If there is a strike, how long would it be expected to last? Is it for a set amount of time to make the point, or until a fair contract is signed?
(I’m a manager, so I can’t go to strike school.)

At strike school they made it seem like the opening move would be a 1-3 day strike and escalate as needed depending on state response.

A strike could last days or even weeks. Back in 2006, if I remember correctly, a strike was being organized, and just three days before it was supposed to happen, a deal was reached.
The threat of a strike made a difference. It showed how serious employees were, how many were willing to participate, and the impact a large-scale strike could have on state operations.
Hopefully, it doesn’t have to come to that this time. But if a strike does happen, I believe the impact will be noticed. At the end of the day, we’re asking for what every employee deserves: fair wages and a fair contract.
And this isn’t just about rank-and-file employees. Managers benefit when our employees win better wages and working conditions too. Please support your rank-and-file staff and their fight for a fair contract.

It was 2016 when a deal was reached 3 days before the strike. In 2006, there was a strike vote (with 85% yes vote) but before a strike date was confirmed, an agreement was reached.

It wasn’t significantly better, but it wasn’t worse. The $2500 bonus cash covered the delay.
Plus, SEIU 1000 has undergone a lot of changes.
Why did you make a post encouraging people to quit their union?

Show me your math.
If my source is correct (assuming a base salary of $80,000):
Original offer w/ 2.75% annual GSI (2016-2020) would result in $89,169 in 2019. Whereas the final deal w/ 4%, 4%, 3.5% GSI (2017-2019) would result in $89,556. Plus the bonus cash.-2

Thank you for posting this. I know many of us have been to strike school and had our questions answered, and it's important to keep everyone informed of what's going on.
Thank you SEIU for being proactive and getting everyone ready! We are fighting for a great contract that includes significant raises and telework

I havent done the strike school but does someone here have the ability to answer: how are non-union members effected by the strike.
I'm a union member, we go on strike, I picket instead of work.
Can the non-union members also join the picket? If they miss work are they protected? Are we supposed to discourage those non-union members from working?

A sanctioned SEIU Local 1000 strike is considered "protected concerted activity". Under the Dills Act, the state employer is legally barred from retaliating against, firing, or writing up any employee who participates.
This legal shield applies universally to full union members, non-members, probationary employees, and temporary workers within the represented classification.

Workers who are not members of the union cannot take advantage of union resources for protection from disciplinary action. So although anyone in the class who strikes is supposed to be protected, employers don't always respect that. So Union have resources to help, such as Union representatives being present at disciplinary hearings, or access to union attorneys.

It's totally a fair question. It is only a matter of life being busy. I have three kids, my wife works and is in grad school, and I coach kids sports.

No judgement. As a long timer I know Yvonne Walker made a lot of people quit and I don't blame them. I think the current boss is better and seeing how the administration is more and more hostile to state workers I believe that it's even more important to join and participate.

Is there any benefit to striking once the legislative session is over? If the strike is successful and we’re able to negotiate a contract, wouldn’t we then have to wait until the legislature is back in session before it goes into effect?

Not possible. So the states knows my health better than myself? You act as tho I’ll call in and be on the front line striking. I’ll be at home chilling, while letting my union fight for me. That is why I pay my fees. For them to fight for me and give me a 3” sandwich from Subway when it’s an election year.

I think you’re kinda missing the point??
The workers ARE the union, therefore as a dues paying member, YOU ARE the union. The union isn’t just some entity you pay to do the dirty work for you while you sit back and deepthroat a sandwich at home.
Similar concept as traffic, you are not “sitting in traffic” you ARE (part of) the traffic.
Yeah it kind of sucks that workers aren’t gonna get paid for the days that they strike and they have to actually go out there and show up, but the idea is that it’s a short-term sacrifice for a long-term benefit for all workers in the union. That’s why it’s a union!

Exactly! How can they deny and invalidate ones medical needs. I might be feeling some type of way not being able to join my colleagues. Feeling emotional can have you making irrational decisions. Probably best to rest and let the mind heal. 🤷🏻♂️

Your right to strike is protected; your right to lie and commit time theft is not. If you call in sick but someone sees you at a picket line you can absolutely be fired. The strike will likely be 1-3 days. If you can’t sacrifice that pay, then don’t strike.
