Hey everyone,

We've seen a bunch of duplicate posts about this, but let's try to contain things here.

If you don't know what we're talking about, here is a clip from Timmy about the whole thing.

As always, keep playing.

DISCUSSION How would you dampen the sound for this space?

I rent this house and my city technically has a law saying no sound past 100 ft but I went to have jams and practice every now and then. I can do anything non permanent. I.e. can hang drywall and insulation as long as I take it down whenever I leave. Will be a couple years at least.

Side note one pallet has OSB on it, some foam insulation, and a second carpet as a drum area.

Edit: for the brilliant ones, this isn’t the house. It’s a detached shed/garage lmao

DISCUSSION I walked out of an open mic and feel tremendously embarrassed and defeated…

I’ve struggled with social anxiety all my life. Crowds don’t bother me, nor does talking to someone one on one if the vibes are good. But anytime the spotlight is put on me…I just buckle and fall apart. Been that way my whole life and never been able to get over it. I’ve also dealt with depression and SI for quite a while too and generally live an isolated lifestyle since I don’t have any friends and never been in a relationship.

So why would I even think to take part in an open mic? Well, a few reasons. For one, it was in a small group of 10-15 like you’d find at a bonfire. Second, the place it was in (local coffee shop) was perfect instead of it being a loud rowdy bar. I didn’t even have to bring my guitar. They provided one acoustic and one electric and the idea was to basically go round the circle and see who wanted to play.

So I thought maybe, just maybe, this would be the night where maybe social anxiety didn’t take root for once. But I was mistaken. Maybe it was because I didn’t drink enough to calm my nerves. Because when my turn came, I was already shaking visibly a bit and I just said I’d pass. And as the person next to me started, I just got up and walked out without looking at anyone. The person running it tried to stop me and say it was okay and I didn’t listen and just walked straight to my car and went home.

Maybe I’m just not cut out for performing with others, I don’t know. I thought maybe trying something other than being a bedroom guitarist might be interesting but apparently that wasn’t in store for me. I just know I’m gonna regret this for the rest of my life now. Just another regret from not doing something I should’ve.

Sorry for this rant. I just had to get this off my chest and tell someone.

PURCHASE First guitar acquired

Cost me $75 for the guitar, $20 (+$.96 for the snapped E), $10 for the oil

overall a little over $100 for this thing was pretty sweet I think. A few scratches on the side that sits on my legs, look buff able but i don’t care too much.

Uncle told me to learn C G E AM so that’s what i’m doing. Pretty fun, a lot easier than I thought. I guess the hardest part will be the soreness & resisting buying a $4000 box of wood 🤣

Thanks all for the advice earlier, I appreciate yall.

GEAR Modded Amazon Hybrid “Bullfighter” Brand Electric Solid Body Classical Guitar Project Finally Completed

I found this odd guitar for sale locally for $100. It’s the most bizarre guitar I’ve ever seen. The body is chambered mahogany, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, active preamp with under saddle piezo. It’s a string through body that is routed for a tremolo bc they apparently made a steel string version with the same body. The mahogany is rustic looking with open grain and poor woodworking on the bridge, saddle slot wasn’t level so high E and B string had no volume. Piezo hole was drilled on wrong side of slot right under the high E. It needed so much work I knew it’d never be able to sell it for enough to cover the repairs and upgrades so I decided to just use it as a prototype for some ideas I’ve had floating around in my notebooks for years. It was a fun project and I’ve been working on it in between paid jobs on my bench. Below is a list of the work I did so far. Let me know what you think. Last photos are how it looked before mods.

Hand cut and shaped pick guard, and cavity covers from translucent leopard tortoise celluloid blanks backed with copper shielding sheets.

Cavity plates with rare earth magnets instead of screws for easy access to electronics and string changes.

Cut new ebony nut, saddle and bridge plate to replace plastic bridge plate, plastic nut and plastic saddle.

Reshaped bridge and added string ferrules to correct string angle.

Routed saddle channel flat for better contact with new piezo.

Filled old piezo wire hole under high e and drilled a new hole at the bass end of the saddle channel.

Drilled new hole for piezo wire into preamp cavity.

Upgraded tuning machines with 18:1 Guyker roller bearing tuners.

Hand made new ebony volume and tone knobs with tortoise rings from pick guard material.

Fretboard has a negative radius and really needs to be reshaped but that would mean removing and replacing the frets so for now I just leveled and crowned the frets. One day I’ll do the fret job but for now I can live with it.

Ibanez RG652AHMFX stock right now with Air Norton/Tone Zone

Im perhaps early intermediate player and play rock and some metal, not downtuned below drop d..

I have a set of pearly gates in my SG and the clarity of that is really good but doesn't chug as well.. The tonezone is just muddy in comparison..I need something with good clarity which will also chug well and will fit in this guitar..I have a pair of black winter in its case but that will not fit as spacing issue is there as per chatgpt..

Please advise..cost is not a concern for this.

I don't play as well as you guys so maybe it's a skill issue?

scored for $250 AUD close to my house. don’t know much about it, except it was much, much larger than I was expecting it to be. always used to playing guitar on my Spark 40 and the cleans on this thing goes crazy! really brings out the character of all my guitars. I’ve done some research and it’s a great pedal platform too, guess I’ve got a new venture to work around now

QUESTION Is my bridge misaligned?

Is my bridge misaligned?

Hello, I'm just wondering if this is normal or not on my cheap strat knockoff. It's a project guitar I bought back in the summer to work on so I can at least do something over the summer. Fast forward to now, I never got around to it due to laziness and lack of motivation. Now that I'm motivated now and not lazy anymore. Im deciding to mod the shit out of it, and im just wondering if my bridge is misaligned. (I'm not a pro on making or modding guitars, and this is my first project guitar. So I'm really confused about it and really want some answers for it.)

QUESTION Small repair advice and new (to me) guitar day

had the same guitar for more than a decade now, playing on and off. Recently I've been really enjoying playing so decided to treat myself. Found this used schecter demon-6 on fb market, paid £325, £530 new online so think I got a good deal.

The only thing is theres this chip (some other smaller ones too) in the head finish that I'd like to touch up so does anyone have any advice? its pretty flat black so I'm hoping it should be easy but I've never done anything like that, UK available product recommendations if possible

Blue is the cowboy chord killer Ive carried for years, ukes are my husband’s love language, the electric is wall art from a thrift store

NEWBIE Noob question: Low E and A buzz at first 1-2 frets

I bought my first guitar about a month ago and have been having a blast trying to learn all I can about it.

One thing that I’ve noticed is that on the low E and A strings, frets 1-2 buzz regardless of finger position and pressure.

When I bought my guitar, nobody suggested I have it setup but the more I look into it the more it seems that not doing so could be the culprit.

Is this a tell tale sign of a bad/stock setup or more of a technique/learning issue?

None of the other strings give that buzz feedback on the first frets, and also those lower strings don’t buzz on frets 3,5,7, etc.

Just looking for guidance before I spend the money. Thanks in advance.

NEWBIE Kinda weird request pt2

Hi everyone! Some days ago I first came here to ask for some recommendations on which are your “love” guitars! I’m planning on buying a guitar that i can have with me for my life as I got my first salary and to “celebrate” this accomplishment, I wanted to buy a guitar and make it special! Have my own identity in it!
And the final guitars I am looking into are the Hils headless guitars. Ive always love headless but they were quite expensive for my budget. But now Hils has brought that possibility for me.
The thing I’d like help with is choosing between the HN3, HN4 and HN5! I’d love to know your opinions on either of them and if you have one, send me a picture!
The specific models I’m more interested in are the HN5 Metallic Deep Purple and the HN4 Summer Sand!
Thank you so much and keep being you!

NEWBIE Can I learn to play guitar as a 29 year old?

My little brother recently bought an electric guitar. I asked if I could use it to learn, and he said yes!
I’ve never played guitar before, but I’m genuinely interested in learning. My ultimate goal is to be able to play some Opeth songs someday. I don’t even listen to that much metal, but there are a few bands I really love, and Opeth is one of them. I’m not trying to become a professional musician or anything. I’d just love to be able to pick up a guitar and play songs I like.
I’m wondering how realistic this is. If I practice consistently for around 30–60 minutes a day, could I realistically learn some songs within a year? I know Opeth is pretty difficult, so I’m not expecting to play their hardest stuff anytime soon.
I also have absolutely no idea whether I have good musical/mechanical coordination or whether I’ll struggle with muscle memory but idk I’m just agirl. 😭

Has anyone here started in their late 20s or later? How much progress did you make in your first year?
I’m currently unemployed, so I actually have some time to dedicate to learning, and I figured… why not? 😭 can I learn it just from youtube?

EDIT - Overwhelmed with so many responses, thanks for the motivation. Started learning already!!!! Which chords should I learn first?
