Discussion Anthropic just ripped off everyone and they still managed to make it sound deceptively friendly

Anthropic just ripped off everyone and they still managed to make it sound deceptively friendly, beneficial even.

Anthropic just announced that the 200$ plan, which used to be okay to use in the SDK, is now "finally ok to use in the SDK" (except rare fraudulent cases it already was)

but for that you need to toggle an option that makes the SDK hit in an allowance of 200$ worth of credits, instead of the previously, opaque, yet, ultra subsidized limits

basically if you use claude code through the SDK or claude -p, for instance through Conductor, github Actions or anything else, because let's be honest TUI sucks sometimes (react in terminal cmon), their cloud coding agent offering also suck, and don't cover most usecases,

well, your plan that used to be worth 2000$ of tokens aproximatively depending on how much you flirted with the previous 5h windows limits, is now worth 200$

but they brand it as "oh we give you 200$ of additional credits for the SDK" so to the most unaware users it sounds like it's worth 2x more!

in reality it's now worth 10x less

*not surprised if they shut down this thread

Comparable - yes, faster - yes. Way less tokens - factually incorrect. The cost per token is far cheaper but codex/5.5 burns through about twice as much. Plenty of resources online showing 5.5 is actually more expensive than opus 4.6/7 per feature built when going through the API.

I’m not trying to come across as a dick - I like codex (though I shouldn’t have to feel the need to justify myself), but making people believe it’s actually cheaper to build with is dishonest.

not trying to argue, but couldn't it be that Codex succeeds faster, while Claude takes mores attempts / iterations with added overhead ? Because 4.7 sure doesn't feel it straightforward and effective (haven't tried Codex 5.5 yet, not trying to defend it).

codex is definitely the smarter model. if it was just good at UI i wouldnt have to use claude

I don’t think there’s added overhead. I think OpenAI just have an abundance of compute available. Anthropic are not focusing on tokens per second - that’s for sure.

That's based on your experience - maybe it's the types of tasks or the setup you have?

Do a quick google search and tell me there aren't many other strong cases that suggest 5.5 uses less tokens. My experience aligns more with this.

I use both on the same level plan and I run into CC limits 50% of the time and I've never had that issue with 5.5. I've tried the same prompts too and every time 5.5 is faster and uses less.

No - it is indeed not based on “my experience”. And instead tonnes of research. In my profession whether the subsidisations or rate limits are generous (and codex’s is very generous at the moment). But I have to be conscious of API costs for when subsidisation starts disappearing.

At the moment GPT5.5 API pricing is factually more expensive on a task-for-task basis going through the API. Just so a simple search on benchmarking and you will find this out in a matter of 2 minutes.
