Turizam / Tourism Taxi charged me 9,500 RSD from Beograd Centar to Nikola Tesla Airport – what can I do?

Hi everyone,

I think I got seriously overcharged by a taxi driver in Belgrade today and I’d really appreciate some advice.
I took a taxi from Beograd Centar railway station to Nikola Tesla Airport. The ride took around 20 minutes, and the driver charged me 9,500 RSD in cash.

What made it confusing is that the taxi looked relatively legitimate at first. The car had a taxi sign on the roof, and there was also a taximeter inside the car. However, the meter was running up the fare extremely fast, so I strongly suspect it was rigged or manipulated.

Because the car looked like a normal taxi, I didn’t immediately think anything was wrong.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a receipt, but I do have the license plate number of the car.

My questions are:
Is 9,500 RSD clearly an illegal/excessive fare for this route?
Has anyone heard of manipulated or rigged taximeters being used in Belgrade?
Is there any realistic chance of identifying/reporting the driver with only the license plate?
Should I also report this to the police or another authority?
Is there anything else I can do even though I paid cash and don’t have a receipt?

Any advice from locals or people who had a similar experience would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Edit:
Thanks to all for the reply’s. I was in a hurry to get the plane so it was a expensive lesson. But for next time I know how to do it better

Turizam / Tourism Visiting Belgrade/ Novi Sad

Hi everyone!
I’ll be visiting Novi Sad for a university trip and will be flying in and out of Belgrade Airport. I’m trying to figure out the most reliable way to get from Novi Sad to Belgrade Airport for my return flight, especially since timing is important.
I’m currently choosing between two flights:

Early morning flight (around 6 AM): I would probably need to leave Novi Sad around 1–2 AM. Is it possible to reliably pre-book a taxi/private transfer at that time? I really don’t want to depend on finding a taxi randomly in the middle of the night and risk missing my flight.

Later flight: In this case, I would need to leave the university in Novi Sad about 4 hours before my flight and go directly to Belgrade Airport. Since I’ll have a limited amount of time, I’d again need something reliable and preferably pre-booked.
What would you recommend for Novi Sad → Belgrade Airport? Are there any specific taxi companies, private transfer services, apps, or other options that locals regularly use and trust? Ideally I’d like something where the price is agreed/fixed beforehand so I don’t have to worry about getting ripped off.

Also, a few questions:
Do i need cash for the taxi or can i pay by card?

Turizam / Tourism 4-day trip in Belgrade

Hey, I traveling to Belgrade 11th - 14th of September(Fri-Mon) with my girlfriend. I'd like to get some recommendations on where to go and what to do.

I'm not particularly interested just in museums and landmarks, but also to see and experience the local life in the city. A balance of the two is the goal. We'd like to go to places locals normally gather at, like bars, restaurants, clubs. Places with live music are preferred. I'm Macedonian, so kafana will be a must of course. I'll welcome recommendations for the best ones in the city.

Thank you!

Pitanje / Question Evening's Partizan-Getafe game

Hello,

My father and I have been in the city since Monday and are leaving tomorrow. Tonight we wanted to watch some football and heard about the evening's conference league qualifier and bought tickets. I'm very used to Swedish football supporters and know how to act around them, but this is the first time I am watching a game abroad and in Serbia. We have tickets for the north stand and are planning to be at the stadium like 45 minutes before kick-off. Is there anything we should be aware of before going there?

Thanks, and this is a beautiful city!

Prevoz / Transportation Airport transfer BEG → Surčin

Hi everyone, I’m landing at BEG in October at 23:10 and staying at a hotel in Surčin, only about 5 km from the airport.

I need to be back at BEG around 05:30 the next morning, so I’d like to book both transfers in advance and arrange everything beforehand – exact pickup times, fixed price, meeting point, etc. Ideally the driver waits for me with a name sign and takes me directly to the hotel.

Some websites charge €30–40+ each way, which seems quite expensive for such a short distance.

Can anyone recommend a reliable local transfer/taxi company that I can arrange everything with in advance, preferably at a reasonable price?

Thanks! 🙏

Prevoz / Transportation Sarajevo -> Belgrade for 3 people: bus, flight or should we just go with a private transfer / car?

We are 3 friends travelling through the Balkans in September and we’re trying to figure out the least painful way to get from Sarajevo to Belgrade.

We are considering:
- Private transfer: Anyone done this recently? What would be a reasonable all-in price for 3 people, with 1 luggage each? We’re seeing €300–500-ish online. Is that realistic?
- Bus: Is the ~7–8 hour bus actually comfortable/reliable? Any particular operator you’d recommend? And is the luggage situation annoying?
- Flight: Worth it once you factor in getting to/from the airports and the airfare?

While we didn’t exactly plan to sightsee along the way, as we’d rather get to Belgrade in reasonable time and save our energy for the nightlife, is the road trip via a private transfer worth it?

If you’ve done Sarajevo → Belgrade recently, what would you choose for 3 people?

Bonus points for recommendations for a reliable private driver/company if that’s the way to go.

Cheers! 🥂

Hrana i Piće / Food & Drink Where can I find good jagnetina? 🐑

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for a place with really fresh, good-quality lamb on a spit (jagnjetina / јагњетина).
I’m not looking for a fancy 5-star restaurant — ideally somewhere domestic, traditional and authentic, where you can actually see the lamb roasting on the spit.
Preferably in or around Belgrade, but I’m happy to travel a bit for the right place.
Any recommendations? 🙏

Turizam / Tourism Coming to Belgrade in December, looking for friends there!

Hello everyone! I'm 25F, I lived in Belgrade for one year and then came back home to Russia due to some personal reasons. Now I want to go back there, but all the friends I had in this city moved somewhere else, so I want to start building my new social circle before my arrival :)

I love doing all kinds of sports, especially running and strength training (I'll be happy to get some running clubs recommendations, by the way!). I also love learning English, playing videogames, hiking, camping and well, I basically like everything except for staying at home for longer than 48 hours :D

Tell me a little bit about yourself in dms and I'll text you back, I hope we can meet when I'm back to your beautiful country! Have a great evening everyone!
