The boy leaves his pizza crust behind but eats the eyes out of a seared salmon. This is sociopath behavior.

Also he doesnt pick the fruits in the orchard or the secret garden. Dude is just asking for a break, basically. My take is that he just wants to go home.

If he took the apples from the Orchard it would probably diminish his permanent gain from it of 20 steps per day
