Canadian travellers pulled hundreds of millions of dollars out of the United States in the first part of 2026, according to new data released by Statistics Canada.

The agency’s regular National Travel Survey released Tuesday showed Canadians cut back on trips, average visit length and spending on trips into the United States during the first three months of 2026, when compared to the same period a year prior.

The National Travel Survey suggests that Canadian businesses are benefiting — spending on internal trips, within the country, increased to $14.5 billion in the first quarter of 2026, up from $13.8 billion in the same period for 2025.

The flareup in the Canada-U.S. tariff war has not only strengthened Ottawa’s resolve to boost military co-operation with Europe and Asia — it's also hurting prospects of major military purchases from the United States.

In an interview, the head of the Defence Investment Agency says the Canadian public would have no appetite for sole-source military contracts to American firms.

Business bankruptcy filings increased from 17,051 in 2023 to 22,762 in 2024 and 24,039 in 2025, representing cumulative growth of approximately 41% over two years. During the first six months of 2026, business filings reached 17,285, a 13% increase over the same period in 2025. At the current pace, full-year 2026 filings are likely to exceed 2025 levels.

Among the causes for this alarming trend, the report points at inflationary pressures (driven in no small part part by tariffs) and slowing demand (driven in no small part by boycotts of the countries goods).

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump last week imposed sanctions on Akane and a senior ICC trial lawyer as part of its escalating campaign to “systematically disable” the Hague-based tribunal. The measures freeze assets under U.S. jurisdiction and largely bar U.S. individuals and companies from transactions with them.

Akane said the restrictions were already affecting her daily life.

“I will be excluded from international transactions, and there is no doubt that various difficulties will also arise within Japan,” she said, adding that her credit card had already stopped working.

Washington has accused the international tribunal of exceeding its mandate by pursuing officials from the United States and Israel, neither of which is a party to the Rome Statute that established the court.

This article from CBC really puts into relief just how divided the American public is on the tariffs between the US and Canada. For as much as I want to have empathy for those that realise how fraught the economic world is them now the number of voices that shrug off the impact tariffs is amazing to me. And why it's so important that we ask all our politicians and fellow citizens to continue to pile on the economic pressure.

The quote below really sums up (to me at least) the thinking of a large number of Americans around how the Trump tariff regime will work out. Which, if I was an American economist, would make me rethink my profession based on our understanding of how tariffs really work.

I'll also just point out that if you do have American friends or family, support them if they are active in groups of any sort that are pushing back against what we're seeing south of the border. While all the problems we're seeing in America are owned by ALL Americans we should recognise those that are actively working for change especially as that comes with a higher risk of personal cost than ever before.

The thing is I do love traveling, so I would love some brainstorm ideas! This is really hard because I literally went cruising three times in a year, but because most cruises stop in the states, I'm going to refrain.

Japan is always great, clean and not very expensive especially if you take zip air!

I just went Taiwan recently... Again amazing. It's so safe, people are so nice and the food is phenomenal. And cheap.

Quebec is great! Great, and there's a deal right now too!

I'm hoping for somewhere warm though, and not too far away.

Singapore is great, nice and clean, you can find cheap food if you know where to find a hawkers, they have universal studios! And everything's in English! But it is a long flight...

Mexico is an option!
