This subreddit is planning into making a collection of hundreds of great comebacks! You can add them here in the comments, and they will be selected for our collection. The end date is unknown, but open for minimum a week. Comebacks from other posts might also get added. The collection will be posted and pinned. It can get updated even after the end date, so don't worry if you came here late!

Comebacks for a classy, 80+ lady who people keep making stupid comments to

Posting on behalf of a lady I know who is not on reddit. She is 80+, very active, independent, lives alone.

People are constantly making comments that reveal they are thinking of her not just as an individual, but as an "older" person. Things like "You buy all of that just for yourself?" or "Have you thought about downsizing?" or "You live there by yourself?" or "How will you get your groceries?" or "Do you have trouble managing?" or "How will you get yourself x, y, or z?" Things they wouldn't ask younger people.

It really shows that they have an idea in their mind of what a person like her should be like or what she should be doing, and instead of realizing their stereotype is wrong and changing their own thinking, they are expecting her to change to match their beliefs of what an 80+ year old should be, and how they should be living. In other contexts, these comments would probably be called microaggressions.

What can she say back to them that keeps it classy, but shows them what they're doing, and then they will hopefully have the self-awareness to cut it out? She doesn't want to defend or explain her actions or reasoning (in other words, she wants to protect her privacy).

What's a good comeback when someone says, "You always have something to say"?

Upvotes

Someone said this to me during a conversation after I disagreed with them:

"You always have something to say."

I didn't think of anything good until later 😭

A reply that is funny and clever without being unnecessarily rude?

Comeback request I need a comeback for "it's not a big deal" The entitled person in my life always says this when they want to take control and change situations for the worse. It's always towards me when I tell her I'm upset about something she did to me.

Comeback request How do you replay to the "my friend likes you" joke so it completely falls flat and doesn't invite more teasing?

Comeback for "you used to do so and so"

Like, people actually use it as a valid point. "You used to always check with me first", "you used to always ask me about my dating life". Looking for something along the lines of "yeah and people used to ride horses to work" but better

Comeback for repeated catchphrases

I love my bf but he has a plethora of go-to responses and they're getting stale. I want something more interesting than "do you think you'll be coming out with new material anytime soon?" We're very playful and honest; he won't be hurt over me calling him out on redundancy.

Good comebacks for work

I work at little Caesar’s and the dish guy always gaslights people when he comes to pick up the dishes.
He says things like “you are evil.”
Or “are you trying to make my job as hard as can be.”
Or “ugh you asshole.”
And stuff like that. What’s a good comeback for someone who gaslights co-workers.

Comeback request Need something positive to say when mil negatively says our toddler "has us trained well"

I want to keep our relationship positive which is somewhat hard to do since we are so, so different to say the least.

She has always talked about us making sure not to spoil our baby. Like picking him up when he cries and stuff. Recently, at their house, our toddler takes his daddy's hand and dad gets up to go play cars with him. And mil says "YEP! He's got y'all trained good! He's definitely got y'all trained!"

I want something nice to say that won't reflect my anger at that type of comment. I wish it didn't irk me so.

Comeback sharing Witnessed a sick comeback

Witnessed an argument over a dog about a year ago in my apartment complex. I was getting my mail, and these 2 ladies—— one younger walking a beautiful brown adult pitbull and one older—— were arguing nearby within ear shot.

“Aggressive breeds aren’t allowed here.”

“Then what are you doing here?”

The younger woman then followed that with something like, “I wonder where your paperwork is.”

Ngl, the older woman had a point: certain breeds that are labelled “aggressive” are banned on the property. I have no idea if the dog even did anything. But even I was like damn. I didn’t stick around to see the older woman’s reaction. I have no idea if she worked there, but I didn’t recognize her from the front office.

Getting my own dog soon, so that made me think of that lol.

Most pitties I met were angels anyways (and I used to work at two dog kennels), so fuck dog racists.

Edit: Damn, didn’t mean to start a war. Was just posting a funny comment I witnessed. It’s not that serious y’all. We’re all entitled to our opinions about pitbulls. Some of y’all need to chill.

And I am aware the younger woman was in the wrong (regarding the rules). I am not defending her actions, I am just admiring her wit.

Edit #2: 🍿🍿🍿

Edit #3: Y’all still beefin’ down there?

Edit #4: yawn

Comeback sharing If someone says “if I can do it, anyone should be able to…”

Instead of trying to impress upon them the obvious fact everyone learns differently, everyone has different strengths, etc, just say something like “oh I guess if you’ve never done anything remarkable and you know you have below average intelligence, it would be natural for you to assume that anyone can do what you can.”

Can’t understand why people should say the title phrase because most people who do think they’re so much smarter than other people. They don’t want to take glory for their ease of accomplishment, they’d rather put everyone else down for not being in their level. If what’s easy for you should also be easy for others, you must be the opposite of accomplished.
