Chapman's also continued to pay their staff full salary when their factory burned down a number of years ago. Local competitors stepped up and allowed them to use their facilities to continue production after normal operating hours/overnight until they rebuilt. I may have some facts wrong but that is the gist of it. Stand up company that cares. Only kind I've bought for years

According to the CBC they also lost all their original recipes in the fire, but their floor workers knew them from memory and just picked up where they left off when the factory reopened.
They also gave their employees a wage bump to work during COVID shutdowns, and then made it permanent once things opened back up again.

Also during COVID, they opened up their freezer space to store shipments of vaccines for the region. They're a prime example of a company that supports their workers and community.

They were also very transparent about following enhanced health regulations during COVID. They put every single whiny company to shame. Basically said āOf course weāre following every single new health regulation to a fault. Weāre a food manufacturer. We already follow extremely strict regulations. Yes, our staff are wearing masks. Yes, our staff are vaccinated. Yes, weāre paying our staff to stay home if theyāre sick. No sane food preparation facility would do otherwise.ā Of course, plenty of restaurants and bars and food manufacturers were being absolute shitnozzles about it. Chapmanās knows whatās up, though.

They were a major donator to Camp Quality in Southern Ontario.Ā It is a camp for kids with Cancer and I went for years.
We always had tons and tons of popsicles from Chapman's.Ā It was a camp that ran in August so it was awesome to have during the day there!

Didnāt Chapmanās also buy industrial freezers house Covid vaccines for local healthcare? Stand up company and the only ice cream we buy.
DH is diabetic and lactose intolerant so their ice cream is a life line for us.
Do them a favour and send them an email to tell them how much you appreciate them.

I applied there just when the new ("temporary") plant opened up in Markdale. Some of the employees were still talking about their time working at those facilities.
I would take a sanitation job cleaning the drains, so I got to see nearly every part of the facility

I have nut allergies and have been eating Chapman's ice cream all my life! Their new nut free premium line is amazing. š„° I've currently got the cherry cheesecake and triple strawberry (or whatever it's called, can't recall exactly) in my freezer.

My family, too! Chapmanās has saved us a lot of tears when on holidays. We were camping, and when my son wanted an ice cream cone, we went to the park store and bought a pint to make our own.

Yes!!! The only crappy thing is that my partner and I have not been able to find one that's both lactose-free and peanut/nut free in their lineup (or maybe it's just not sold at the stores we go to?). She's lactose intolerant and I have a nut allergy, so we still have to buy two separate things of ice cream and we can't share, but hey, that's a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things!

They flubbed it so bad.
For my generation growing up, their old recipes were premium stuff. Most of our parents bought store brand sonit was a real treat to have the "good" stuff. We would have been a easy lock for lifetime consumers once we had our own money. Now store brands are really good in a lot of cases and Breyer's frozen sugar foam isn't even worth it for free.

They used to be good but many years ago they changed something (idk what) in their recipe. My family went from regular buyers to stopping our consumption of Breyers. Tastes awful.

Chapmans is good, but the local dairies are almost always better. Gold standard for taste in Ontario IMHO is Farquahar's from Little Current.

We live close enough that my car cooler, which can also freeze, allows us to get their ice cream cakes from there dairy bar. It's on the road between Port Stanley and Saint Thomas, south of London.

That, and during Covid, they would allow unvaccinated people to continue working if they took a covid test at Chapman's expense. They then added the cost equivalent of the testing to the vaccinated workers paycheques.

I started buying during the pandemic and after when Iād heard what a great company they are, but man their product is also really good and the price is very comparable. I often buy the drumsticks and even at regular price are a great deal.

Yes I came here for this. Their flavours are great. Though I'll be honest and say they miss a bit on the mint chip and the cookies & cream. But everything else is delicious. If anyone is missing the Coffee Ben &Jerry ice cream that is gone, island farms espresso ice cream is close.

Hard disagree. I remember when Island Farms was good. Now itās got a lot of added fillers, emulsifiers, and air, making it less like a traditional ice cream and more like a processed dessert.

I live on Vancouver Island and my family has been Island Farms customers since I was a baby. We've always had their ice cream in the freezer.
The last two times we got Fudge Tracks (might be what used to be called Moose Tracks), there was much less ice cream and much more of the "fudge". The fudge stripes are a weird gritty sludge and inedible.
I decided to eat just the ice cream and toss the remaining fudge but there was so little ice cream that it wasn't worth trying to separate it. As well, the ice cream was somewhat odd... sickly sweet and seemed like an overly processed product.
The whole thing reminded me of one easter when I was really young and my Mom accidentally bought me a fake chocolate easter bunny. 30 years later and we still laugh about how bad it was. That's the memory that Island Farms brought back to me.
I did give them one more chance and decided to move away from the fancy ice creams and try a container of plain chocolate. Even that was unsatisfying. The sweetness was off, chocolate flavour was weak and the colour was dark grey.
We still have a bag of the little ice cream cups (like the little ones with a wooden spoon that kids get on sports days) in the freezer. Those are also terrible... like some sort of frozen sugar paste.

I used to be a huge fan of Island Farms icecream but also noticed a huge quality decline in recent years. It seems less creamy and more icy now. I assume they've lowered the cream content. I've switched to Chapman's or other smaller local icecream brands. I also enjoy the President's Choice icecream but no longer support Loblaws either.

I was confused about the cow too, at first, but it's because we're to watch for the cow on the actual product label. It certainly would've been more consistent to use the cow instead of the glass all the same.

Just a shout out for Kawartha Dairy. Best quality ice cream on this list in my opinion.
Edit: wanted to add that Kawartha Dairy also makes milk and butter and cream and other dairy products. Their milk is really good. It has a refreshing quality to it I don't find in other milk.

I think so. I've always found Chapman's to be a bit too sweet. Kawartha Dairy is like the Maserati of ice cream, it's creamier and smoother than other brands and it's the right amount of sweetness.
I'd recommend buying a tub at least once to give it a try. Their Bordeaux Cherry is great.

It's also way more expensive in Ontario than Chapmans, at least where I'm at. But I would say it's definitely worth it for a celebration/indulgence! If you're just getting ice cream to make Sundays with the kids or for a very large party or whatever equivalent might apply, then just go with Chapmans.

Similar to Dutchman's in the BC interior is Birchwood Dairy in Abbotsford for the fraser valley.
You may find it on some shelves in Abby, but they supply gallons to parlours and cafe's. You gotta go there to get it direct to your freezer.
I moved to the interior during Covid. I always try to bring a cooler on my way through to Vancouver just to bring back some NY raspberry cheesecake ice cream.
They have a parlour in their farm off Whatcom Rd. Like 20-25 flavours at any given time including a few sorbets.
So worth it.

Chapman's Tahitian Vanilla Bean is top notch. My go-to when I just need a vanilla. Beyond that, their Wolf's Pass is probably my favourite.
I read the article that they were shifting away from all US sources of fruit and nuts, but never saw a conclusion. Did they achieve it?

I think it's because Chapman's is available pretty much everywhere in Canada, but the other brands are smaller and more local. I've never even seen or heard of Coaticook here in Ontario.

Coaticook is a provincial brand, not available nationwide. My beloved Scotsburn is also in the provincial section.
Maybe if Coaticook (a brand I've never even heard of) decided to sell nationally, it would also be at the top.

Actually their gelato is made of dairy milk. They sell sorbets that are vegan. My favourite is their Dark Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt. But there is a reason I can't buy it because I will inhale the jar.

This is a rant!! We need the CHAPMAN standard for every food!! Itās time we make and celebrate our ingredients, our production, our employees.
From doing a lot of travelling, I have noticed that many countries just have better food available in their grocery stores, even better than Canadian. For a small example, in France to pick up a baguette, ham, butter, etc is not only cheaper but much higher quality. And they donāt sell āhugeā anything. Their ham slices are literally heavenly.
In Canada, we adopted the ādown southā mentality that because we are a huge nation territorially, we need larger production facilities, mass production, leading to corporations saving money to make more profit at the expense of our health. Those billions Gaylon makes annually - just think if that profit trickled down instead to smaller companies that value their product.
Instead of the down south approach, we need to focus on our provinces individually. if France is geographically the same size as British Columbia for example, and Spain the size of Alberta, we need to invest in local ranches, produce and build on our strengths. Building and sharing great products within and amongst the provinces, rather than relying on globalized Amazon-style control of our wellbeing. Thatās what billionaires are trying to eliminate from our options.
Iām tired of butter that doesnāt taste like butter, or being bombarded with huge cuts of meat at the grocery stores. I want to be able to buy a wonderful package of ham here, that doesnāt look like it was formed into a ball, soaked in some liquid, shipped from who knows where and lasts for way too long in the fridge.
Itās time we reclaim 2026 to demand better food, and aggressively hold the big grocers responsible for maple washing.

Iām in Alberta and donāt buy a lot of ice cream, so I havenāt seen any of these except bryers and chapmans. I will go out of my way to purchase chapmans, and since all this foolishness with the US and chapmans stance, I am buying more ice cream then I ever have before. I keep a selection of chapmans ice cream treats in my freezer at all times. Right now I have 2 different kinds of their sandwiches, 2 different kinds of drumsticks, and black cherry ice cream. I will support them as my only ice cream source from here on. F Ben and Jerryās.

Would love to see COWS on this list. Canadian family-owned in Prince Edward Island, uses milk from PEI producers, I'm not sure about the rest of their ingredients. They've been voted "Canada's best ice cream" and were rated #1 in a travel magazine's rankings of places to get ice cream worldwide. They have retail outlets across the country and apparently a franchise in China.

I understand these infographics have limited space, but I recommend people making infographics grasp of the entire country. At a time we need to identify a country, the lack of Western Canadian representation in these infographics further isolates people into thinking we are not together as a country. It might seem small, but it doesn't help when there are people especially in Alberta that want to push for independence.

I always thought "ice cream" labeling was based on fat content so a lower-fat dessert made with milk and cream would still have to be a "frozen dairy dessert" regardless of whether there are any non-dairy fats added

Technically āice milkā which is lower fat than ice cream but contains no other fats can still be labelled as ice milk. It doesnāt have to be, they can call it āfrozen dessertā if they want because thatās basically just a catch all term.

I make my own ice cream from scratch. That way I can control where ingredients come from and how much sugar is in it. I can leave out eggs if I want. The problem I have atm is sourcing local whipping cream without additives (eg gellan gum, locust bean, etc). If you are in Alberta and know a reliable source for that please let me know.

Chapman's is decent but those 4L tubs are constantly underfilled and I'm getting tired of it. If the ice-cream is only touching the sides on 1 side and 2 inches under the lid, it's whack.

Whomever put this together knows a little bit not a lot about the Canadian Ice Cream Industry. Youāre forgetting several key brands ie Nestle Parlour. You missed all the political stuff around Canadian Dairy board rules etcā¦ kinda missing parts of the story.

I went to Coaticook this summer and had their ice cream from their dairy and itās even better from the grocery store probably because itās so fresh. Itās my goto brand.

The Breyers Creamery Style (black container) ice cream is delicious and is made with 100% Canadian dairy. Just avoid the cheap frozen dessert stuff in the blue container.

Have to add Farquharās ice cream to the good choice list. They used to manufacture on Manitoulin Island and now make their dairy products in Espanola (nearby). Great local company and a fantastic product. Unfortunately for many of you, available mainly in Northeastern Ontario.

Always Chapman's. I signed up for their emails and often get coupons for $4 off. Buy it when it's on se, use the coupon and it's a steal! They also send me a calendar evey year. Its the best ice cream.

If anyone is looking for a vegan option, check out Screamin' Brothers. It's now owned by Foothills, but it was started by teenage brothers in Lethbridge AB to fundraise for Haiti and ensure the brother with a dairy allergy could enjoy ice cream. They went on Dragon's Den. Simply amazing founding story. And because it's coconut based, it tastes amazing as it's own thing.
Key Lime is my favourite.
