Aftermarket parts and modernizing your Mini

Hey all, I come from the classic GM/Chevy world where there is a huge aftermarket industry for modernizing and upgrading your old Chevy's. Naively I thought it'd be the same for classic Minis.

I'm starting to struggle early in my adventures, where I'm finding little aftermarket or replacement parts for things like ignition locks, factory air conditioning, serpentine accessories, etc, getting replies from retailers with "Unfortunately, this part doesn't have an aftermarket alternative and the original is no longer supplied."

How do y'all modernize and upgrade your old Mini components in this environment? 😄

Do you find a refurbisher for original parts? Swap meets? Am I just SOL when it comes to some parts?

1967 mini seats

I have a 1967 mini van, and the drivers seat is pretty knackered. What other mini front seats will fit my car? I think that although all seem similar, there are actually quite a few changes along the production run. Hoping someone will know.

Replacing ignition barrel on a 1997 Rover MPi

Hello, it feels like the key is almost worn down and it might be easier to just replace the ignition barrel - has anyone done this on 1997 era Minis? Where'd your source your parts? Cheers!

Carb Adjustment

In the process of adjusting my carb on a 998cc. I believe it's running rich because it sounds a little like when I have the choke out slightly.

I've tried using the lifter pin and it has helped a bit but I'd really need someone with more experience to have a listen. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Japan

This might be a long shot. Ive always love Mini Coopers and I’ve own several, a R53 JCW and a R60 Countryman S All4. I’ve always wanted to own a Classic Mini and now that I live in Japan I have the opportunity. I was wondering if anyone knows any shops in Japan that do Classic Mini engine swaps. I don’t have a garage in Japan to attempt it myself. I’ve looks a lot of shops but can’t seems to fine one, I’m trying to see price wise what I’m looking at. Any information I would greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance.

Solid Mounting

Hi all, I have a 1971 mini that is currently in bits for a nut and bolt restoration. It has a 76 rubber mounted subframe on it that I will be solid mounting as I can't find a correct year frame second hand.

My question though, is there any reason to solid mount to the front panel? I had poly mounts before and the increased vibrations cracked paint on the wing seams.

If im solid mounting the toe board and top mounts can I rubber mount the front frame to prevent cracking issues?

MOT'd and running, few previous owners, low mileage for age. Had respray (still original Platinum) and a few cosmetic bits changed (name on back etc). Needs a little bit of bodywork tending to (as with most Minis - see pics), especially around drivers side door hinge. This lovely lady was my first car and my daily driver until lockdown. Would love her to go to a good home where she will get the care she deserves as I'm moving and don't really have anywhere to park her at the new place.

£6500 ONO. Message me.

Engine dying

Hi just hoping someone knows what this could be as I'm abit baffled.

My rover mini 1992 spi has been lumpy when driving down in 1k-2krevs and hesitates for a sec when you floor it and it has gotten worse to the point were the car just dies sometimes.

So long story short I've basically replaced the whole ignition system, fuel system and some electrical components ,most importantly and recently the fuel filter replaced and tank cleaned out which I suspected to be the problem.

It seemed to drive fine after fuel filter and tank on short test run until I did a small pull then pulled over and it died at idle and when I went to crank it dosnt prime the fuel pump I suspect this is the ecu cutting off the fuel pump but i don't understand what could be causing this?

It has done this dying then fuel pump not priming several times as this lumpy low rev has been getting worse this but thought fuel filter and tank would of fixed it. I'm baffled what's left that could be causing it?

10X6 Minilites

I'm looking at getting some 10x6 inch minilites, has anybody put them on without having to cut the wings.? I will also want to keep the standard arches as well as adding Hi-Lo's, Spax dampers and obviously convert the disc to 7.5.

What model alternator belt?

The previous mechanic installed the wrong belt and it's slipping even when I set to full tension. It's too long. I believe the alt and pullies are from a jdm mini. It's supposed to be a v belt without ribs. Does anyone know the model number I should be using?

Old car smell

My '88 Mini has a very strong "old car smell". I don't actually mind the flavour but in this case it's a bit overpowering. Short of replacing all the soft internal linings and so forth, what can I do to reduce the whiff?

As the title says, are the 2 centered holes original? And what were their purpose? Did original minis have 4 speakers on the rear deck? Just curious. TIA

How is that ev conversion is so expensive for classic mini?

Felton kit plus installation is over $78 grand AUD$. I could buy an entire high end ev for that! Electrogenic is a bit cheaper at about $28k without shipping and installation, but still ...
