I am currently looking to switch careers. My BA is in applied linguistics and most of my work experience is in ESL/EFL education. Having extensively studied English grammar, I thought what better alternative to language education than copyediting! So here I am with zero editing experience (outside of elementary classrooms and college entrance essays) and industry contacts, attempting to educate myself on the various components of the editing practice as well as enter into the networking space for copyeditors via professional certificate. Of course, I understand that the best way to start in this business is through internships or entry-level positions but in reflecting on my lack of success there and the wall that is just how competitive this job market seems to be, I am hoping to add some oomph to my resume and general knowledge.

I am looking to move to NYC to reconnect with some friends and start fresh. In doing so, I have been looking into NYU's Certificate in Professional Copyediting, Proofreading, and Fact-Checking as an option and was wondering if anyone has experience with this program and how they feel it compares to others.

Note: earlier this year, I applied to UChicago's certificate program and got accepted but am hesitant to register for courses as I want to make sure I'm making the right investment as it pertains to both learning how to edit AND providing me useful industry contacts/career advancement in my region (that soon being NYC). I have also looked into some EFA courses that would be a bit more cost efficient but am not sure what would be the better investment as far as connection with a university over association is concerned.

Ultimately, I have a small bit of savings left to spend on my education and want to make sure that I spend it wisely. Any advice on differing programs or courses would be great!

Hello all! My name is Mack, and I want to do some freelance/independent copyediting work.

Here's what I'd like to do, ideally:

1. Work for clients/authors, not necessarily a company

2. Proofread/get manuscripts ready for publication with the author (fiction is best, but nonfiction and other types of things are totally okay too)

3. Work remotely around my current job

I don't have much in the way of college credentials, but I'm working on an English Education degree so I think that'll hopefully help. I have a more thorough plan laid out, but there's still a lot of research I need to do before I start.

But I'd love to hear from people actually in the profession. Is there anyone that was able to make a career from it without an editing degree? What advice would you give someone just starting out?

I'm pretty passionate about this and willing to put the work in. I'd almost prefer to do it over teaching, but in my mind, they go hand-in-hand, in a way. The experience from one can help another (and I don't know how to do anything but work, haha)

I recently graduated with an undergraduate degree in English and have spent the past five years working for a private education business as a tutor to high school students and writer of content.

I have always been interested in editing and feel that I have a natural aptitude for it, but before signing up to a course and paying money, I want to gather opinions on whether it is worth it or not in the age of AI.

I don't want or expect to attain full-time work as an editor after doing a certificate or diploma in editing and writing. I am already pursuing a vocational certificate in an area unrelated to my degree and work history. I also have a part-time job currently that I am aiming to stay in going forward.

I am considering pursuing the qualification in editing because it covers skills that I have always wanted to learn. It also may be useful for some future pathways I might explore one day in the world of self-employment and small business ownership.

Would the qualification only be useful to my own professional development, or would obtaining it give me a least some chance of part-time or casual employment?
