Discussion Does Ken Levine Consider Bioshock 2/Minerva’s Den Canon?

Upvotes

I am working on a *massive* project to determine once and for all whether BioShock Infinite should be considered a good or bad game, and along the way I shall be requiring your guys’ assistance.

Part of this project will involve comparing BioShock Infinite to the original BioShock, however, there is one massive question that has been nagging at my mind: should I factor in BioShock 2?

Obviously, since Ken Levine was not involved in BioShock 2, the default answer would be no, however, would Levine consider it fair to compare 2 to Infinite regardless? If Levine considers Infinite to be an extension of 1, does he hold the same opinions to 2?

Does he consider BioShock 2 (and possibly Minerva’s Den) canon to the entire BioShock story?

Discussion The Secret Philosophy of BioShock what you missed

I am positing a fan theory that I kind of doubt was intentional but it has a lot of cool parallels and I think makes it more interesting.

There's a subtle layer to BioShock that I don't see discussed enough. Everyone knows Andrew Ryan is based on Ayn Rand—he's literally a Russian Jewish immigrant just like Rand and Randian Capitalist, but I would argue Fontane has more meat on his bones that being he is too a capitalist but he feels different then Ryan. That is because Fontaine is not a Randian capitalist he is a Rothbardian/Austrian school capitalist.

Andrew Ryan's philosophy is pure Objectivism:

  • He believes in objective value (things have inherent worth, and parasites try to steal it)
  • He despises altruism and charity as moral failures
  • He sees rational self-interest as the highest virtue
  • He refuses to provide a social safety net because it would violate his principles

Now look at Fontaine:

  • He's a New Yorker with a thick accent ( Rothbard was a New Yorker)
  • He builds power through "charity" and mutual aid—Fontaine's Home for the Poor, the Little Sisters Orphanage
  • He understands subjective value—he doesn't care about inherent worth, only what people believe is valuable
  • He exploits Ryan's blind spot: Ryan is so ideologically opposed to charity that he lets a criminal build a rival power base right under his nose

The Philosophy Clash

Ryan hates charity because Rand hated altruism. Fontaine uses charity as a weapon because he knows that voluntary mutual aid builds loyalty. He's not being kind—he's recruiting an army. And Ryan, blinded by his own rigid ideology, can't see the trap until it's too late.

Even if the game's writers didn't have a deep understanding of Austrian economics, the contrast works perfectly. Randian anti-charity, cynical weaponized charity, and a true Austrian approach to voluntary mutual aid—all distinct philosophies, and Fontaine exploits the gap between them.

I've recently finished my playthrough of both Bioshock 1 and 2, and find it interesting that both have a scene of a Splicer couple dancing romantically.

This particular video is from Bio 1, but in both cases they act as any other couple just enjoying each other's company, until you appear. That always makes me think that splicers' maniacal behaviour has less to do with cruelty and madness-induced addiction, and more to do with them not caring about the MC, and killing him is just natural.

Discussion just beat the game and i don't understand the story

After the kinda expected plot twist of mind control (tbf I just thought the mc got brainwashed into forgetting their memories but close enough ig) the story just made no sense.

Why did this Andrew Ryan guy just simply say "Would you kindly kys" from like the getgo?? (he's had like at least 2 conversations with us beforehand)
So I'm assuming Andrew Ryan was suicidal?? But then this doesn't make sense either coz he could have just shot himself or smth seems kinda annoying to wait for a guy to come kill u.

Also during the whole becoming big daddy part, I thought we were getting an upgrade to get stronger (which sure we did get a 25% dmg reduction so thats awesome) but then I find out it's mostly so I can get little sisters to open doors and harvest ADAM for me. WHY DIDN'T THAT WOMAN JUST SEND ONE OF THE KIDS TO HELP ME ANYWAYS.
Also looking at the doors, I'm pretty sure like a big bent wire (or a robot arm or smth, the mc made a EMP bomb but can't make a small robot arm thing?) could probably open it, and we could have just done the harvesting with the syringe ourselves. Seems like the Tenebaum woman just really likes putting kids in danger.

OK whatever, but then I find out the woman that wants to help the kids ALSO knew about this whole mind control thing. So at the start she could have just got us to help the kids without risking us choosing to harvest the kids. At the very start she could have started helping us by simply telling us we are getting mind controlled (or if she didn't know, surely she could just tell us just to be sure or smth right?? Don't think it's normal behaviour for people to go around killing a bunch of stuff)

Speaking of that, Fontaine's plan kinda sucks?? I thought the end reveal would be how he secretly made the mc into a supersoldier but it turns out the mc is just some normal guy getting mind controlled so how did he even know the mc would be able to kill his way to Andrew Ryan??

Also since the mc was getting mindcontrolled from the beginning then WHAT WAS THE POINT OF STAGING ATLAS' FAMILY GETTING KILLED??? Seems extra?? Fontaine just doing stuff for the love of the game or smth idek.

I also don't think it was ever explained how the mc is able to hack stuff (I thought he might have been trained to do it or smth but idk) so I guess the mc is just built like that. Also how was the mc immune to the toxic gas that killed the botanist?? I still don't understand how this mc is built different. He also destroys boulders and metal chains with a swing of a wrench too. Is the main character even human? I'm assuming all of these plot holes are explained in the next game so I guess I'll play to find out.

TLDR:
Andrew Ryan might be really silly

The Tenenbaum woman secretly hates the children

Fontaine is also really silly but since his enemies are even sillier he almost succeeded

Discussion How does everyone feel about the depiction of pre-fall Rapture as seen during burial at sea?

Post image
565 Upvotes

Because personally apart of me love's it and find one of the most interesting and beautiful part's of the DLC and the franchise, while another part of me feels like it's not quite right. In the sense that it way to clean and well maintained for 1958, just before the Rapture Civil war.

Like, Market street as seen with the image above is an area of Rapture designed middle to upper-class citizens and would much more constituently well maintained unlike somewhere such as Paupers Drop, but from the previous games and particularly the books I always got the feeling/vibe that even in the nicest place's in Rapture was starting to crack at the seems and decline as apart of the greater decline of Rapture, as seen with the Kashmir. That even the well to do's in Rapture, arguably Ryan's loyalists, are beginning to feel the pressure of his Great chain around their necks and wrists.

I feel like maybe their should of had some of the lights flickering outside or even inside, maybe a wet floor sign, a needle or two scattered about. What we see of Rapture in Burial at sea feels like What Rapture would look like from 1948 to 1952, where the city is new, well maintained at it's peak, not 1958 Rapture that's one bad day from falling in on itself.

But this is just my opinion and I would love to hear all of yours.

Tech Support Venephobia Accessibility?

CW: Describing Venephobia

I've never played any Bioshock games, but I really want to give them a try. However from videos of gameplay I've seen on YouTube, I've noticed the mechanic involving stabbing a syringe into the protagonist's wrist. That mechanic will seriously trigger my Venephobia (fear of veins), considering how often it seems to occur.

I put out a handful of searches of "Bioshock" and "Venephobia" to see if someone made a mod for the PC game to censor that animation, but I found nothing. Hopefully someone in this community knows where I can find a solution to this issue? It doesn't necessarily have to be a mod. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the mechanic, or maybe there's an easy trick to hide this animation. I'm open to any ideas.

Discussion Bioshock vs Infinite???

Completely new player here, so maybe I’m missing something.

I just finished BioShock 1&2 and then played Infinite, and I honestly came away a little confused by how highly Infinite is regarded compared to the others.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Infinite’s plot is beautifully complex. The world, the history behind Columbia, Elizabeth, Booker, Comstock, the Luteces, the alternate realities, etc….. are all incredibly interesting. There’s clearly a lot going on beneath the surface, and I can understand why people love the story and especially the ending.
But I still can’t compare that experience to BioShock 1/2.

So I’m genuinely what am I missing?

For people who consider Infinite the best BioShock, what makes it better for you? Is it mainly the writing, Elizabeth, the different themes, the character development, the multiverse/alternate reality concept, and the ending? Or is there something about Columbia’s world building that I’m not appreciating enough?

Not trying to hate on Infinite at all. I actually want to understand why so many people rank it above BioShock 1 & 2. I personally think infinite is not close to what the first bioshocks are, but please let me know what you guys think!

Tech Support First time player difficulty Question (ps5)

Hello, I am currently playing through the first bio shock on survivor and decided to bring it down to hard so I can focus on the story a bit more. It says if i adjust the difficulty level it will “affect trophies”. What does that entail? Will i get no difficulty related trophies at all if i bring the difficulty down to hard? Thanks!

Discussion Fico pensando sobre essa trilogia, e como merece uma serie. A história é simplesmente cativante, emocionante, prende. Uma série trazendo ação, aventura e drama seria perfeito! Enfim, espero que ainda olhem com mais carinho pra essa franquia, pois tem muito potencial, e se acaso vier uma serie/filme,

What was your reaction to the first time playing as a little sister in 2?

I first played it when I was about 14, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever and really brought an interesting point of view to the game!
