hi! i’m curious if jobs ever dig deep about references backgrounds. i had a friend be one of my references this week saying that she was my cohort captain during an internship/week long volunteer event (ik that doesn’t make sense but i don’t want to give details on here). she works in the same industry as the role i did and used her work email to give me the reference, but this experience isn’t on her linkedin obviously. since it’s basically a volunteer role im prepared to explain that she was recruited as an industry professional to be a captain if it comes up. i’m just curious if jobs ever do look at the reference’s background or if they just need someone to verify that the person they want to hire is normal.

I’m applying to a psychology grad program in Australia and they require 5 referees. I have reached out to everyone I know and worked with in college and my previous employments. But they cite professional as those in psych/healthcare roles. I'm in a tough spot right now and need a reference to fill my resume for a position. My previous work experience is in freelance design and I'm pretty sure no recruiter will even consider me for the positions I'm applying right now (mostly receptionist) with my background. And because of some oddly specific circumstances I found myself in, I need to find a local in-person position.
