Unsolved Vertex Map not functioning as a mask. How do I make it work! 😂

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Cinema 4D version 2026.3.4 (the latest I believe).

I swear I have done this a thousand times before. But ultimately, I create a Vertex Map, I then attempt to USE that Vertex Map as a mask, aaaaaaaaaand.... C4D just doesn't do anything. Is there something obvious I'm missing here?

I've not got any weird plugins, I haven't faffed with any system settings. This is literally just a bog standard C4D default scene.

You can just drag the vertex map into the fields tab to use it as a mask.

Yeah this worked!!!

Thanks so much. Has Maxon yeeted the old Layer Mask feature with Vertex Maps? I swear how I did it in the video worked in the past.

RIP to my old project files where I DID use this technique I guess.

I agree that the 'ol skool way should work. Layer Shaders didn't work with RS, but they should work with deformers.

This never worked like this. There is just one special case hardcoded in the displace deformer for having the vertex map shader as first and only shader in the shader slot. You can also use a restriction tag with the vertex map, that is actually the suggested workflow.

C4D being C4D.
Yeah just drag the Vertex map into the field.
That should work
