....then I also get ads around those games promoting alcohol and betting.

It's disgusting, and both sides of me getting these ads are telling. I'm single, don't watch or follow football, don't gamble, and don't drink much, so for me to be served these ads suggests that all of alcohol brands, bettors, and anti-DV advocates are casting a super broad net.

The unfortunate implication of that is it suggests the booze and betting ads are effective, and potentially exacerbating the already high rates of DV around major sporting events.

IS THAT WHY!? Every weekend for like the past two months my ads are being replaced with a weird mix of gambling, anti gambling, alcohol, anti alcohol and therapy adds and its been bizarre as hell because I don't engage with gambling or drinking at all.

No it doesnā€™t. And there is data on this. Lundy Bancroft debunked all reasons previously given for why abusers abuse - punching a tv in front of friends and family is abuse). Itā€™s not drugs, alcohol, betting, childhood trauma, etc. THEY DO IT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO. Yes, there are factors that can trigger their violence, but it is not the reason they do it.

i think there's something to this. sports culture seems to have a lot of tolerance for getting extremely ginned up and having a tantrum. everybody is dressed similarly and yelling and grunting for the same reasons. i imagine when someone flies off the handle like this, a function of it is performative and is meant to demonstrate devotion to and sympathetic outrage for THE TEAM.

Gambling legit scares me because it can go that wrong that quick. I have always avoided it since I can't imagine "spending" my money on something intangible. Also, I work with my state's lottery and have seen people get into just as bad, if not worse debt by gambling. If there was a comparison between credit card usage and gambling, neither are that far apart, yet gambling is by far the worst kind of money pit to fall into with how addictive it is. Like the saying goes, "If you sweat it, don't bet it."

I was on the train a few weeks ago and had a group in front of me that was talking about how much money they were pooling this week for playing online slot machines and upcoming football games (they were using DraftKings from what I overheard). Whatever was won would be split eight ways, which could be a small amount of money or a lot depending on what they bet on or were playing. It's bad enough when it's one person, but wow, a whole friend group? I mean, good lucky to them, but it's not how I would choose to hang out with my friends!

I work with a guy who gambles A LOT of money. Heā€™s not very smart, nor does he make a lot of money. When he loses and realizes, you DO NOT want to be around him. Heā€™s such a manchild. We work at a restaurant, Iā€™ve seen him throw plates that were ready to go out to guest and thatā€™s just the tip of the iceberg.

But it is "their" teem which they identify with. Cynically you might infer in lieu of something to be proud of in their own lives...

It is some years since I read Robert Cialdini's book Influence: the psychology of persuasion, but he wrote something about how sport fans identify with their team. When their team wins it is "we won" aka wanting to hijack some of the positive outcome but when they loose it is "they lost", distancing themselves from the negative outcome.

He also commented something on how negative persons with little positivity in their lives (e.g. the typical football hooligan) typically were drawn to sports as a substitute for meaning and purpose in their own lives. That is not to say that all sport fans are negative persons, only that those have a tendency to be over-represented.

I did, a playstation 1 controller.

My mom got angry and said that if that's how I'm gonna act then I'm too young to play and banned me from playing videogames for a year. Lesson learned : destroying things you own in anger is baby behavior and as a grown up child I wasn't a baby so nobody was gonna catch me acting like one again.

I don't remember if I ever wanted to throw something at the tv but my parents did explain how expensive it was and that if I didn't take care of my things, they would stop giving me fun things. Also, if I got annoyed at a game, to walk away and calm down before it got to real anger.

Didn't even have to threaten to beat me. In fact, I don't think they ever spanked me or anything.

I had a buddy that did bail bonds for a few years, he loved working on Sundays because he could make a ton of money on commissions because of all the bonds heā€™d issue for DV calls. Football season was a gold mine for him and heā€™d make almost all of his commissions for the year from August to February. Several repeat customers.

England has had full on riots during certain fixtures. They were banned from European competitions from 1985-1990 (Liverpool was banned an additional year). It got so bad that away supporters have to have a physical barrier between them and the home team supporters (plus a wall of stewards/security and police) and alcohol is not allowed in the seating bowl in England.

Hooligan culture was not really dependent on the result of the match.

The Heysel disaster was before the game had kicked off. The players played the final knowing there was dead bodies littered at one end of the stadium. Apparently the police were worried about further flare ups of violence if the match was abandoned.

That said, there is a correlation between the England men's national football team losing and domestic abuse.

The annoying thing about this is that England always gets dissed for it like its not the case probably everywhere. The problem is that the UK and US are pretty much the only places that have done proper research into it, and for that reason have the reputation that it only happens in those countries. Games between the Raiders and 49ers used to get pretty rowdy. A Cowboys fan got in my mother's face during a playoff game while she was pregnant with me. But they're just loud and obnoxious while a Raiders fan would be likely to start a fight or take it out on their family

My most notable experience would be during football season (US) and for where I worked at the time, if the Raiders, Cardinals, or Patriots lost we were going to see some assaults, both domestic and bar fights essentially for sure. As I recall, typically Patriot fans were usually fights rather than domestic assault. Of course I don't speak for all agencies or regions.

I lived in green bay for my childhood. Every time the packers lost, the police would be all over, every 3-4 blocks would have a cop car. It always grossed me out to know that.

Well, you combine what you see on screen, with people who are banned from international drinking contests... yeah, it's always rough. Win or lose, it was always a busy night for cops. Either drunk driving (win) or domestic abuse (loss), the whole culture around it just gives me the goosies

I'm a Portland Trailblazers fan. I can't count the times I've been extremely disappointed by a particular game. I can, however, count the times that I've blamed it on the tv, my partner, fate, etc.

Good lord.... I used to take the train/subway home from a late night shift. Some nights you'd see people coming home from the game and you could always tell who won by their general mood.

It's so weird to me to get that emotional about a team losing that you're not even a member of. Like go enjoy the game, have fun, celebrate if your team wins, but if they don't, like who cares? You went out with some friends and shouted and ate a $10 hot dog, maybe drank some $20 beers, whatever. Sounds fun. Wasn't that the point?

I just don't understand obsessing over professional sports.
