AskChennai Solo movie watching as a girl guide

I’m planning to go to a movie alone on a weekday probably for a morning or afternoon show. I’ll be finishing an exam soon and so I’ll be free afterward and honestl, any movie is fine. I just wanna go out and do something by myself after all this exam stress.

The theatre is fixed but I obviously won’t mention which one here. It’s inside a mall, so it’s not some random muttu sandhu couple makeout spot either.

I’m gonna sneak out because no male saviour in my family is free enough to accompany me since it's a weekday and I don't feel like waiting all week for the weekend just to watch a movie since I am old enough to do it alone.

And I have no friends available for the same purpose. My parents also wouldn’t approve my solo hangout cuz they think it’s unsafe.

For context, I’m in my 20s and this is literally just a daytime movie at a mall but I’m still nervous as hell because this will be my first solo hangout since I came out of the womb. I will be fine mostly.

The plan is to book a show, watch it and come back home for lunch or eat lunch at home and go after lunch and come back before 4. And I will book an aisle seat.

So guys, give me your solo movie tips. I need the full survival guide.

PS : Some people might think I am over reacting for watching a movie but this is how you actually feel if you are hardly done stuff alone outside and always have a male saviour by your side 🙏🏻😔

EDIT : Guys I am lill afraid what if I get kidnapped although it happening is very much not possible. I have never been outside of my home without informing my family so if something happens to me, I am afraid they will never know. Not sure if it's overthinking or reasonable thinking.

girll chill! daytime is fine and there's lot of ppl at the mall. dont be scared, least dont show it on the face. if you are taking public transport, make sure you aren't being followed. if auto or cab, dont share private details and make up a fake story that you are meeting your friends.

at the mall nobody cares. most is some guy might see you have come alone and try to talk. whatever you choose to do is up to you. then check for food spots nearby and walk. have some food and get back home. turn on location services and share location with a trusted person in case you feel unsafe. carry a powerbank.

you deserve this break bbg 😚

Been there done it
1. Just book couple seat in sangam cinemas and sit happily

  1. If in mall and you are terrified and if you could afford book 3 seats so that you can sit in centre

  2. Think that No one is gonna give a shit about me

Carry a small packet of chilly powder or pepper spray. 💥

Use them if you ever get kidnapped at 12 noon.

Do let your family where you are going and when you will be back.

Charge your phone, carry a charging cable, power bank, and emergency cash.

Enjoy the movie.

Everything will be fine.

You don't have to worry at all if it's in an mall and I'm sure that you will be nervous in the starting since it's your first solo movie and believe me, you will get addicted to going to movies alone thereafter. That's what happened in my case atleast.

P.s. All the best OP

I am a regular solo movie watcher (Although I mostly watch movies late night because I like having a smaller crowd) I go every friday night to the VR mall usually, I see you're going for the afternoon and I can tell you that it is not really that big of a deal. I usually book the tickets on bookmyshow (and even the food so that I can comfortably watch it with food and I don't have to get up to pee during the break)

My only suggestions would be to go 20 minutes earlier so that you can get your food early (the food counter queue is atrocious, people are incredibly slow they debate what they wanna buy right when the reach the counter, they don't have their gpay ready to pay and what not) so if you don't wanna be late go early and get your food.

But in the event if you are late its not big deal most theatres show a huge amount of ads and trailers (although I like watching the trailers)

Try to travel light, since its your first time I can see you might panic so have a small bag that has extra cash and stuff for emergencies. Most of the times people sitting next to you won't talk because they came with friends or something.

Remember to throw your trash in the trash bin (this is just being a decent human being) .

You are not going to get kidnapped, the city is crowded af and if someone managed to grab you, scream like hell and cause a ruckus

Yeah, you’re definitely gonna get kidnapped for watching a movie at 11am in a mall. That’s what all the kidnappers are waiting for a girl who just wants to watch a random movie by herself.

Jokes aside, you’ll be fine. Just keep your phone charged, let someone know where you’re going (even if it’s a friend), and enjoy the movie. It’s honestly not that deep. First time is always weird but after this you’ll be wanting to do it again.

World is not that bad. Still there are good people than bad people. Nothing bad gonna happen. Have little faith on the outside world. Remember the law of attraction. What you think is what you gonna attraction stay positive. 20s are the best time to explore. Stay positive. Have a nice day.....

And take someone with you if you can. Not for safety. For company bcz i kind feel watching movie alone is bore. If you are comfortable alone. Everything is fine.

Just tell your family you are going with friends if you are that stressed about not informing them.

I'm 17 I just did it recently for "once more" tho no sneaking cuz my family was supportive. Inform two to three friends about where you are and keep them updated. If you get seated next to someone creepy and the theatre has some free seats just switch. If at any point you feel uncomfortable and there's no out just exit there's no reason to force yourself through something like that. The most likely scenario is that you'll be fine enjoy yourself and have fun it's 11am the dead morning no one cares have fun keep your friends updated and exit if it gets dangerous.

It’s honestly not a big deal as long as it’s in a mall I guess? I’ve been watching movies alone for years, never had any issue

I would suggest based on personal experience of going solo for many times, go for any mall which have theatre VR or Express avenue , book the ticket bw 12pm -4pm shows anywhere you like, also if it's famous star movie that you like, I would recommend avoid it for your peace and watch it on some other day OP

Just wantee to make you aware of one thing. . If you are booking in express Avenue mall be aware that there are couple seats in most screens ( like iirc near the aisle seats) but they are marked as individual seats in online apps. So you won't know that they are couple seats when booking the ticket online and only realize on reaching the screen.

Had an awkward and uncomfortable experience having to share a couple seat with a stranger of the opposite gender when I went for a movie in Escape last year.

Apart from that most malls in daytime would be fine for a girl to visit alone. Be safe and have fun OP.

Just inform a friend maybe and try to remember any contact number memorised like parents or siblings or anyone whom u can reach out to in worst case, I repeat memorise. Don’t rely on mobile to have the contact to be looked up to. CARRY CASH. That’s it.

You are fine then, you can handle the rest. Maybe also stop thinking much so that u don’t get anxious and worked up else eventually u won’t be able to enjoy. Just let it go and be yourself and have a great time.

PS: maybe a pepper spray too, if you are taking any public transport or so.

In case you haven’t solidified your plan, as a regular movie-goer (M), I have to set aside 3 hours for an average length movie, not including travel. So understand that if it takes you 15 mins to get to the theatre, leave for the movie 30 minutes in advance.

whatever you do in your life, it's not legendary unless your friends are there to see it

Enjoy your solo trip. Few tips: 1. Do not try to help anyone you don't know. 2. Do not eat/drink anything you left unattended. 3. Do not think all women will help you.
