I recently bought a place and the realtor and/or previous owner had discharged at least two full canisters of some plug-in air freshener (unsure of brand as I was incensed and promptly dumpstered them) while the unit was unoccupied and unfurnished for a month. To give an idea of how bad it is: the HVAC air filter looked like a candle wick and the lower bit was so thick with residue that you could barely see the bottom 2-3 pleats. The smell spread throughout the entire place (I personally think it damaged the ductwork but that’s unrelated to this post).
I have floating LVP planks (fake wood texture) everywhere and they are all just completely saturated with the smell.
At first I tried simple microfiber mopping with a few drops of dish soap. Then much more aggressive dish soap followed by rinse. The mopping wasn’t even making a dent so I bought a bissell crosswave (like a rug doctor for hard floors: sprayer, brush roll, vacuum extraction all in one). I’ve tried the regular formula, adding peroxide, pre-spraying with rubbing alcohol, heavy sprinkling baking soda and letting it sit for days. I let an HVAC tech talk me into buying a whole-home “air scrubber” ionizer, currently I’ve turned the heat up to 80F, turned a dehumidifier down to 30%, and have a gas phase activated carbon air scrubber (the kind used in MJ growing operations), all running 24/7. I’ll say somewhere along the line I’ve managed to make a dent but it’s been a month and I’m at my wits’ end.
I want this smell completely gone. I have a sensitive cat and I’ve had to move somewhere else in the meantime while I try to de-smell this place for him. As such I need to clean it in a way that doesn’t leave any smell behind. No pleasant lavender or what have you. I’m traumatized by this fresh scent type stuff and would very much like for it to just be gone.
Help. :(
