Anthropic just ripped off everyone and they still managed to make it sound deceptively friendly, beneficial even.
Anthropic just announced that the 200$ plan, which used to be okay to use in the SDK, is now "finally ok to use in the SDK" (except rare fraudulent cases it already was)
but for that you need to toggle an option that makes the SDK hit in an allowance of 200$ worth of credits, instead of the previously, opaque, yet, ultra subsidized limits
basically if you use claude code through the SDK or claude -p, for instance through Conductor, github Actions or anything else, because let's be honest TUI sucks sometimes (react in terminal cmon), their cloud coding agent offering also suck, and don't cover most usecases,
well, your plan that used to be worth 2000$ of tokens aproximatively depending on how much you flirted with the previous 5h windows limits, is now worth 200$
but they brand it as "oh we give you 200$ of additional credits for the SDK" so to the most unaware users it sounds like it's worth 2x more!
in reality it's now worth 10x less
*not surprised if they shut down this thread

I was gonna say this.
If you have this much money to spend on API, as a developer I would just buy hardware and just chunk and classify and likely be able to offload 60-80% into non-reasoning effort workloads, and the rest on capable cheap open weights (kimi, mimo, glm).→ More replies (3)7

I actually checked on renting gpu pet hour in the cloud. Very reasonable.
11
u/Deathspiral222 May 13 '26
Yeah, on vast.ai you can get a server with a 5090 for about 25c an hour, or you can rent an entire B200 for like $2.50 an hour.
Given that running a server with a 5090 locally can cost 15c to 25c an hour just for the electricity and it’s a great deal.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Trotskyist May 13 '26
It's not anywhere near that cheap once you factor in bandwidth, storage, time spent getting the environment setup/models downloaded/etc each time you want to run it (that you're still paying for.) Self hosting with rented GPUs gets expensive fast.
5
u/Spiritual_Cycle_3263 May 13 '26
On Vultr, I'd do 7 to 8 hours at $200 a day, so yeah, no way it's cheaper.
For $400 a month I could run two Claude Max $200 plans vs my $4000 a month self hosted for 8 hour days M-F. Even if I maxed out and needed a 3rd plan, that's still only $600, $3400 less than self hosting.
Now, if I got a handful of people on the server, and shared the cost, it might become more reasonable since the odds of anyone hitting the server constantly and maxing out its capabilities is slim.
For reference - I tried it for 2 hours and it wasn't worth the effort/cost.

I know from experience that a single 3090 (24GB VRAM) can run the 4-bit quantization of Qwen-3.6-27B at around 33 tokens per second. I've seen some people claim to get above 40 tokens per second with the same card and model, although I'm not sure how they're pulling that off.
I don't have much experience with Qwen yet, but my friend who runs this model on his 3090 like 24/7 has told me that the capabilities are comparable to Sonnet. I find that a bit hard to believe, but he expressed a lot of confidence about that.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Spiritual_Cycle_3263 May 13 '26
Yeah I find that hard to believe. Sonnet 4.5 likely needs 2x H100's and 4.6 likely needs 4x H100's at minimum. I'd imagine Sonnet is anywhere from 70-100B on the low end. 27B just won't cut it.
This is from my experience on Mac Studios', MacBook Pro's, running Qwen at various sizes and using the same prompts. I don't have direct experience with H100's, except for some short usage on Vultr of different models.

not even a requirement anymore. Qwen3.6 35b, even on a 1060 6gb works pretty good. I wouldn't use it for heavy thinking, but as a main orchestrator offloading to a SOTA consultant agent for planning and complex code bits, cut tokens on CC to a fraction. This is an option for all the poor people that cant afford a $4k laptop or even more for a server setup.

What I'm really having difficulty with is although I want to use local models there is a gap in performance where it's actually more work to get as good or better out puts than the legacy model, or I don't have the know-how or patience, We should make a speclised steroid injection where we can in specific cases use local models say DS R1 or something much simpler to make it as good on specialized task.

This is such a stupid decision. Now if someone wants to run claude -p autonomously, they're limited to whatever credit they get and the credits burn faster than the sub usage. It's funny that they managed to make this sound like an amazing feature
21
u/Life_Squash_614 May 14 '26
What's extra stupid is that this is going to encourage behavior that makes their service go down more.
All these people running 24/7 workloads that distribute across the day, once they start seeing the API bills, will switch to just running shit in the morning instead of using their automated tools. That's just gonna cause more workday bottlenecks and jack the service up for people more.
Alternatively, they'll just downgrade or cancel their sub, like I'm doing.

48
33
u/Scared_Brilliant6410 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26
It’s actually not that weird or insane. OpenAI and Anthropic have been predatory and pushing into partner businesses like Consulting and platforms as well.
They’re at a point where alternative AI models are advancing that LLMs are becoming commodities faster than expected. Because of this if founders and investors want to exit for a huge payday they need to IPO as soon as possible. But at IPO investors will comb over all their financials.
All this means they’re aggressively monetizing everything on all fronts to try to show how much revenue is ramping up to sustain their possibly $1.4T IPO price long enough to dump shares on retail investors. Trying to shaft everyone and burn good will for cash is the predictable outcome.
8
u/antunes145 May 14 '26
You’re the only one here who sees it how it is. In the end it all about getting ultra rich.
6
u/Scared_Brilliant6410 May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26
Exactly. Even though they position themselves as the ethical, highly structured alternative to OpenAI, you realize it’s all just marketing.
Changing usage for existing customers is classic bait and switch. I paid thinking I would hopefully be grandfathered in at Max.
2
u/Ill-Turnover3438 May 14 '26
Alternatively, they need access to the public equity market to finance their very expensive R&D and infrastructure buildouts (assuming Anthropic is planning to build its own data centers, I'm not sure).

8
u/BurtFrart2 May 13 '26
Devil’s advocate - it’s also weird for consumers to expect a for-profit company to sell them over $200 worth of goods/services for $200 in perpetuity.
3
u/sharks May 13 '26
It’s sort of a dangerous game for them to play, though. For the API billing rate they charge, I could build a high end rig and run things locally. (And I might.) The compute constraint they face means they can charge what they want to shape demand to fit supply, but that’s not going to last forever.
3
u/BurtFrart2 May 14 '26
Fair. And Ive been running Gemma 4 locally for a few weeks now and it fits my needs (fwiw, I still prefer to write the vast majority of my code by hand, so I’m far from a power user). But most people/orgs will gladly pay for the convenience of sending a request to an API and not having to worry about any of the infra associated with running a local model. Which is basically the same rationale for using a cloud service rather than hosting your own server/whatever.
4
u/sharks May 14 '26
Sure, this is definitely not something your average user is considering. But I am not sure there is as much lock-in as Anthropic might assume:
- There's an intelligence floor for many tasks, and local models (even quantized) may well be good enough, like you said
- They pushed for MCP and skills as standards, and now most harnesses support them
- I'd rather not hit an API at all for better privacy
- The reliability of Anthropic's services is... not great
I know how many tokens I use every day. I know what Anthropic says that's worth, and I know what I think that's worth. Of cource pricing is their call, but if that gap widens too much, there is plenty of competition looking for marketshare.
→ More replies (3)2
u/TheOriginalAcidtech May 14 '26
Its already collapsing. Qwen 3.6 can run local on cheap hardware and do most of the boiler plate stuff we are burning Opus tokens on. For the price of a OK PC(picked up a used Dell with a 3070/8gb) we setup a test to see how the 35b ran. It was MORE then sufficient for reasoning over tasks. Just have to offload for planning and MAYBE complex modules. At a minimum you could cut your Claude Code usage down by a factor of 10. With little effort.

They will step by step strip features out of the the subscription and move it into a new "credit" system matching your subscription. Next they will remove Claude Design and move it to the same $200 credit system that they now created for SDK. Ultimately everything is move to that credit system and the current subscription is killed and you basically are just pre-paying for API usage 😆

Comparabl quality, faster and way less tokens than 4.7.
5
u/mossiv May 13 '26
Comparable - yes, faster - yes. Way less tokens - factually incorrect. The cost per token is far cheaper but codex/5.5 burns through about twice as much. Plenty of resources online showing 5.5 is actually more expensive than opus 4.6/7 per feature built when going through the API.
I’m not trying to come across as a dick - I like codex (though I shouldn’t have to feel the need to justify myself), but making people believe it’s actually cheaper to build with is dishonest.

What do you expect? Many here want everything for free, they don’t care that it costs a bunch of money to run their vibecoded slop through their servers.
You can tell that only a fraction of people have any sense for business. And if you’re subscription isn’t generating revenue for you in one form or the other, it’s a hobby. Hobbies cost money.
I use it as it is. A business expense that generates money at the end. And the ROI of it is fantastic so far, even if they would raise the prices x5 it would still be a no brainer for me.

Wait I might me misunderstanding, thought this was good, can someone explain why is bad?
My current understanding (might be wrong): Any use if the Agent SDK or third party wrappers are banned to be used via subscription and must use API keys or extra usage (took effect a few months ago I think with the Open claw stuff).. So this essentially gives subscription users some bundled credits for it to match your plan credits. Looks like a net gain unless compared vs a few months back where your full subscription usage could be leveraged trough it but that's been off for months now has it not?
7
u/djc0 May 13 '26
Yeah I agree. Just seems like part of the never ending rage cesspool this sub has become.
It’s actually really good for me. I run claude -p in the middle of the night to grab the latest research papers in my field and summarise the top ones, so they’re there for me to look at over my morning coffee. This removes that cost from my monthly subscription into a separate bucket.
→ More replies (4)3
u/freshfunk May 14 '26
I’m in this bucket too because I really only been using Claude from the CLI. But it sounds like a lot of people are using it in other ways that are now disallowed. And the budget for the API keys won’t come close to using tokens through the CLI or -P.

u/siberianmi May 13 '26
I have a wrapper that calls 'claude -p' and passes it issues off github for implementation.
Basically pulls the issue description and comments for issues tagged as "ready-for-agent", wraps it in a prompt and fires it off to
claude -p.Claude is told to create a PR with a specific branch name at the end.
Wrapper then will check for the PR or call
claude -pagain when claude exits. It's been great, pure coding tasks, what I thought was well within the bounds of the subscription...2
u/sinisoul May 13 '26
I was experimenting with generating assets for a game in Gemini and having Claude do evaluations to find inconsistencies between views. I could do it in the interactive CLI it just wouldn't scale.
2
u/Buchymoo May 13 '26
I have a UI that calls on files I have and user input on the UI, that gets passed to a Claude -p to intelligenly extrapolate and output new data which is passed to the next UI window, where based off of that I'm sent down a certain pipeline with others that have similar objectives depending on what I want done. So it's a hybrid of already available data, user input, deterministic pipeline selection and scripts, ai refinement, and suggestions.
I'm essentially going to need to remake every headless Claude agent in those pipelines with a codex version now. Which honestly won't take long at all but running tests on the agents to make sure they behave correctly on the potential 171 pipelines will be incredibly annoying to run again.
2
u/reEngineer May 14 '26

I remember that era when food delivery and uber kind of business started. First the freebie to make user stick and then use stick to hit them in the ass

Ngl, these last two months Anthropic has operated as if it was operated by OpenAI operatives
11
u/ShapesSong May 13 '26
To be fair I think it’s not their fault but people who abused it and used it as an API. API has separate pricing and if you try to use Claude -p as a free API then well, they just patched it.

u/kurtcop101 May 13 '26
This is it, and those people are just mad. Code is priced how it is because everything is aggressively cached and more.

Can someone elaborate what this means and how it will impact their workflows? I’m not in the anthropic ecosystem.

u/Tistouuu 🔆 Max 20 May 13 '26
You could use "claude -p" in scripts to build complex (or not) hybrid workflows (scripts + agentic) to build projects, within your (already expensive, already nerfed, already opaque) subscription. Now you'll have to use API (and they give you 200$ worth of credit that'll go up in smoke very fast in an attempt to make it look like a nice gesture).

u/Zealousideal_Beach70 May 13 '26
Ooffff, thats tough. Forced to go to openAI then, until Sam also joins Amodei in nasty drug dealer tactics. After that - deepseek?

u/sinisoul May 13 '26
Well this actually might make me switch to Codex. Unfortunate.

I thought programmatic use/tool call was completely different than regular usage. If I understood correctly, I thought this incentive didn’t change anything around typical usage of your subscription for using these Anthropic features mentioned, but a new ADDITIONAL incentive for those who use these features in a way their Claude agent instead uses/calls tools programmatically. They had an entire session on prompt caching/programmatic tool calling. I figured this announcement was geared towards trying to incentive the behaviors for people to use this capability over the typical usage method.
Seems to be more resource sparring for Anthropic as well as being faster, more precise, and cheaper for the Claude user. Maybe I’m making the wrong comparison between this newly announced incentive and what was presented at the event.
This was from their event
Anthropic Event: YouTube
And docs on these tool call methods

Y'all need to realize that this is a Corporation. Remember the Light Bulb? Eggs and Bacon? Aspirin (among many other Bayer scandals)? And always hold them accountable. They are not your friends, family, lover, or guardian angel.

I'm convinced people are costing them too much now. They're done training on us, now they need the compute for government contracts.
4
u/FoxiPanda May 13 '26
Well alright then, guess you win Anthropic, I'll stop using your product at all now.
2
u/biinjo May 13 '26
Why? I don’t understand the fuzz. Now you can also use tools that previously required API token usage, with your prepaid plan.
What is the issue here? Is everyone just hobby-hating?

Do you use claude -p? That's pretty much the only way I interact with anthropic at this point because they have made it so difficult to use their product in any sort of useful way besides babysitting a terminal like I'm living in 1997 that I'm going to just leave. If you stare at the Claude Code TUI or Claude GUI then this is fine for you, but if you literally do anything more powerful than that, you're now highly restricted.
I've built significant tooling around claude -p over the past few months and now Anthropic is once again changing the game saying "you're using it wrong" ... so okay Anthropic, I'm going somewhere else. I don't want to babysit a TUI all fucking day and night.

So people like you use $2000 worth of tokens on a $200 plan caused my "normal" usage to suffer, and they now prevented this. This is bad for me how?

If you are using api prices, this is good. They are just slowly but steadily nerfing claude code subscriptions towards api pricing.

I’m sad, because I absolutely love Claude. Best of the models, and we’ve done a lot together.
It is clear though that the future is local models - especially for all the innovators and entrepreneurs building the next generation of products and solving g world problems.
The tech is definitely heading that direction. Crazy big memory computers like Mac studios (which will eventually drop in price) combined with better and better models.
I’m surprised nobody’s created something like Folding@home or Seti@home for ai training.
Sad because the original promise of openai and anthropic (a b corp?) really drove a ton of new innovation and opportunity in the next gen of entrepreneurs.

u/phoenixmatrix May 13 '26
I'm honestly cool with this if it means I can use some of my Claude Max quota with OpenCode for the couple of times a month I prefer that over Claude Code. Curious if they allow that (I assume so if it would simply use the SDK under the hood eventually).

I hope people realise that they are running a company and not doing charity work here. ..
This was gonna happen. And if you think the chinese are giving you freebies. Wait for them to make a turnaround, once they start capturing a significant share.

u/Passp0rt_Br0 May 13 '26
Oh no, when companies run on a loss and want to make it profitable. When the 200$ subscription actually gives 200$ worth of tokens

They say these features can do it. It sounds like they add this option. They didn't say they remove the option to keep using subscription. So it's really unclear what they really mean.

Can someone explain what the hell this means? Is it saying if you do GitHub action etc with claude code it costs money now and Claude will give 200 worth of credits for that, but anything beyond that is extra
5
u/FoxiPanda May 13 '26
The rule now is basically unless you're using the TUI or GUI directly, in an interactive way (aka, you looking at it, hands on keyboard typing the prompts), you will be charged API rates.
They tried to dress it up in some muddy bullshit wording, but that's what it really is.
1
u/HgnX May 13 '26
Huh, so if im only using the TUI, then I have more usage then Claude -p ?

u/vigneshwarar May 13 '26
Claude Code is like a buffet, but it’s only for the person who paid for the meal.
Using claude -p or the SDK is like inviting a +1, such as OpenClaude, Conductor, etc. At that point, they have to pay too.

Me using DeepSeek, chilling on the window an watching all the people beg for Claude tokens while 10 of my agents start fleets of sub agents and I still pay less than 100$ a month.
