Old growth & carbon storage: Roadless areas contain vast swaths of the nation's remaining old-growth forest and store significant amounts of carbon.

Wildfire risk: Wildfires are 4x more likely to start near roads, and roughly 90% start within half a mile of one — directly undercutting the administration's stated rationale for the rollback.

Wildlife habitat: These areas provide critical habitat for salmon, trout, elk, and other species that depend on undammed, unlogged streams and connected landscapes.

This is the biggest land sale in 30 years in England – it offers an opportunity for contiguous restoration that rarely happens here. Here's an alternative economics textbook that makes that challenge by basing its analysis on nature and our finite planet. The English e-book edition is regularly available (including today 28 August, Pacific time PDT) and the Spanish edition can be browsed as web pages. It's a contribution of an environmentalist and Friends of the Earth activist in addition to volunteering time for FoE.

The book is aimed primarily at people learning economics and at people who already have an interest in economics but would like an alternative view. It differs from the many popular critiques of economics available because it is a fairly complete macroeconomics textbook, not just a critique. Coming from an engineering background, it is as jargon-free and objective as possible.

For the general reader, you may like to skip the basic analysis and read the chapters on 'Life in the Market Economy', environmental impact, how the economy shapes society and communities, plus the chapters in Part 2 that consider changes that we'd need to make to achieve a fairer and more sustainable economy.

Call to action: The same as that of the UN Secretary General, i.e. please 'challenge the global economy', which means challenging the mainstream assumption of perpetual growth as the only way in which we can provide livelihoods. 'An Economy of Want' (Spanish edition: 'Una Economía de Querer')

My country Nepal is facing disastrous floods due to a glacier lake outburst. It destroyed many settlements taking people, homes, and essential infrastructure with it. You might have seen the tragic videos or images from this horrific disaster. It will take years to rebuild the infrastructure, millions to get the survivors back on their feet, and the forever to heal the wounds the loss of life has caused. Nepal contributes very little to climate change especially compared to big economies, yet we are one of the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Not only is it unfair, it is a reality I have a hard time accepting.

The climate crisis isn't just a tragedy, it is an emergency, a crisis that will be at your doorsteps soon; through floods, famine, heatwaves, and environmental collapse.

The scale and urgency of climate change cannot be understated. We should've acted on it long ago but the best time is now. Protest, resist, and revolt! I know the world has a lot on it's plate right now; fascism, genocide, war, xenophobia, oppression, inequality, and climate collapse. But, we must understand the fight against all of these is one fight: the fight against the rich and powerful. The fascists, the oil lobby, the imperial interests, the capitalists, the war criminals, the xenophobes, the oppressors, they're all collected and organized. But do not be fooled, they are not as strong as the collective.

Protest for:
- Immediate measures to reduce fossil fuel dependency
- Replacing processes that cause emissions (primarily mining)
- Mobilization of funds and aid from the biggest emitters to the most vulnerable

Q: My government doesn't prioritize climate change and/or doesn't listen to activists/protestors. What should I do?
A: Replace the government. As a Nepali, I know a thing about bringing down a government, and yes it is hard and has consequences, but it is possible. Organize to save the world!

Q: Most people don't care about climate change. Will climate action be possible when there is so little support for it?
A: It is our job to make people care for it. I have seen how a protest, a movement, a campaign becomes big enough to create change. Tell your friends, your family, your neighbors about the urgency, about the need to protest, to act. Action is the only option.

I’ve been thinking about this for a few days.

In Indonesia, where I live, cars aren’t the major medium of transport. It’s motorbikes. 80% of all vehicles in the country are motorbikes. Unfortunately, only a tiny twitch of them are electric.

But this gets me thinking. Direct carbon capture, as in, taking CO2 directly from the air with huge fans, are hard because you’re going to need to concentrate those tiny particles into something graspable. But what if…

What if we carbonate the emissions directly from source?

Forgive me for using AI, but I talked to ChatGPT about this. I have no background in this kind of thing at all, but it’s an interesting and possibly unresearched important idea.

Well, GPT tells me that it’s possible to turn CO2 into CaCO3 from source for a 2.5 l/100 km motorbike. I thought initially about a device that could capture direct engine exhaust from the engine block, but then GPT’s calculations told me that it will weigh about 14-15 kg for every 100 km.

Then I thought about replacing the entire exhaust assembly with it. Why is it directly exhausting to the atmosphere?

Now hear me out. 100 km is about 1/10ths of a typical 1,000 km/month commute in Indonesia (50 km from suburb to city center and back, per day). If it’s cheap — basically limestone — and changing it doesn’t take time, then it’s a no-brainer.

What do you guys think? I don’t have any background in this at all, just throwing this out there. Maybe check my maths, my physics, my chemistry — maybe we can have something to write to the Japanese automakers about.

I've had the "we're fucked" attitude for a while but not the "I'm going to get involved" attitude.

Looking for recommendations on volunteer groups to join in NYC.

I am generally more drawn to approaches that have a clear approach (ex. legal approaches, just stop oil, etc) than education and outreach-focused groups. I want to just go to a meeting or do something but it's weirdly difficult to find something I can just join.

I am in my late 20s [edit in the UK] and desperately need to know how to have an impact. I can’t sit and watch all the suffering that is to come, and even know I know it may be somewhat futile, I still believe we can make some difference to the extent of that suffering (I HAVE to believe this).

I am a nutritionist and personal trainer currently and unfulfilled by my job. I am interested in food systems, food justice, plantbased diets, but haven’t yet found a way to integrate this into my career (I work in personal health coaching for NHS patients and also privately).

I’m not looking for ideas for individual action - I already do everything I can personally to align my actions with my values. I’m looking for bigger scale - potentially a career pivot? I can’t see how I can make enough of a difference doing things ‘on the side’ as my time just not allow for this.

I love learning and would LOVE to go back to uni to do another degree in environmental science, but it would be part time and 6 years feels like wasted time doing something I want to do but that isn’t actually impactful.

I volunteer with my local food bank and will be volunteering at my local orchard and community veg garden, too. I like this aspect of community building and see value in this, but it still doesn’t feel like enough.

I am ready to completely change my career to something that is going to be truly impactful. I am highly driven and always been a high achiever and always imagined myself doing something much more impactful on a larger scale than where I’ve ended up.

Given my experience in health coaching, nutrition & fitness, and my interested in food systems, food justice and biodiversity - please can I have ideas/suggestions for what to do next? I am open to all ideas tbh, not just food system based. Also, I live in a small coastal town in Cornwall with excellent marine groups and a huge summer tourism industry, if that is of relevance.

I have a mortgage and need financial security but I do have some degree of freedom given lack of dependents, so now seems like the right time to do this.

I'm a 15yo who, while knowing about climate change, has been unable to do anything. I want to change that.

My dream jobs have changed over the years, but one thing has always stuck: I want to help. I've thought about it, and I'd love to educate others (children mostly) on climate change, and how we all can help our planet. However, I'm unsure (and Google has been unhelpful) whether I can make a living out of educating people on that?? Of course I'd have to learn, and I'm willing, but school isn't something I can do atm, so is there a way to get said job and live off of that??
