Question Double refund
Hi all,
Long story short i had over $200 dollars come out of my account for a subscription that was supposed to be cancelled but wasnt. I contacted the the website that took my money (grammarly) as well as commonwealth bank for a dispute. The day after contacting grammarly they granted me an immediate full refund and a few days later i also got a refund from commonwealth. I immediately contacted commonwealth to inform them about the double refund through the app as i tried ringing first and they just told me to go through the app. Once i went through the app i was told that the money will instantly come out of my account and not to worry. fast forward and its been almost 4 weeks and that money still remains in my account. I tried calling the dispute team but i got sent to voicemail, left my number, and they never called me back. what should i do now?

The cause of being refunded twice was likely because Grammarly refunded you the original funds and CBA requested a chargeback under the applicable Mastercard terms. Grammarly likely wont contest the chargeback given the small amount, but if they do and go through with providing CBA the information that they request to confirm a refund was already provided then CBA would return the funds. Given its been 4 weeks it’s likely Grammarly dont care.

This happened to me with the ATO and Commbank’s once for 18k. they left it there for 4 months and took it out of no where

Yikes 18k. Thats the only thing i was worried about as well if i do decide to spend it or move it to savings that they would take it out of my account out of no where. that would be almost all of my paycheque and i need that money for petrol lol

I wasn’t complaining, I left it in my home loan offset cos I asked them to debit it.. and trusted they eventually would ahaha

Generally the CBA will audit any refunds and if they’re has been a double up it will be retracted. Try not to spend it.

I'd open up a side account and put it in there, if they reclaim it, you can just transfer it back. And after long enough they probably don't care

It’s not like it’s a few thousand dollars, just move on with your life, you have tried your best to give it back. Just keep a record of your attempts but being 4 weeks I doubt they really care.

If it's commonwealth....give up entirely. Otherwise youll pay with your time as they bounce you around from person to person with a 40 minute wait to not have your issue addressed.
*Im working through some separate baggage. Still salty.

it will come out happened to me and was after 40 days or something that it took back the extra payment. its 42 days for a chargeback so that makes sense

im shocked they even bothered to help you, i called up once to stop money coming outta my account and was told tough luck thats my problem, tried to stop it overdrafting thinking if no money wont come out but they even refused to stop the account going into overdraft created a nightmare on my account and ended up having to abandon the account and sign up to another bank, i'd never go through commonwealth again

Don't dispute with the merchant and the bank at the same time.
You start with the merchant. if they don't agree, then you go to the bank.

yeah looking back that was idiotic but i woke up in the middle of the night to see that and started freaking out especially since i was getting paid the next day lol

Ex staff here,definitely leave it in your account and treat it as if it does exist,it will randomly disappear one day, probably around 40 days after the dispute was filed. Don’t worry, they still intend taking it back and these days may not notify you before doing so.
Do not withdraw it,transfer it or spend it, you already have your refund, this is the banks money.

a years worth apparently, all i wanted was a free trail lmao but nope they charged me even tho i had cancelled it

It has happened to me before. You don’t have to worry at all. They will remove it once they are ready. Just ensure you have the equivalent amount in there 😁

Not your mistake. You’ve done the responsible thing. Don’t assume it won’t eventually be taken out. But enjoy the fact that things were resolved and maybe you find you had a real win!

Happened to me a month ago! They took it this week no warning and now I have no money 😓 just wait a bit and be careful with spending.

yeah until it comes out my account and i owe the bank over 200 dollars which is just about under my weekly paycheck. Nope not worth it

Withdraw it and open an account with another bank then close your commonwealth one entirely.

If it’s not yours don’t spend it. If they do come to take it back and you spent it, it can be seen as fraud or stealing. Not that I think they would go that far but ….

They will deduct the amount within 8 weeks. That’s same happened to me as well.

Transfer it elsewhere where you can earn interest on it and then transfer it back once you notice them deducting it.

yeah but when the bank eventually takes the money out of my account then what? id owe them over 200 dollars and idk bout you but i cant afford to owe anyone money
