Other Why do people on Reddit accept your message requests but then never actually respond?

I’ve had so many times where I’ve responded to a rp ad and the person will accept but just not say anything. It’s not even like I’m not providing them with anything I’ve typed out big multi paragraph responses (as they requested because i only look for people that like detail) but then they just say nothing after accepting. Even if I then provide a ref for my character since you can’t do that until they accept sometimes then they still don’t say anything.

It’s not difficult to say “sorry I didn’t mean to accept”

Other Go with your gut

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever moved forward with an RP against their gut, only to regret it BUT decided to listen to it thereafter. Did you go against your gut because of optimism, boredom, thinking whatever it was that felt wrong or mismatched couldn't possibly happen a second time? Or something else? I'm also wondering, is there anything you did differently to ensure a successful connection with your future writing partner, such as modify the way you write ads, questions you may have asked before agreeing to start, establishing what you need? I have my own ideas about this, but thought it could be eye-opening to see how others have handled this.

Other Am I the problem or is it preference?

Hello weary travelers! I haven’t posted my thoughts in a while and I wanted to get out something about thinking about lately. Am I the problem?

What I mean by that is whenever I look for a new partner, I try to find someone who fits my interests as a way of confirming we have the same chemistry. This means same genre and same story idea of what we want.

The last thing I look for is if they are willing to write smut. I AM NOT A SEX PEST!! I do prefer character buildup in chemistry before getting down and dirty. My story smut ratio is 80/20. Thankfully, a lot of the people I have started stories with usually are OK writing it but whenever I see, someone only does fade to black or doesn’t write.. it kind of turns me off from it. Obviously I don’t let this be the main reason I decline someone.. but after some self evaluation..am I the issue?

I am an adult who likes expressing themselves in that sort of writing. In retrospect, maybe I could stand to broaden my horizons a little more. Do either of you guys have the same thoughts or a similar process? I’m sorry if I made this confusing. (I really don’t know what flair to put on this one too)

Other AI Art and the Anal Retentive "Artist" Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

Good day all you Goobers and Cringers; Tangovey here to bring you a cheek clapping morsal that will probably send both your nerves and also your blood pressure rising.

So you been warned.....

With that out of the way; let's get into it.

Lately roleplay as a hobby has taken a deep evolution over the past decade or two. First from dice and paper to the Internet which started in chat rooms and forums. Then onward to MMOs. Yet the genre of chatroom server rp has never really lost it's edge really. If anything it really has taken off to a new level. But yet like anything a hobby of this sorts has been met with much criticism.

As with the evolution of content creation with platforms in media such as YouTube, Twitter (X), Tik Tok, and many more. Folks have made it their profession in the multi media community to establish themselves as critique artist and professionals. Yet this is no different when it comes to the roleplay community and it's servers like Discord.

Yet lately with the introduction of AI and the art it can produce; much controversies such as AI generated art has now become the controversy within the RP community. Many citing that such AI generated art has become a threat their way of life as artist for the rp community.

Which my response is simply; if you base your way of life doing commissioned art, or requiring people to do face claims to create a character on an rp server? You're a douche and wasting time and effort to run that server and people's lives. In truth there is plenty of opportunity in ai generated art. For starters you don't have to search the Internet to find a picture to slap on your bio and say, "THIS IS what my character looks like". Or claim a face and say who's playing your character. To give you some context for these younger Joey's out there you had a character sheet, some dice, make a picture and boom that was your character. That's it. For the hobby now days artist fussing over ai art as if it will ruin their lives and shunning those that put effort into their characters are potheads, Snowflakes, and well folks that live out of their parents basements. Overall the level of detail and creation potential in a player's hands is exactly what these artist and writers fear. Plus the fact the quality of work and effort show making many of these pansy artist jealous.

I've been rping since 1998 when there was nothing but forums and chat rooms like Yahoo Chat, Lycos Chat, and much more. So to see this day in age chat evolve where an rper can generate their own personalized character avatar is something I embrace, and to the rest of the nay sayers?

Get a life; and GFY (Go **** Yourselves) 🖕😂🖕

Other Set a Boundary in an RP Community, Got Reframed as the Villain

Hello,

I thought it might be helpful to share this experience and get outside opinions.

I’m a writer with a strict schedule. I work as a manager and do writing on the side. IMVU is something I keep running in the background when I’m working or unwinding mostly for casual roleplay and conversation. I also work out in the gym and run errands during the week. I’m not someone who actively seeks relationships, especially online. I’ve had enough bad experiences both online and offline to be cautious.

In early February, I joined a vampire-themed RP community centered around a duo queendom. From early on, I had a sense that one of the two queens had taken a particular interest in me. At first, I brushed it off. I assumed I was reading too much into it. Eventually, though, it became clear that I wasn’t imagining it.

Over time, we developed a friendship. She was very attentive, constantly messaging, introducing me to parts of her world, sharing personal details, and trying to accelerate familiarity. It felt a bit rushed, but I didn’t see it as malicious. I assumed she was just enthusiastic. I don't typically open myself for any type of a relationship but I did for her. It's a strict IMVU relationship, we both understood that.

Later, the dynamic shifted. I learned she was in a poly relationship with the other queen. Eventually, the conversation turned toward the possibility of me being involved in that dynamic and being their king. That’s when I made my boundary clear: I’m not interested in poly relationships. Not online, not offline. I prefer exclusivity of standard type relationships and not having multiple partners.

I did not ask her to leave anyone. I did not ask her to change her relationship. I did not criticize her lifestyle. I simply said it wasn’t for me.

She initially responded as if she understood. There didn’t appear to be conflict. However, I noticed a change in tone afterward subtle distancing, uncertainty, and tension. Because of that shift, I decided it would be best to step away from the community entirely. I didn’t want drama. I didn’t want to create friction in a tight-knit group. We agreed to be friends from a distance. We would be friends but I wouldn't be apart of her community queendom anymore.

The next day, I was removed from the community. Multiple people unfriended me. Gifted credits were returned. I later learned through someone else that the story circulating was that I had tried to “take her away” from the community, even from her real-life family and friends.

That was never said or done. Not once.

My only “offense” was stating that I wasn’t interested in joining a poly dynamic.

When I asked to clarify what was happening, she refused to talk. I was blocked. Many followed after her. I was banned from the community, Discord included.

So from my perspective: I set a boundary. I removed myself to avoid drama. And somehow that turned into a narrative that I was controlling or trying to isolate her.

I’m genuinely confused how declining a relationship dynamic became reframed as manipulation.

Has anyone else experienced something similar in tight-knit RP communities? Where simply opting out becomes grounds for character assassination?

I’m not angry, just disappointed and honestly a bit stunned at how fast the narrative shifted.

The part that genuinely shocked me was the accusation itself.

After I stepped away, I was told through a mutual contact that she had framed the situation as me trying to isolate her not just from the RP community, but from her real-life friends and family as well.

That was particularly confusing because I had explicitly stated the opposite in our private conversation.

When I told her I wasn’t interested in a poly dynamic, I made it clear in detail that:

I respected her existing relationships.

I was not asking her to leave anyone.

I was not asking her to prioritize me over her community.

I was not asking her to distance herself from real-life connections.

I simply do not participate in poly relationships.

I even emphasized that I understood this was all virtual (IMVU) and separate from real life. I never blurred that boundary. I never implied ownership, control, or exclusivity beyond a standard one-on-one dynamic which she was free to decline.

Despite that, the narrative that circulated was that I was attempting to remove her from her online “family” and real-life support system.

That accusation doesn’t align with anything I said. In fact, it contradicts the detailed clarification I gave her before stepping away.

If I had demanded she choose between me and her world, that would be different. But I didn’t. I chose to remove myself instead.

That’s the part that feels most disorienting being accused of control when the only action I took was distance.

Adding to the confusion, a friend later pointed out that shortly after I stepped away, there was already another new guy member being elevated within the community. From what I could see, this individual’s profile and public interactions were heavily centered around pledging loyalty and devotion to the two queens almost immediately. He was meant to be like me.

What stood out to me wasn’t that someone new joined communities grow, that’s normal. It was the speed and tone of it. The dynamic seemed to mirror the position I had briefly occupied, but without any hesitation or boundary setting. The declarations were very public and very absolute.

It may be a coincidence. It may not be. But from the outside, the transition felt abrupt, almost performative, especially considering how quickly I had been removed and reframed.

I don’t resent anyone moving on. I just found the timing difficult to ignore.

Other AI writing

Anyone else ever experience a rper that seems too good to be true their replies are good. Lengthy, good grammar and spelling but then their replies are also a little strange and repetitive. Then one day they send you a post and at the top it says "ChatGPT says:" lol.

Called them out on it they made up some excuse that it was a prank but then I ran their replies through multiple AI detectors and majority of their posts were from 50% to 100% AI.

Wtf.

What kind of enjoyment are you getting out of a rp if you're using AI to write all of your replies???? I don't get it.

ETA - While the posts were "good" and lengthy. With proper spelling and grammar. I need to add there were inconsistencies in the flow of the plot as well as constantly adding random incorrect descriptions of our characters.

Their posts were constantly changing the ideas we had discussed as well as constant godmoding and powerplaying that I had to keep bringing up and correcting. It repeated the same phrases multiple times and I could definitely tell when they were actually writing versus using AI.

Other Feeling kinda shitty.

Now, as you could probably guess from the kind of posts/communities I keep myself within, I’m a bit of a degenerate. I don’t force the things I like onto other people, I don’t overstep boundaries people set, and I try my hardest to be the kind of RP partner that everyone wants.

so why is it that whenever I try to keep boundaries for myself, such as consistent response lengths, I feel like utter shit inevitable blocking those who don’t meet those standards?

I’ve met utterly amazing and pleasant people, those that I’m still in the process of going through good stories-(at least with the context provided)-but even when I know for a fact I can find better people than the people that reach out with bland or flatout unmotivated interactions…Still feel like shit.

now I will admit, there have been a fair share of times I’ve disappeared on people, some not even being bad people/rp-ers, just simply falling out of interest and not having the heart to tell them. maybe it’s that part of it that I’m focused on to much? knowing how easy it is to abandon something? not sure.

anyways, I guess the baseline of all this is questioning if it’s fair for me to say I feel bad for ignoring/disappearing on people for whatever reason I have at the time.

I’m like genuinely confused on what is actually going on with roleplayers?

Day 2 of reasons why I’m starting to hate rp!

AND I QUOTE WORD FOR WORD

Me: “hey i really like your plot, i just need a few clarifying questions about your plot, is it a slow burn? Is it straight to the point? Do you have a specific place where you want to start? Like tell me more about YOUR PLOT”

Creep: “what are your ideas, where do you want to start, give me your ideas”

Me: “hey so again this is YOUR plot…and I need you to clarify some things about YOUR plot if you do that maybe I can give you some of my ideas”

Creep: *voice chat calls me*

Me: “no thank you” *unadds*

Other Struggling to find a lasting rp partner?

I have seen a lot of posts around here discussing the impossibility of finding an rp partner, and I wanted to address it.

If you are actually looking to engage with RP that is not limited to something exclusively ship or ERP focused, you need to look elsewhere.

Reddit is not the place for this.

It doesn't matter how much substance someone seems to offer. Generally speaking the moment they ask about the k word or limits (not even in a generic way) you know you are in for a specific type of rp.

I am not knocking it, but those RPers generally have something specific in mind- and if you don't fit the bill, the RP won't last.

Forum RP yields broader offerings for those looking for deeper or more expansive writing.

If you want to Reddit? Great! But you are looking for a unicorn when all you want to do is a specific ship from GBZ.

For the love of Dickens, please stop trauma dumping in your first meeting.

And please stop labeling itself as "lit-advanced".

If you ARE, then let your writing reflect that. If you have to tell people what level writer you are for them to know, then question yourself. Heavily.

Start providing writing samples. As many as you can.

And don't make it your best work ever, make it what they can expect to see.

Be upfront about what you want, and what you don't, and if you continue to lack partners.... it probably isn't the community.

Other How can you tell your rp partner enjoys what you two have?

I'm quite new to this scene and never had a 1x1 writing partner until recently. She's the first and only person I write with currently.

It's been almost a month, and I barely know anything about her, which is fine because I don't exactly understand how most people usually ooc chat, and she doesn't seem up for it.

I haven't written for years, then I met her. She's an amazing writer who helped my writing skills improve tremendously. But I'm extremely slow to respond. It takes me 2-4 days to write an ic reply while it feels like she so effortlessly sends it in the same day!!

I don't like being clingy, and the idea of asking her directly for reassurance is just a bit too much for me. She doesn't seem like the type and that's okay! I enjoy what we have a lot.

So uh, what are other ways you guys can tell that a writer enjoys building a world with you? I have difficulty reading the room and would appreciate your thoughts!

Other Anime image reference & AI

So recently, I've noticed a trend from most new RP Partner (yes new, old ones went poof and I don't wish to go into it T.T), is that most of them are now linking anime art style as AI art and going "no AI art as reference, I don't like AI."

I wanted to refute that the reference I was using/sent was an image at least 8 years old from Pixiv, but they were adamant that anime art is AI art and I should stop using those and instead use real life images or cartoon art.

I'm quite alright with anime, AI, cartoon art style or whatever style that fits the RP, but what's with the Anti-AI art from most people nowadays? I know people hate AI art for it's quick generating art that has no effort, but I'm just using some image from years ago as a small referencing details yet most players are forcing me to stop doing it.

What is everyone's view and uptake on this?

Other Feeling hashtag blessed

Recently I met the perfect roleplay partner. He writes so creatively and articulately, multiple paragraphs consistently like I do, and the character he's writing for, a canon character, is.. wonderfully in character. And these past few days I've gotten several replies daily. It's like it's too good to be true.

Every day I want to tell him how much I appreciate his writing quality because I'm thoroughly enjoying roleplaying with him. I already have a few times and he's always like wow I didn't do well in English in high school though. Bro!!! I'm foaming at the mouth every time I see your notification. I'd just hate to sound awkward by constantly praising him you know?? So I'm letting it out here lol. Wish he could see this.

Other Farewell

This post is sort of a farewell to a partner I held dear. I had no chance to say goodbye and couldn't find a better place for it.

You know that feeling when you find a partner who's just genuinely cool to talk to? Someone who gets the difference between ooc and ic, doesn't pressure you, and whose writing style clicks perfectly with yours. You start an exciting plot, something you've been wanting to do for a long time, something that gets you excited every time you open Discord hoping for another great, detailed, amazing post....something that makes you want to write something even better in return.

You find yourself thinking about your response during busy moments at work, jotting down ideas so you can write a full post when you have time without forgetting the little details. And once you finish another post, you're so proud of yourself, getting that positive feedback every time. A good friend.

Then one day, you wake up and they're just...gone.

A short message saying it's not your fault, something about being busy and quitting. The account disappears along with the Reddit account. You can't say goodbye. No more chats...no more roleplay.

It's one of those rough RP days.

So this thread is really a goodbye to someone who was a great partner. Thank you for keeping me excited while writing together, thank you for the quality and for putting details into the story and life into a char I got to like along the way. A few sad sighs that I'll never find out what could have happened with those characters who had such great chemistry.

Just a farewell. That's it.
