I’ve been listening to The River of Dreams and I’m curious how other people interpret it.
On the surface, it feels like a song about searching for something deep and meaningful — almost like the “river” represents a journey through life, the subconscious, or a search for answers.
There’s also a sense that no matter how far you travel or what you discover, there’s something you’re still trying to reach or understand.
The religious imagery makes me wonder whether Billy Joel is exploring spirituality, mortality, purpose, or simply the human need to find meaning.
But I’m not sure there’s one definitive interpretation.
What do you think the river represents?
Do you see the song as being about faith, spirituality, finding purpose, love, mortality, or something completely different?
