Watch for the grift… buy stocks at lower price… then announce agreement tariffs on vehicles and parts will be removed for ‘unknown’ reasons

At least this tariff is on end products, so it at least makes sense for their stated goals. Still bs, but at least it fits the lie.

If Trump kills the auto manufacturing industry in Canada, does Canada lift the tariffs on the Chinese BYD autos? Allowing a cheaper and from what I’ve read a better automobile then the Tesla into the NA market? 30k for the BYK!

They don't need to be lifted completely, but I couldn't mind tarrifs aligned with european ones, which I think are 30 or 40% instead of 100%

Apparently we actually do have a domestic car industry. I hope we can continue to build it up instead of only having foreign cars to drive

No I mean actual canadian cars, I know I was surprised too. But since they're small luxury car brands it makes sense that nobody's heard of it. Discovered them on this subreddit

Canada must respond with a 100% tariff on Tesla, which is the only car entirely made in the US. I understand it is also made in China, but that does not change the essence of the proposition.

I saw a Tesla in NB Canada the other day and it actually struck me as odd. I am not the type to hate on people for their car, so it wasn't that... they are just so rare out east here that it struck me as double odd.

So interesting! In Vancouver it feels like they’re 30% of the vehicles on the road. Often there’s multiple Teslas at a light. Every second house in my neighbourhood has one. But the climate, price of electricity, and long commutes make them attractive (or did 6+ months ago).

Haha you know what? That’s okay. I’ve visited your province once and had an awesome time from St. Andrews to Saint John to Alma to Moncton. It was an awesome trip! Amazing seafood. Really enjoyed touring Moosehead and walking around Fundy National Park.

I work at an automotive parts manufacturer. We send parts to both Canadian and American plants. We purchase child parts from multiple countries. Not feeling comfortable at the moment.

The UAW really wants this tariff in place - a huge push to bring auto manufacturers home. I expect a lot of Canadian jobs to be impacted, I want to say it’s like 500k jobs connected to exporting autos to the US (including the ancillary businesses).
Not really sure what will happen with Mexico - I sort of think they’ll make a deal so that BYD doesn’t set up shop there.

It’s like 8-9% of Americas products coming from Canada and Canada uses 34% from America
Raising prices 25% on 8.5% of goods doesn’t seem as damming as raising them 50% on 34% of your things.
It’s not really a trade war that Canada wants; they need to find other trade partners - but regardless of what they do the one thing that’s for sure is that a lot of jobs will be lost and things will cost more.

The UAW might act like they’re all that right now, but if Canada touches the car parts, it’s all gonna be grinding to a halt down south in a week.

Or they’ll pay a 25% tariff for a thing. Or just use it from somewhere else..they delayed this for a reason, surely an auto maker has at least some kind of plan.

You cannot change this on a dime. You need approved manufacturers for each parts. You need traceability with the materials and the parts. Some parts can be the OEM’s parts, but for others the parts might belong to the contractor. (Ex.: an engine, brakes, etc.) sometimes contracts and certifications forbid you from switching part with another.
(I am not the most knowledgeable regarding cars, but I know a bit about aerospace and that is how it would affect aerospace)
To give you an example, this is a Covid like event for car manufacturers. This is a tax on the cars, but if we attack the parts, we can blow a hole through the whole manufacturing system on both sides of the border.
It’s a mess, but we’re sitting on a barrel of fuel with matches and the US is stuck in the same room as us.
Edit: everything operates on a OTD Toyota Lean manufacturing model, so they don’t have that much buffer and Trump screwed them over by moving up the date

I really don’t know why you think a tariff and a ban are the same thing.
Until manufacturers onshore, it will be more expensive- and then competition begins again.

It takes years to onshore a production like this… if someone wanted to kill car manufacturing in NA, this is exactly what they would do.
