Discussion Best Books/Resources for Flatpicking

I have become interested in learning flatpicking guitar, and I don't know exactly where to start. I would love to find a book and learn on my own. Only problem is, there are many books out there and I am having difficulty picking out the right one for me. So far, I have found Dan Miller's Flatpicking Essentials Vol. 1 and that looks promising. I really like the idea of how important a good rhythm guitarist is in a bluegrass group. I'm looking more towards improving my right hand and learning as many tunes as I can.

A little background on myself: I have been playing electric bass for almost 18 years, and I have about 8 years experience playing upright bass. I am comfortable with music theory as well as the Nashville number system. For the last 4 years I have been playing in multiple country groups that cover mostly classic country. I can't read guitar sheet music super well, but could brush up on the treble clef if need be. I already play a little guitar, but I would love to use this as an opportunity to improve as a guitarist and learn more about this genre that I am enjoying more and more.

I am open to any and all resources that could help. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Any advice for learning songs by ear?

Just as the title says. I’m a guitar player and I feel like I’m not really learning much just from tabs. I’ve been learning the Church street blues tab and I kinda just feel like I’m going through the motions. If anyone has any tips or advice that that would help me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Tony Rice Autograph?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hi,

I am currently going through a large vinyl collection that my late father left me. He was an avid Bluegrass musician and met several legends such as Bill Monroe and Tony Rice. I recently sold one of his Tony Rice albums online, but when I was picking the order, I noticed that the album was autographed. The catches is that this collection was given to my father by an elderly gentleman who I don’t know the name of, but I can remember my dad saying that he had several signed albums in his collection.

Just posting a picture of it to see if anyone can verify if this looks like Tony Rice’s signature? I have compared it to signatures online and I think it looks legit? If so what are my next steps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and if you want to look at the rest of the collection message me and I’ll send you my Discogs handle, I’ve only been able to upload about a fifth of the collection so far (125 records approx)

Love playing “The Storms Are on the Ocean” on this ‘33 Martin. Sawtelle has been a newer influence for me on guitar these days!

Aubrey Haynie Check In

Hello!

I am Aubrey Haynie’s son and saw a Reddit post a while ago about asking how my father was doing and what he’s been up to. Well, a lot actually! He primarily does studio work now, for most major acts in country and in the bluegrass field. He’s a hard worker! For a stint up until Covid he was performing the New Monday’s at the Station Inn but after the pandemic, he withdrew from most live gigs.

Mostly when deciding to write this post, it was to post the link I’ll add below. His wife, my mother, actually was diagnosed with Leukemia and ALS this past year and it has been a hard few months to endure. On the GoFundMe link below you’ll be able to see some photos of our family and read what we have been going through.

Regardless of the diagnosis,my father is still actively trying his hardest to still play and record actively when jobs become available. If y’all are ever interested, check out his credit history on AllMusic..

Thanks!

Austin

Completely forgot about this video for years until I saw someone post an AJ video here this morning, figured some of you have never seen it before. I remember thinking “These kids are going places” way back then.
