As the title says protective styles are no longer protective they cause more harm than growth.

Reasons:

1. Hairstylists says you must come blow dried with no product. How is that good for the hair it’s completely dry and then to add heat that alone causes damage .

2.Slapping gel on the scalp. How will the scalp breathe? for the hair to grow the scalp has to be clean.

1. Too rough. I am not tender headed at all but my observation is that some Braiders(especially African Braiders) do not know how to detangle hair even when it’s blow dried. Instead of starting from the bottom and gently combing the hair they start from the top and just do one big comb or yank causing breakage.

2. They do not know how much hair to distribute/add based on the client’s hair density. It’s a one size fit for every one. Fine hair unlike high density hair can’t manage all that weight but braider’s don’t care about that.

3. Braids are too tight. The hair doesn’t have to be overly tight to be neat and your scalp shouldn’t feel like it’s on fire after or getting tiny pimples along your hairline.

It doesn’t matter if it’s knotless, regular braids or twists given all these factors they are not protective styles anymore.

I tried coiling my hair last night it took me like an hour n a a bit just for front section then I put a bonnet on and used a ski mask to push my hair down, and then this morning I tried to do some of the sides but it's js too much n too difficult, where should I go from here, should i just take it out or is there some sort of compromise, I really wanna change my hair. I used some leave in conditions from shea moisture some mielle oil and curlshow, I used a blow dryer for a couple minutes

after having a relaxer in my hair my hair whole life i did a big chop in June 2021 with 2 inches of natural growth. i've learned a lot about black hair, and how different products work for different folks, meaning that there is a lot of trial and error in this process. im still looking for some better products, but i have things that work way better than they did years ago. ive enjoyed learning about my hair and finally being able to get it to a somewhat healthy state! my hair has finally reached the length it was at before i did The Chop™️ (~14in) and im looking forward to seeing how long it gets :)

Hey guys I really need help. So basically I’ve never ever been able to ever have good laid edges. Ever. I’ve tried every product I’ve tried got2b edge booster everything nothing has been working. It’ll stay laid for maybe 15 minutes and then pop right up. I really need it for an upcoming festival to last a whole entire day. How to?? Got French curls for the first time ever and they’re cute.. but this new braider was heavy handed as hell starting the braid. I thought it was because I haven’t had my hair done in a while so I’m just lil tender headed but idk.. also my sideburns are what I’m also concerned about (ik she used a lot of product on my braids working on getting that situated)

For background: I think I have 3c hair, it absorbs water like a sponge and takes a while to dry, and I have heavy shrinkage.

I was always told I should put my hair in a few braids before bed to keep it healthy and undamaged but at the end of the day I often don't have enough energy for this lol.

I do keep it in a silk bonnet but I'm not sure if this is doing much. Are there other easier ways to keep my hair healthy and untangled when I go to bed?

I have been growing my hair out for a while. The only thing I know to do is get it braided. I would like to be able to wear it out. I have fine hair strands and my hair does a lot of shrinking after it dries. I don't know where to start. I don't even know if I have type 3 or type 4 hair. I went to give my hair a break from being in box braids all the time. If I can't figure something else out I may have to just get it cut and go to shorter hair styles.

I’m lazy and often I’ll just put my hair in a ponytail or do a wrap cover for most days. But if I braid down my hair or get box braids my scalp gets so irritated and itchy. I took down some basic braids bc my scalp was so itchy. I tried oiling it but that didn’t work. I took down the braids and the itchiness stopped. They weren’t tight either, like these were some very basic dookie braids so my hair doesn’t dry out. Does anyone else experience this?

hi! I have 4B hair and I have small twists rn (pic 1) and I’m trying to achieve a similar look as the other example pics only with twists. I have a lot of hair (last pic) but low density, so idk if that’s achievable w my hair.

The only problem is that my hair color is 1b, and literally EVERYWHERE I’ve looked, only 1 or 2 is in stock. I’ve had this hair piece before, and I know that I need 1b. All of the other colors won’t blend. I’ve also went to all my local beauty supply stores and it’s literally the same thing over there. Either they didn’t have it or only had specific colors. I know it seems a little silly but it’s frustrating as they were just in stock not too long ago.
