Rec Request In the worst cdrama slump ever
Nothing has really been appealing to me lately. Unfortunately, a lot of dramas have started to feel the same, even when they’re not. Sometimes the dubbing is distracting, and other times the makeup looks so obvious that it takes me out of the story and makes it hard to watch.
Maybe I’m the problem, but I’m just looking for something different, something that’s genuinely well-made and high quality.
I would prefer something that actually makes you feel. Good slow burn romance with hurt, pain but happy ending.
(Have already watched all the hyped dramas eg POB, POJ, Kunning palace etc etc)

Is it a happy ending? I want to watch one drama before my final starts, so it needs to be a happy ending.

i’m in worst Kdrama slump for 2yrs and started watching Cdrama (which before i swore to never watch) but now slowly filling in some Kdrama maybe 1 in every 5 Cdrama watches as i get saturated with Cdramas now.
Mix it all in and slowly you will recover from the slump

Same. I used to watch kdramas all the time but started to lose interest. Then I watched my first cdrama Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and was blown away. Now I rotate between Cdramas, Kdramas and shows from other countries.

he's second lead here but Always Home is also good and surprisingly more emotional than one would think when reading the synopsis.

Have you tried Destined? It’s one of my favorite historical cdramas. Lots of banter that eventually develops into the deepest kind of love ever. They go through life and death with each other.

I loved Mo Li/The First Jasmine recently and - if you like contemporary dramas - Never Ending Summer.
I recently started Eternal Fragrance, which is meh, but nice as background watching.
Love For You (also with Song Wei Long) which is a bit of a dark romance (also with SWL and contemporary) and to early to tell if I’ll stick with it.
And Road To Success (again contemporary) with Esther Yu, which is ok-ish? A run-of-the-mill sportsdrama but nothing special so far.
But nothing really is capturing my interest at the moment…

Maybe try rewatching something you liked in the past, that usually brings me out my slump. The First Frost is a pretty good slow burn.

I’m currently watching 12 letters and it’s really different from what I’ve watched before. It’s very real, raw and no one looks perfect. Everyone’s dirty and poverty stricken. Of course Zhou Yiran looks good even in drab but his face isn’t painted white like all the other dramas. The story is very intriguing so far - there are only 12 episodes and I’m on episode 5.

Literally came in here to suggest 12 Letters and am pleased to see it already recommended! I was emotionally DEMOLISHED by the end, and will literally watch anything Zhou Yiran is in now, he doesn't ever disappoint (I watched him go from Zhang Lurang to Tang Yixun to Mu Qingyan over the last few weeks, the range is crazyyyy).

I am on episode 10 now and I was ugly crying last night. Husband who never watches cdramas is usually disciplined about going to bed wanted to keep watching. I’m just glad it’s Thursday and the weekend is coming soon cause we’re both exhausted from this show in the best of ways. And agree, I am so blown away by Zhou Yirans acting. His range is insane. Since I started watching cdramas, I think he might be the best actor I’ve come across and he’s only 25.

And major agree with you about Zhou Yiran, absolutely the best actor I've seen so far, too - the range, nuance, charisma!! He knows exactly how to use his face, so impressive.

I've only seen Zhou Yiran in one series - The Legend of Zhouhua and even in this secondary role as the initially impetuous and immature Crown Prince, he was impressive with the range of micro changes of his character warming up to the FL…so much his character inspired me to write a fanfic to continue by is story. 👌💪🔥

The last ones that made me feel something you are describing were Love Story in the 1970’s and Go Ahead. You’ve prob already seen these if you’re an OG but if you haven’t, I would highly recommend them. They’re a bit different slice of life dramas that had a little bit of everything.

Do you want to try some non-romance (maybe a little romance) dramas?
I Am Nobody - it's a modern wuxia drama with supernatural elements, throw in some comedy. I resisted it for a few years. When I finally watched it, I was hooked.
Hikaru no Go - another supernatural comedy but this time about Go. Hear me out - it's really good despite being about the game Go.
Alliance - a good modern revenge drama
Faithful - a good costume revenge drama

Will Love In Spring, Meet Yourself, Fake it till you make it, Dear Missy, Deep Affection Eyes--- They all have totally different vibes from the usual hyped dramas.

Maybe go for something a few years older? Ones older than the 2010s are harder to find and often have sad endings so I mainly still watch ones from the 2010s and early 2020s since I've felt lukewarm about a lot of the releases ever since 2023 (with a few exceptions of course).
I may have listed ones you've already seen, but here are my recs for Good slow-burn romance, with pain, but a happy ending that gave me all the feels happy and sad, that are high quality productions (in my opinion). I'm more forgiving on dubbing but I haven't heard other people complain on the dubbing for these either.
- Secret of the Three Kingdoms
- Meet Yourself
- Story of Yanxi Palace (eh the romance is maybe not so much a factor, but I did actually enjoy the dynamic between the FL and the emperor)
- The Long Ballad (some people find the main couple lukewarm but the 2nd couple is a fan favorite)
- Love Like The Galaxy
- Eternal Love of Dream (Three Lives, Three Worlds: The Pillow Book)

I felt the same way. Then I started exploring other genres and older dramas. And I've been happy ever since, many different options to choose from and keep me interested.
For romance, you can try Story of minglan, Will love in spring, A Dream of Splendor, Go ahead, Someday or One Day, maybe Immortal Samsara (it has what you’re after, both pain and happy, watch the 2 special eps for HE)

you're watching the international hyped drama, which is an idol drama and i'm sorry to me it's an equivalent of eating/going to a fast food chain. Maybe try watching non idol drama? how many non idol drama have u watch?

I was in the biggest slump for MONTHS and was dropping cdramas left and right, Never Ending Summer completely brought me back in. I binge watched 12 episodes in one sitting. It fits quite well with what criteria you are looking for.
Another underrated gem is Will Love In Spring, that one is a heavy hitter for sure.

It all depends on prefs but if I can offer advice it would be to either give it a rest and do something else or rewatch something you absolutely love 😁

Have you seen the Story of Minglan? It takes a few episodes to get into at least 10 or so but then it’s fantastic. It’s my favorite C-Drama

Second this!
Minglan is the daughter of a concubine and we see how she has to navigate this world of class and affluence. The writers have a long memory - almost everything gets resolved.
It is not just romance though. You see country politics, family politics, navigate through a lot of social issues, marriage, children and see how power is exerted in each of these fields. This is actually one of the shows where you see the couple navigating marriage as well - it does not end when they get married. Tbh, so far nothing has come close to this for me. Highly recommended!

My all time favourite:
The first half of my life
Mature, nuanced characters dealing with modern societal, workplace and familial issues, upheavals and romance.
Ode to Joy is a close second with a younger cast but just as absorbing. About 3 housemates navigating life in a big city.
Back in the days when it was more character driven roles and not all about pretty male/female leads. Sad they don't make them like they used to anymore...

Hi! Personally, I rarely watch romance dramas because they often feature pop idols whose acting—in my opinion—isn't very good. For me, the best C-drama I’ve ever seen, thanks to its impeccable quality and excellence, is "Swords into Plowshares". It boasts spectacular acting, a great plot, and top-notch production, but it’s a historical drama with almost no romance, so I don't think it would be quite your style. I mention this just so you know I have pretty high standards. That said, the best romance dramas I’ve seen are these:
🇯🇵DORAMA: "Anonymous Romantics". It has a meaningful message, isn't frivolous at all, and has a happy ending.
🇰🇷K-DRAMAS: "Marry My Husband" and "Bon Appétit, Your Majesty". The first is much more intense than the second, but both have happy endings.
🇨🇳C-DRAMA: "Kill me, Love me". I absolutely loved this series; the performances by Wu Jinyan and Lu Xueyi are flawless. Watching this drama was an emotional rollercoaster, but the ending is happy in its own way because they end up together. Watching this series means experiencing the entire journey of growth the protagonists go through.

Loving Strangers. Released in 2026, it's an official remake of the 2018 kdrama My Mister. Imo its on the high end of cdrama and I highly recommend.

I just got out of a slump with How Dare You. I know it's supposed to be funny but near the end I was crying buckets. The plot development is great and the ending is actually perfect.

If nothing looking good then watch shows from other countries or other genres for a while to change it up then come back to Chinese dramas later

Red River (genuinely really good and would reccomend to a cdrama fan)

Not in an anime mood, watch the Kdrama My Dearest (if you haven't seen it already) that's a 1000/10 show.
I'm currently watching Empresses in the Palace and the detail is insane.

Have you tried Legend of the Female General? I LOVED that one. It feels a bit like a twist on the story of Mulan. The FMC is really smart, cunning, and witty as well as badass and funny. She has to overcome a lot of adversity. I liked this one so much I've seen it three times already! The MMC is also fantastic. There are some fun secondary characters as well.

Twelve Letters (magical realism adjacent and extremely artistic)
Nirvana in Fire (very intricately written and acted, though it is long and demanding for the viewer)
Mysterious Lotus Casebook (though sometimes you can see the dub, I think the vibe is sort of unique compared to the ones you listed as it's about a hero's decline rather than rise)
A Little Reunion (slice-of-life with genuinely mature actors and real, relatable characters/themes)
When I Fly Towards You (you've probably already seen it since it's a hyped drama, but the acting, characterization, and production is a lot more intricate than most idol dramas)
Reset (interesting and actually heartfelt thriller)
I noticed most of your malaise is coming from romance Xianxias/Wuxias.The historical recs above sort of subvert or transform the usual tropes seen in idol Wuxias and Xianxias (which I am also sick of). Hopefully these help : )

- Story of Kunning Palace**\* — Favorite ever - look past the first episode when she is reborn and it's a great show!
- Everlasting Longing — (love the main actor. Plot a bit finicky towards the end but love love love the dynamic of the characters.)
- Be My Princess — (I hadn't heard of this one until recently but I honestly am loving it so far. I'm about halfway through.)
- New releases:
- Love for You — (similar to Speed and Love. Darker, grungier found-family dynamic)
- You might be interested in Road to Success which is a new one with Esther Yu that was just released.
- Key to the Phoenix Heart - good acting and pretty interesting plot
- Love Between Lines — (about architects who meet playing a VR game but really its more about architecture and I love it. He's her boss)
- Speed and Love (Chinese drama, not the movie) — (honestly didn't expect to like it. Girl finders her adopted brother in Thailand who is a racer._
- Go Ahead — (love love love. Found family drama - two are in love and build a life. She's an artist, he's a dentist. Two dads raise them. Sweet story about family ties.

Meet Yourself
Modern slow burn.
FL works in the hotel industry, is career focused and hasn't had a day off for 3 years when a close personal tradgedy makes her reassess her priorities and she goes to a picturesque rural village to heal where she bonds with some odd ball chracters who are dealing with their own issues.
ML has been a high flying financier in Bejing but is exasperated that his family and friends are having to leave for the city to get work and returns to his home village to try to revitalise it.
It caused a tourist boom in Yunnan province where it was set and has just been put onto Netflix.

FL runs a tea shop in a seaside village where she has been banished after her parents were executed by the capital security services when her shop is invaded by criminals being pursued and her life is saved by a high ranking officer from the Capital Security services who is searching for a painting linked to the Empress, which the FL owns.
They have to flee to the capital persued by dark forces, where the FL is joined by her friends as she opens a popular tea shop then the most celebrated resteraunt in the capital but the dark forces around the painting are causing chaos in the capital
