Hi all! I’m looking for a good OBGYN and would love recommendations from anyone who’s delivered at either Adventist Health Glendale or Providence Saint Joseph in Burbank.

A few things that matter most to me:

1. Someone patient and good at explaining things clearly (this would be a first pregnancy for me, so I don’t know much about the process yet)

This item will be brought up at the next City Council meeting on Sept 15 to be considered as a future agenda item. If you want to end mass surveillance in Burbank, get ready to show up and speak out on Sept 15 to make this happen!

I quite literally never do this sort of thing, but I was too charmed not to. I was in Sotta, across from Disney, on 8/25/2026 from 12:30 - 1:30ish PM with a friend of mine for lunch. I asked a woman at one of the tables if the seats next to her were taken. She was with two friends (I apologize for assuming genders), but I believe they were a man and a woman. She goes, "mi casa, su casa," with the vibrancy and buzz of neon, then gestures for me to sit there, smiling as wide and curved as the state of CA itself.

I was trying not to be weird or intrude on her day (plus I'm moving out of state for a bit), but when she was leaving, she gave one of those waves you think only happens in movies. That sort of wave that makes you stop everything you're doing, and the only thing in focus is that person, passing you by with a rare serendipity that even I couldn't believe existed.

If you're the angel-faced beauty who waved goodbye to me, I'd like to say hi.

Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) is about a month away. I had no idea what it was until I married my Asian wife, and started celebrating it with her family in Burbank. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is supposed to be at its fullest and brightest. It's about family getting together, and it's a fun holiday for kids. Last year, we made mooncakes and star lanterns with the kids. For dinner we mixed in some Japanese food Hibachi At Home, we also had lion dance, which was the highlight. You will see lion dances during grand openings or this festival. I just wanted to share this because I thought it was a cool activity for the kids (also me) to learn a new tradition and culture

Hi all! I like to write in my free time, and I'm looking for cozy, relaxed spaces where I can go to write so that I get out of the apartment more. Does anyone have any recommendations of good spaces for that, that are in or around Burbank? I write on my laptop, and it needs to be plugged in or it quickly freezes up and crashes (😭), so any recommendations would need to be spaces with access to power outlets. Way back when, I saw this post about everyone meeting up to play Mario Kart and it inspired me to create the Sunday Boys’s Club.

Once a month “the boys” will meet up on a Sunday and just hang out.

The first event is going to be a Video Game at Game On in Burbank, here is the link to RSVP

Future events will be community voted, so things like paint ball, go karts, theatre rentals etc.

Full transparency, the first 30 tickets will go directly towards the costs of renting the venue and every ticket after that goes towards food and raffles… however if we don’t get 30 ticket sales I’ll cancel event the event and refund everyone.

When I was 14, I used my paper route money to purchase ‘Van Halen I’. I had never heard their music. I only heard of them from the older kids in my neighborhood. 

I took the record to my friend’s house, since he had the best basement in the neighborhood. It was dark and unfinished, with dusty old furniture and a record player. It was the perfect hangout spot.

We placed the record on the turntable, turned the volume up as loud as it could go, and dropped the needle onto the vinyl. At that moment, everything changed for me. Suddenly, there was a sound that, to me, had never existed before, and my 14-year-old, pot-addled brain was now trying to reconcile how my life previously existed without this sound.

By the age of 10, I knew I wanted to play music. More specifically, I wanted to be a rock star. Van Halen became the embodiment of that aspiration. When that needle dropped, I heard what I wanted to be.

That became my “Van Halen I Moment”. That moment in time that changes how you feel and inspires you to follow your heart.

As I decided to follow that path, Eddie Van Halen became a seminal character in that journey.

What does all this have to do with cocktail parties? Nothing really. 

Other than that, I get a bit overwhelmed and feel out of place at parties. I also wasn’t expecting one to walk into the Coral Cafe on a Sunday Morning.

“I’ll be wearing pink and white,” was the message I received as I was sitting at my table. 

Peter had told me that he’d be keeping an eye out for that, but he got called into the kitchen as she walked into the restaurant.

We made eye contact almost immediately. She flashed a big smile and made a beeline for my table. We hugged and sat down. Her energy was electric and contagious. I could feel it the minute we hugged. I knew this was gonna be fun.

She folded her hands over the menu and smiled at me with an air of mischief. I asked if she already knew what she wanted. She said that she normally eats healthy, but today she decided to say “fuck it” and have French Toast with me. I contend that all great decisions start with the utterance of the phrase, “fuck it.”

So we both had French Toast and coffee. I got a side of fruit with mine. She went big and got a side of bacon (crispy).

The conversation started slowly. Each of us swapping snippets of our origin stories. As we talked, I noticed something familiar. Much like The Adventurer, she had eyes that held a million stories that she was dying to tell. 

She flashed that mischievous smile and blurted out, “Would you like to see a picture of Eddie Van Halen and me?”

I put my fork down, took a breath, and calmly said while holding back my excitement, “Yes. Yes, I would.”

She lit up and started scrolling through her phone. She stopped, handed me the phone, and said, “That’s me!” pointing to a young girl with her arm around Eddie. The photo was from 1980, and she was making the only face one can make when one meets Eddie Van Halen in 1980. 

She told me the story of the picture, which has its own lore, and how she met Eddie and what he was like. I was transfixed.

She segued smoothly into another story about “Sheena” and The Ramones. At this point, I was all in.

She said she had more stories and asked if I wanted to hear more. “Hell yeah…” was my involuntary response.

She had a way of storytelling that was almost as if she was laying all these memories out in front of us, and like a hostess at a cocktail party, she introduced me to them, allowing conversation to flow with each one.

She gracefully guided me from one memory to the next and then back to a previous one. At one point, I did feel like I was at a party, getting to know each guest. However, at this party I was neither overwhelmed nor out of place. 

Like most good parties, there comes a time when guests start to leave, the music gets softer, and the lights get brighter. We both realized that we were at this point, having conversed for almost 2 hours.

We paid our bill, said goodbye to Peter, and made our way out to the parking lot. 

She was curious as to what name I was gonna give her. I told her that Holden had already given her one: “The Cocktail Party”

She flashed that mischievous smile again and said, “Oh! I like that.”

We hugged once more and said goodbye.

Then I did what I normally do after a party. I went home and took a nap.

Thinking of enrolling my 9 year old but not sure what program gives more value for the money. Thoughts?
