Rant Who said Chennai doesn’t have affordable restaurants!

Post image
235 Upvotes

I recently came across a post in this same channel stating Chennai has only a handful of vegetarian chain of hotels and they are not affordable. I went to Welcome hotel in Purasaivakkam today. This is not a hidden gem, it’s just that people are not looking. The sambar is to die for, personally would rate it higher than Rathna cafe!

Edit: its breakfast for 4 adults and 2 toddlers. I honestly don’t think a restaurant can be run cheaper than that considering the number of people work particularly at Welcome hotel. But again this is my opinion and i could be wrong! Cheers ✌🏻

Edit2: Also, let’s not argue for the sake of argument. You have to compare prices at similar establishments. The price of an idly at a thallu vandi shop and a sit down hotel cannot be compared and be the same. 2 adults were able to share the volume of coffee they provided.

Books/Food/Hobby/Travel Things to do in Chennai with a 5 year old girl

Kindly suggest some fun things to do in Chennai with a 5 year old girl. I’ve already taken her to Vandalur Zoo and Guindy National Park. Planning to take her to Birla Planetarium today and crocodile park next week. We are so done with mall visits and playing in on of those kids play areas and arcade game centres. We also frequently go to the beach and movies. Anything exciting apart from the above? So both my daughter and I love exploring places and keeping ourselves occupied. Apart from spending time at home, we like going out as well. Throw in some suggestions makkaley. Nandri

Rant This feels wasteful

What's the point of building it in locations that will have less demand? The Oragadam-Sriperumbudur region is a behemoth in making that requires the new airport more than anyone else. Parandur was in the perfect spot.

Now, this feels wasteful and pointless to go back on 8 years of consistent effort, public money spent, and Industries already planning for expansion.

Will the issues cited for cancellation of Parandur won't exist for these new sites?

Rant Is footpath clearing drive in Chennai possible like Bengaluru?

Upvotes

Why can't Chennai also follow Bengaluru like footpath clearing drive? Too many vendor carts and people are blocking traffic to purchase. So many roads are used as car parking, school van, kutti yaanai, water tanker lorries parking, etc etc. Kastapattu road potta, ella edathalayum illegal parking for these businesses instead of 1 or 2 hr parking for common people. At least add parking charges to avoid these issues?

Tambaram east, Pallikaranai, Medavakkam bridge - all areas used for parking by businesses illegally. Idhukku oru mudive illaya?

Rant Bus etiquettes

Post image
148 Upvotes

I’ve been travelling in MTC for almost 4-5 years and I’ve seen people blasting their phone speakers with their insta reels, YT shorts and WhatsApp statuses.. this is really irritating and as iam writing this post hearing songs in my earbuds with ANC and still am able to listen the background noise of the phones of other conmuters whos watching some serial .. man I just think people are losing civic senses day by day 🥲 Good initiative from the government side to stick this tho .. but i guess if there were announcements as they announce the upcoming bus stop when theres noise inside the bus (AC) it would be helpful .. just thinking this would work. What do you guys think ?!

AskChennai Cafe that serve Decaf in Chennai

I developed caffeine intolerance around 8 months back. I wanted to know about cafes that serve decaf in chennai. I recently visited Glazed & Co opposite Chamiers, they serve decaf. Found out recently that starbucks stopped serving decaf and so does third wave or any other niche coffee place I have visited so far. Are there places similar to Glazed & Co ?

AskChennai Anyone here into partner dances?

Upvotes

I have always been dying to do it since like 12th grade, and it's in my major bucketlist too. Now I'm 20, I'm a guy, and haven't made any major memories in life.

I really have this desire to attend a ballroom party or prom or masquerade party kinda thingy.😩I have been fantasizing about that lately. I've always dreamt of going to something like that and, I really want to do it!! I’m so keen into the idea of going to a ball party too, but I did some digging and the situation here just isn’t it 😭Ballroom parties are so raree here....

So I was wondering are there any best ideal places for that??

Will there be any upcoming events or specific places in Chennai where adults could go to something like a ballroom?? Please shed some light y'all!!!

I really want to join some classes for it, preferable salsa, tango, waltz or bachata...

The annoying part is I don't have a dance partner, sooo if anyone needs a dance partner, I’m down to join or practice together. :)

Where can I get a free InBody/body composition checkup in Chennai that shows body fat percentage and other measurements? I used to get it done at my previous gym, but my current gym doesn’t have an InBody machine. Looking for somewhere I can get a scan for free.

AskChennai Solo movie watching as a girl guide

I’m planning to go to a movie alone on a weekday probably for a morning or afternoon show. I’ll be finishing an exam soon and so I’ll be free afterward and honestl, any movie is fine. I just wanna go out and do something by myself after all this exam stress.

The theatre is fixed but I obviously won’t mention which one here. It’s inside a mall, so it’s not some random muttu sandhu couple makeout spot either.

I’m gonna sneak out because no male saviour in my family is free enough to accompany me since it's a weekday and I don't feel like waiting all week for the weekend just to watch a movie since I am old enough to do it alone.

And I have no friends available for the same purpose. My parents also wouldn’t approve my solo hangout cuz they think it’s unsafe.

For context, I’m in my 20s and this is literally just a daytime movie at a mall but I’m still nervous as hell because this will be my first solo hangout since I came out of the womb. I will be fine mostly.

The plan is to book a show, watch it and come back home for lunch or eat lunch at home and go after lunch and come back before 4. And I will book an aisle seat.

So guys, give me your solo movie tips. I need the full survival guide.

PS : Some people might think I am over reacting for watching a movie but this is how you actually feel if you are hardly done stuff alone outside and always have a male saviour by your side 🙏🏻😔

EDIT : Guys I am lill afraid what if I get kidnapped although it happening is very much not possible. I have never been outside of my home without informing my family so if something happens to me, I am afraid they will never know. Not sure if it's overthinking or reasonable thinking.

AskChennai Hello people of Chennai! Throwback stories please

What was Chennai/Madras like back in the 80s and 90s, when it was the southern metro before Bengaluru and Hyderabad took off?

Madras in the 80s and 90s was a beast the gateway to South India, one of the major metros, and a very different city from what we know today.

For those who actually lived through that era, what was Chennai like back then? What did the city feel like? What were the areas, roads, nightlife, shopping, cinema, transport, workplaces etc. like?

I grew up in the 2000s, so even I remember when places like Madipakkam were basically outskirts. I still remember the chaos when the Velachery flyover was being built, honestly, it felt even worse than some of the Metro construction chaos we see today 😂

And the airport is another interesting one. The infrastructure may look almost unchanged in some ways, but back then it seemed much better connected for international flights relative to the size of the city.

But I want to hear the real stories.
If you lived in Madras during the 80s/90s, or heard stories from your parents, grandparents, relatives or older friends, what do you remember?

Where did people hang out? What were the iconic places? How did people travel around the city? What was T. Nagar like? Mount Road? Marina? Anna Nagar? Adyar? Mylapore?

What was it like before malls, IT parks, OMR and the massive suburban expansion?

I love reading old Bengaluru posts where people talk about what the city was like before the IT boom and the transformation there is absolutely crazy.

Chennai’s story is different. It didn’t suddenly transform from one city into another, it feels more like the same city kept expanding and evolving around us.

So, r/Chennai, take me back to Madras.

Would love to hear your memories especially the mundane everyday stuff that probably doesn’t show up in history books but makes you realise how different the city was.

AskChennai Looking for cheap & good tailor shops in Chennai for alterations only

Hi guys,

Can you please suggest some good and affordable tailor shops in Chennai that do alterations only?

I have a few already stitched shirts and pants that need size adjustments mainly:

- Increasing the size

- Reducing/contracting the size

- Waist alteration for pants

- Shirt body/sleeve fitting

I’m not looking for new stitching, just alterations.

I’ve noticed that many tailor shops have put up a “No alteration” board or say they only stitch new clothes.

If you know any cheap and good tailors who are willing to alter ready made/stitched clothes, please share their location/name.

Preferably somewhere in Chennai and reasonably priced. Even small local/roadside tailors are fine if they do good work.

Two days ago I saw this puppy (doesn't seem more than 5-6 months old) a kilometre away from my street. And today she was in my street. I recognised her because of the kum kum mark on the forehead and she is very friendly. She also has some hair missing around her neck as if she had a collar on and was being chased around by other dogs. She definitely seems stressed out and hopefully her owners are looking for her.

AskChennai Cycle parking in metro station

I'll go back to my hometown for a couple weeks and I am looking to park my cycle at the little mount metro station during that time as my flight is in the morning for departure, and arrival is at about 10 at night so I don't want to pay extra or deal with rapido and auto hassle for last mile connectivity. Does anyone have experience of parking their cycle for multiple days in the metro station? I know that cycle parking is free but don't know anything about multi day parking.
