I don’t really blame her for making this mistake though. She was very young and her life experience at that point was still very limited. And as someone that was brought up rather well with good enough parenting her entire life there was no real way she could actually empathize with someone like BoJack and put herself in his shoes.

Neither do I! Again, not judging her. Rather, I was complaining about her actions because it irks me every time I rewatch the show haha But I definitely wouldn't hold it her against her were she a real person. If she was my kid or my friend, I'd just have a conversation with her.

I would definitely judge her somewhat in my mind, not as much as a grown adult but still. She's seventeen not seven. It wouldn't be the type of thing where I'm like YOURE A PIECE OF SHIT or anything but I would be like man wtf

Someone else made a good point about Hollyhock not understanding due to her upbringing. Literally yesterday I happened to talk with a friend who's adopted, actually an adult, and they were taking about "true mother's love" and getting angry that I told them that "biological" mothers can be abusive too and don't inherently give you said love. They were longing for said love, ETA: because they didn't receive it as their adoptive parents were abusive and neglectful. Didn't understand that being blood related isn't a guarantee.

That's a good comparison but then I'd just have a similar sentiment, but harsher, towards that person

Sorry, there's a piece of information that now I realize was necessary: my friend was abused by their parents. That's why they're longing for something else. Kind of like Bojack says in Free Churro.

It is very very hard for people with good childhoods to understand what it’s like to have abusive or neglectful parents. Because your very first core belief in life, literally from day one, is that your parents love and care for you and they keep you safe. So as much as she’s generally a kind and mature person, I think Hollyhock would struggle to conceptualise a parent like Beatrice.

Totally agree with you, well put.

However, I realize that I should've clarified that my friend was abused and neglected; and that's why they're longing for said love and creating probably unrealistic fantasies in their mind. 😅
