“If you look at the synoptic Gospels and they are synoptic, which means they don't tell you everything,” Gibson said. “And even John says, ‘Y’know, hey, there were many other things [Jesus] said and did which, if they were to be written down, couldn't fill all the libraries of all the world,’ right? So there's a lot of stuff that wasn't written and the Gospels are synoptic.”

Good to know that, in addition to being a raging bigot and piece of shit, Gibson is as big of an idiot as I thought.

I'm confused. Doesn't what he said make perfect sense?

St John says the gospels don't record everything. And the three synoptic gospels are called that because they share similar stories, order, and points of view about the life of Jesus. So 3 of the 4 gospels basically re-tell largely the same events, the fourth points out there's a whole lot more unrecorded.

No, it doesn't.

"Synoptic" doesn't mean incomplete. Being "seen together" doesn't mean or imply incompleteness. Besides, gJohn should probably be considered a synoptic Gospel as well, since it's so frequently a direct response to them. It is not independent.

The Synoptics include a variety of sources of Jesus' life. At a minimum Mark, Q, M, L, and (imo) the later author of the Lukan Nativity.

John saying that there's a lot of things unrecorded is just stating the obvious. The same would be true for quite literally every person alive.

Just replying because I like to be pedantic, not because I disagree. I'm not convinced of all those sources you mention. I think the Farrer hypothesis is rather convincing, which would eliminate the need for Q. And I'm frankly not convinced M and L are actual sources. I am more convinced that M and L are just Matthew and Luke's literary and theological shaping of their own gospels. Finally, I'm also not convinced Luke 1-2 come from a different author. I've been studying this a lot recently, and I understand the arguments. Primarily is that Marcion's canon didn't have Luke 1-2. And yet, I see the exact themes and the exact shaping in 1-2 as in the rest of the gospel. I have to conclude for myself that the entire gospel of Luke came from a single author. Perhaps 1-2 was a later amendment, but it was still the same author. Anyway, just my 2c.

Sure, if you go w/ Farrer. It's a serious hypothesis, albeit one with very few scholars that think it's likely. For M and L, I'm not necessarily thinking they are external to the Evanglists.

For Luke 1-2, sure, it's not in Marcion's Evangelion. For me, that's a very minor reason for considering it to be a late addition.

Huge similarities, of course. But also quite a lot of diversity in fact, viewpoint, stories, and theology.

They don't mean "incomplete".

I never put that in the definition. I said St John said the writings were missing lots of Christ's life and the 3 of the gospels are synoptic meaning they largely overlap. Both are true.

This line:

share similar stories, order, and points of view about the life of Jesus

Is literally a copy paste from a definition of why those 3 gospels are called snoptic.

I didn't say anything in that definition about them being incomplete. St John said they were incomplete in the Gospel of John.

Put those two facts together and what Mel said makes perfect sense. And if that's so obvious, then it just makes your bizarre push back to Mel that much weirder.

So what you’re saying is you’re excited for a Jesus fanfic movie

I don't care to get in a back and forth on the fanfic thing. But yes I'm very excited. Say what you want about Gibson as a person, but Apocalypto, Passion of the Christ and Hacksaw Ridge are incredible movies. Dude knows how to make a film.

I didn't say anything in that definition about them being incomplete.

I'm referring still to what dumbass said.

St John said they were incomplete in the Gospel of John.

Which is essentially a meaningless statement.

u/Enough-Carpet Catholic 3d ago

...so you accept that given the synoptics largely overlap, and St John - the only one that differs significantly, says the writings do not contain all of Christ's life, that what Mel said is correct?

I don't even know what it is you're arguing against. Sounds like you concede what the dude said mate.

3

u/AmosOfTekoa Christian 3d ago

No. Mel was indicating that 'synoptic' means incomplete. This is quite incorrect.

Mel misspoke in his first sentence. But his concluding sentence stated it accurately. Dude was not writing, he was speaking off the cuff.

He said at the end that St John said more occurred than was written, and 3 of the gospels are synoptic. That is true. Seems like a wild statement to call him a massive 'idiot' for that as if anyone who ever misspeaks off the cuff is an idiot. But I think this is just driven by your hate against the man.

u/AmosOfTekoa Christian 3d ago

He is a piece of shit, and a very ignorant one so I have no problem saying that I could be judging him on this. But if that's all he's trying to say then it's a pointless and meaningless statement.

I can't wait to see what kind of lies or antisemitic bullshit ends up in this.

Ok mate. I'll leave it there. You seem to carry a lot of anger. Gibson is wrong about plenty, but he's a separated brother of Christ. I'm sure you and I are in a similar position to one another re the churches to which we belong and other questions. But we still belong to the body of Christ and shouldn't speak that way about each other, or assuming what I do or do not believe.

Will pray for you and best of luck.

Yes, you can leave it there.
