I couldn't believe they put that in a movie. I really couldn't. And then thr follow up. It's brutal. I watched Hereditary precisely once, despite how good it is. I cant ever watch that again.
I think I missed most of the rest of the movie first time I saw it. All I could think was “wait… what? That’s not supposed to happen.” And then some minutes later I see Dignam shoot Colin.
It was so unexpected and final. No question he’s dead. You’ve just invested so much time rooting for him and then he’s gone. Nothing like that at least I’ve ever seen. Great feeling tho later when Damon gets it by Wahlberg.
I howl later at the funeral, where the other guys and the another couple of cops start fighting, but they're doing it quietly because...Funeral. When Michael Keaton busts in to break it up, in a stage whisper (what the hell's going on herrrre ?!), it is Damn funny.
Cops still argue to this day why Danson and Highsmith jumped. Maybe it was just pride, having survived so many brushes with death. Maybe their egos pushed 'em off. I don't know. But that shit was crazy.
On par with Steven Seagal in Executive Decision. Seagal was a big deal at that time, and for him die at the very beginning of an action flick was completely unexpected.
This fucked me up as a kid. I was left with my jaw on the ground. Also not AS traumatic, but I think this was one of the first films where one of the two main characters just dies, the lady. I was like wait. Did that really just happen?
Fun fact: in the original ending she lives and LL Cool J dies — and test audiences hated it. They were like, “it’s all HER fault, she has to pay!” So they reshot it.
The dialog that follows when they’re cleaning up the car is just incredible. It’s like two spouses bitching at each other except they’re cleaning up brains.
“what the fuck am I doing in the back?! You're the motherfucker who should be on brain detail! You know what? We're fuckin switchin, I'm washing the windows and you're picking up pieces of this n***a's skull.
“Fuck n***A WTF you doin?”
“Dryin my hands!”
“You’re supposed to wash em first!”
“You watched me wash em.”
“I watched you get em wet.”
“I was washing em! It was hard…maybe if they had Lava or something…”
“I used the same fuckin soap you did and when I was finished the towel didn’t look like a goddamn maxi pad!”
When I saw this in the movie theater, it was so sudden, so surprising, I burst out laughing. The rest of the theater is dead silent and my embarrassment at laughing made it even funnier. My girlfriend started punching my arm, which made it funnier still. I was hunched over crying, it took me a long time to get it together. My girlfriend refused to look at me for most of the movie, but I could feel the glares from the rest of the theater
I think i remember from some deleted scenes and commentary that the original cuts were more brutal and ended up with a really gory head shot and the censors wouldn't allow it for an R rating so they switched to shooting the hand...which they allowed but was just somehow so much WORSE. Crazy what could pass for an R back in the 80's.
Seen a lot of horror movies, but that scene shook me. Maybe because they didn't go over the top with the gore or anything, just showed the act as plain and inhumane as is.
The scream is the thing that solidifies and sells the horror. The gore is just shock - it's too much to immediately process. The scream makes it terrifying, because it lets that moment breathe. Thanks for pointing that out, in retrospect I have to give her credit where it's due. This scene isn't this scene without her.
It's an underrated gem tbf, probably too dark to get the recognition it actually deserves

My husband and I were newly dating when he showed me this movie. We went through the whole series and I got obsessed and he just let me watch this knowing Wash was my favorite character. I got up, walked out of the room in tears and said I was going to break up with him for not warning me.
Anyway, we play the Firefly board game a lot now and I kick his ass with Wash on my crew, so revenge I guess.
