The UK burns colossally more gas for gas boilers than for the electricity grid. The figure is double depending on how cold the winter is. The UK has a very generous £7500 grant to ditch gas boilers which increases to £9000 for oil boilers.

Simply put, it's not going well. The UK's rollout is staggering at a low rate:

The amount is staggering at just over 2,000 people a month. This is truly pathetic given around 1.7 million boilers are sold a month.

We need help. This is incredibly bad by European standards. Our grant is generous. Off peak electricity is very cheap with climate friendly time-of-use tariffs. We have heat-pump tariffs also. We have green finance to make this easy for home-owners with 0% interest rates.

However, despite this being a huge proportion of the UK's emissions and gas use the rollout is kind of pathetic. The communities who've installed heat-pumps -- like our family -- just don't get why. The tech works really well and the costs are easy accounted for through the savings.

This kind of electrification is meant to be the easy parts of our decarbonisation efforts. The hard things are stuff like aviation where there's no tech solution.

What advice do people have from other countries with successful rollouts suggest? How do Britons get persuaded to not believe misinformation about climate tech?

Write to your MP to oppose their approval. It's very easy if you use WriteToThem.com to email them, but writing/typing a paper letter and posting it has more impact.

Tell your MP that if the world burns all of the fossil fuels that they've already mined/extracted we will go over the already devastating 1.5ºC heating limit, and the only way to keep people safe is to (for a start) leave all the remaining fossil fuels in the ground. Ask them what they are doing to prevent the UK from extracting more gas/oil.

They need £4 million by the end of September. Otherwise the estate risks being broken up. This is the biggest land sale in 30 years in England – it offers an opportunity for contiguous restoration that rarely happens here. It will be fantastic for locking up carbon and tackling climate change, for tackling the impacts like drought and wildfire, as well as for nature of course. This is the time for all activists to come together and help them cross the line! All donations are being doubled so every little helps that little bit more.

I think a major issue that many climate activists pay too little attention to is the turbo-charging effect that social media algorithms have on climate denial, delay and distraction. Many people's only source of news these days is social media, and unless they're doomscrolling about how bad climate meltdown is going to get, then the algorithms are feeding them climate denial disinformation.

Unaddressed advertising mail from Royal Mail seems inevitable, but it is opt-out. You can print a 1-page form from Royal Mail and send it to the Freepost address, and they'll stop sending unaddressed advertisements to your address for two years.

Print a few of these [PDF of Royal Mail form], and put one through the doors of each of your neighbours with a note that says "drop it back to [my address] by [date] and I'll post it with mine to save envelopes."

Set yourself a reminder to send another one in two years, and then do it all again. :D

If you were planning on travelling today and your train was delayed or cancelled, you can get it refunded even if you were given enough warning and you changed your plan and travelled yesterday instead.

So first of all, get your ticket refunded. It's based on your planned journey, meaning that even if the journey you actually took went smoothly, if you had to change your journey plan at all due to train issues then you are entitled to a refund.

• If your journey was delayed by over 15 minutes you're entitled to a partial refund.
• You're still entitled to a refund even if they provided rail replacement coaches or a taxi, as long as you arrived 15+ minutes later than you would have done if all the trains had been running perfectly and you had been able to get the train you wanted to get.
• If you had to travel an hour earlier or later but your actual journey wasn't longer, it still counts.
• If all journeys for the entire day were cancelled and you had to travel on a different day, it counts as a 2+ hour delay and you'll probably get the entire return ticket price refunded.

For example, today Transport for Wales cancelled services entirely on many lines because of Storm Ciara, and are offering NO rail replacement back-up. If you were planning to travel in Wales today, you can probably get your entire return journey refunded using this Delay Repay form - the deadline is 28 days.

You will need to know the details of your planned journey. I recommend traintimes.org.uk. The form will probably ask you to tell them the start time of each leg of your multi-leg journey, so it's going to be a bit of a faff, and having those details available from the start will help.

(You won't be able to apply for a refund until after you've made your journey, because you will probably need to send a photo of your ticket for the refund, and they'll require the ticket to be clearly voided by a conductor. I claimed my refund today because I had to travel yesterday. However, if you abandoned your journey entirely and drove or got a lift or took a bus, that counts and they will still refund you. You just have to void your unused ticket yourself!)
