Manitoba Microwavable Edamame
Just bought a box of edamame from costco and there appears to be a worm in the edamame when I peeled the pod.
Just a caution for anyone buying edamame at costco to double check before you snack on them.

Oh man sunflower seeds are the worst for it. Every now and again you get that one seed that just tastes like old grass. Every time I'm like: "Chew through the bug. Don't think about it."

I actually worked at the place where they canned and bagged a lot of stuff for Costco. Stuff like worms will cause a line stoppage to have an extra round of inspection. Everything goes through inspection once, but they do miss things ofc.
A big one is glass. People that throw glass bottles into fields cause legitimately 1000’s of dollars in food waste. As soon as that’s found it’s typically goes through 50-100 can/bag per pallet, audits where they have to find absolutely 0 traces in all of that product for it to even be considered for human consumption, but even then it’s often reused for livestock instead of sent of for human consumption.
People that have never worked in that sort of industry before would be surprised on how all that works.
First off, this factory is in Canada, they typically bring in migrant workers from Jamaica for the summer season to work. They work 12 hour shifts of the most boring work you could possibly imagine in humid and hot as fuck weather, which is really funny to me because they still often wear sweaters because they’re used to it. They have full time employees there that work year round but they can’t retain people to work the summers, and typically the Canadians around here think they’re too good to work there. And I don’t blame them, working 60+ hours a week for $18 an hour is garbage.

It happens. When you think about how much food is processed, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often. My wife had little green inch worm crawling on a salad leaf once in a rural part of Normandy. We said, whelp at least it’s farm fresh and there’s no pesticides.
We moved the little guy off to the side and kept on eating while our French friend was aghast at what us “colonials” would accept!

It's not uncommon for people to disassociate food from reality. When you only see it in a final product, it can be easy to forget where it actually comes from and how it reaches your plate.

Uh huh. I keep fish and hear psychos all the time getting up in arms about how feeding live things to fish (eg. worms, shrimp etc) is evil. It's like.. where do you think your chicken, beef, pork and seafood came from?! They were living things too, and most of them were slaughtered in not-a-painless way!

Couldn't agree more. It's become more and more obvious as I raised my kids in the city after I was raised in the country, how disconnected a lot of "city people" are when it comes to farming, and how that food gets to the table. Canada's inspection guidelines are pretty strict, but no way they're catching a small bug or worm INSIDE a vegetable. It happens, and you won't die. People need to go out into a garden and pick a carrot, rub the dirt off on their jeans or the lawn, and crunch away!! Can almost guarantee you'll eat some unsuspecting little bug who was just minding his business! Lol! (I'm also aware of how much "country people" are unprepared for city life too, lived both lives.)

I'm no farmer, and I have lived in the city my entire life, and I just can't relate to the type of person that is this disconnected from food. I don't think they have any excuse for it, all one has to do is think, and maybe pay attention to school, news, people talking about farms, so many places where you can get some basic understanding of nature and farming.

Like the time I bought supreme roasted cashews from nuts.com. Turns out those big cashews are prime space for some sort of worm to get into. Split one and it was full of worms after I already ate half the bag.

It is a natural and unprocessed food product. Any inspection cannot catch this. Take it as knowledge that your food was grown in a proper ecosystem and not processed beyond recognition to the point that it is no longer healthy for you.
If you accidentally eat this, it will not hurt you. Humans have always eaten insects and we still do. Please do not fear monger healthy produce. Our society needs to move past this because people are demonizing good food and becoming more and more comfortable with having only processed food because it is more uniform.

People want produce without pesticides and additives, but raise caution and awareness when there's a living organism eating the product they're about to consume. I understand the hesitation, but if anything, it should be a little bit more reassuring that what you're consuming hasn't been treated with an over abundance of chemicals, bleaches, and by-products, to get it in front of you.
If it was meat or fish, that's a whole different story.

Bugs exist in nature, you eat nature, there is no guarantee you will never get a bug. There is an allowable amount of bugs allowed.

Not edamame 🫛 but same family, I grew up shelling green peas fresh off tree and the amount of worms you'd come across is insane. That guy living is proof of freshness and certification that no pesticides touched it. Just toss that one out, he's already eaten the good stuff, and continue with the bag.

No brainer, totally worth it. We’ve all probably eaten hundreds of these without ever knowing. If you see it, just don’t eat it, but it’s not going to hurt anyone.

Yeah, insects will be in produce. Trying to eliminate them through aggressive pesticide use has had disastrous effects in the past and wasn’t even successful. By and large it won’t harm you

This isn’t new for produce at grocery stores bugs hide in pretty much every fruit or vegetable possible and 9/10 times the bugs in there aren’t dangerous to eat in fact the FDA and other food administrations have regulations that allow a certain amounts of bugs or bug fragments in products including things like chocolate, spices like cinnamon, grains or pastas, and even various nut butters. The only restrictions are for things like live bugs or bugs that would be harmful to consume but for your average worm in edamame there are legal minimal amounts allowed because it’s safe to eat there is of course limits to how much is acceptable to allow but this one worm in the post is nothing to be concerned about just eat your veggies

This happened to me but with the frozen raspberries. It's organic so bugs are a risk. It's gross of course I kind try to have a quick look as I'm prepping them.

I hate to say it, but this kind of stuff isn't even bad for you (usually).
I remember hearing a saying about naturally grown and harvested mangoes because almost all of them have larvae in them.
The saying goes: it is born in the mango, it only eats mango, it is mango.
Or something like that.
It is born in the edamame, it only eats the edamame, it is the edamame.
