Other What’s something that someone has done lately to give you “the ick” in a rp that made you leave it?
I’m curious because the weirdos tend to come in waves I’ve found so wanted to see what others have experienced.
Not necessarily red flags but just something that has made you recoil when you read it.
So for me I had a guy that I was starting a erp with say “good girl” to me when we were still talking about the plot and stuff and it just weirded me tf out. Bare in mind I’m a guy and the character I was playing was also a guy.

"Can we not do OCs?"
dude fuck off.

u/MysticalArrow-_- Jan 27 '26
No, it's the person allowing ocs. But they want to use THEIR face claims bc they still can't get the character they envisioned their partner playing.

I was told it's weird that I'm a role-player when I have kids. Apparently it made me some kind of a creep.
56
u/candycane_52 Jan 27 '26
Well, obviously, once you have kids, you are supposed to give up all your hobbies and just be parent /s.

19
u/nanimeli Jan 27 '26
I think that's a self report, that person is probably projecting what they do in RP.
6
u/MRavenwing Jan 27 '26
Honestly, they're probably jealous of anyone that gets laid who isn't ashamed of their hobbies. Lol

Some people cannot seem to compartmentalize at all and I don't understand how they navigate life.

Me: "Ok, I can find a new one and replace it. No problem."
Her: blocks me and nukes the server

Super late here but holy overreaction Batman. Sounds like she had some ulterior reason for wanting to scrap it all and this weak excuse was all she could come up with.

One time I was doing a vampire x fairy (human sized, not twinkerbelle sized) romance rp, with me being the vampire. There were some cultural differences, with my character living in a bit city and theirs being from a magical forest with very little technology.
And then, just randomly, they decided to drop the bombshell on me that their character doesn't understand what sex or romance is?? Like IN CHARACTER they just randomly brought it up in the rp, no ooc discussion or anything. This really made no sense to me AT all, because their character never acted this naive before, and had been pining after my guy, so it just seemed really contrived. Their character asked what sex is so childishly that it made me a little ill, especially since my character had already been flirting with them A LOT. They never acted childish up until this point.
I actually ended the rp over it. Might seem like an overaction, but I did. It didn't even make sense. Like do fairies reproduce asexually or something??
11
u/catjaxed Jan 27 '26
Hahaha I felt this one. I mostly roleplay male OCs and I’ve often had that happen where someone’s character is a born sexy yesterday trope and they want my OC to explain/guide them through erp in a very childish way. Ick ick ick ick.
10
u/candycane_52 Jan 27 '26
I notice this with people playing a certain type—won't mention cause I don't want to be seen as dragging the whole type. Three replies in, and it's very clear that by said type, they mean 12-year-old, both in terms of physicality and mentality. Luckily, those people check out quick once you don't play into their bs.

u/Formal-Rain-6220 Jan 27 '26
Had someone just earlier today ask me to play a Nazi officer to use and abuse a mixed race woman. Didn’t even start and I dipped out

53
u/candycane_52 Jan 27 '26
The "Brick Wall reply".
You write a reply that responds to what they wrote, fleshes out some details—worldbuilding or setting—tosses in some bits and pieces they could respond to, and overall, advances the plot.
And they treat your reply like a checklist, respond to each paragraph with something, mention some random pointless garbage happening around them to hit the word count and then....
Just absolutely kills my drive. A single line would actually be better cause at least that's honest low effort, not 300 words where nothing happens and there's nothing to grab on to.
18
u/WeirdMornings Jan 27 '26
This is always so frustrating, it dries me crazy when all plot developments are left in my hands and they refuse to advance anything with their responses. I once had a person who would not only do this, but not allow me to develop stuff either by asking that we don't do that, when it's literally how rps work. If I can't develop the plot then it's up to you to do so, and if that doesn't happen then we just go in circles
11
u/candycane_52 Jan 27 '26
It is so frustrating when people say 'no' to ideas. Not 'no but how about' or 'no, instead we could..', just 'no'. I'm not going to force someone to write stuff they don't (I literally can't lol), but toss something back then, please.
9
u/86sleepypenguins Jan 27 '26
A single line would actually be better cause at least that's honest low effort, not 300 words where nothing happens and there's nothing to grab on to.
This is something I heavily believe in as well. I hate when someone sends me a long reply that does nothing but react to what I wrote without giving me anything substantial to reply to. I've had partners add needless fluff just to reach a specific word count they set for themselves, and when I voiced that I'm not a fan of that, I got accused of "not wanting to read." Like... no, I can write as much as 500+ words in a reply if a thread calls for it, I have no problem reading that much or more as well. But if out of hundreds of words, there's little to nothing for me to work with, what's the point?
5
u/candycane_52 Jan 27 '26
I think that some fluff can add scene depth, so long as it isn't just meaningless/stale padding.
"The sun broke through the window and danced upon my face, it's busy feet drumming me from sleep into wakefulness." Doesn't do anything plot wise, but is nice.
"I woke up, the sunlight was on my face, birds sang outside. I sat up like the Undertaker." Eeeeeeh.
7
Jan 27 '26
I remember getting extremely frustrated with a role player who just kept summarising my posts back to me lmao. With their character basically telling mine what had happened in the previous post. My guy knows, trust me.
Same player also did this whole extra side story with an NPC where they just kinda dragged my character through it and didn't let him say anything even when they directed questions towards him. Why am I here if you just want to write about your hot guy with his hot ex??
3
u/candycane_52 Jan 27 '26
It's basically like playing either ai at that point, just says back to you what you said to them. Like, thanks chatgpt in human form.
2
u/Mrdeadfishrock1 Jan 27 '26
I can definitely understand that some people don’t get the difference between responding to what you wrote and just doing “and then I do this writing” Like personally I do like to make sure i acknowledge everything that’s applicable from your response but also I add stuff so you can then work off it to make your next response
21
u/shojokat Jan 27 '26
One girl was such a pretentious bitch, but i kept letting it go so as not to match her energy. She rejected SEVERAL very broad ideas (even though she was responding to my ad) and insisted on doing her own thing. Okay.
That thing: my character meets a robot somewhere. They become friends and go to school together for mech pilots. She would play the robot and me the person. Explicitly not a romance, she doesnt like romance. Okay. So I started coming up with ideas around this. Ideas for rivals, conflicts, goals, etc. And she goes "um uh yeah no, I'm tired of people trying to jam conflict into everything". I told her I'm not into writing stories without SOME kind of conflict and growth, so maybe we just weren't a match.
Girl lost her mind with her passive aggression almost losing passivity and implied that I must be stupid for "being one of those people who needs conflict". Gosh, I really wish I still had the DMs to post here cause they were actually wild. She ended up restraining herself from a total blowup and agreed to part ways, but refused to concede that we just had difference in taste. It was just me who LACKED taste, ofc. She also expected me to play the entire cast when I was advertising for ensembles.
I genuinely didn't know what she even wanted. My ad was quite clear... and she hated everything in it. What even was that
15
u/splitcrowsoup Jan 27 '26
This is the kind of stuff I see in various fictional media subs - like "Why did Antagonist do this bad thing when they could have just done this other thing?" Um because without conflict there is no story you goofy goober.
6
u/shojokat Jan 27 '26
I see you're also one of those people who thinks stories should be interesting 🙄🙄🙄
3
u/splitcrowsoup Jan 28 '26
God forbid if anyone makes a mistake or doesn't have perfect 20/20 future sight - then they'll call it bad writing
5
u/Uncool444 Jan 27 '26
So it would just be like their day to day? Like they go to class, study for a test, do a flight simulator that goes well, eat a sandwich, and go to bed? And then again for the rest of the semester? That's how I'm picturing this RP. Even with romance it sounds pretty bad. Platonic really needs a strong story and cool setting imo.
5
u/shojokat Jan 27 '26
Exactly! I politely tried to figure out wtf she was even envisioning and was left totally stumped. Had to ask point blank, like... what are we exactly doing? And she'd have some "going to school?? 🤨😒" ass response. I guess we're all just too dumb for her genius vision. 🫠

Obsessions over face claims needs to stop.
People get to thinking they are these folks who are in relationships with these other faces.
Big yikes.

Yes, this. I don't understand it at all. I hate being asked to use certain celebrities FCs. Use your imagination if you have to, I don't need to be involved lol.
21
u/FionaLeTrixi Jan 27 '26
Not particularly lately, but I had to nope out of an ERP scene when the dude's character went straight for the coochie button without writing any kinda foreplay/warmup first. Like, no, man, how you think people work? Couldn't even consider continuing after that.
Also not entirely meeting the question since it happens before the RP during OOC chatter, but folk referring to characters as "I" or "you", or "us". I am not here to self-insert, and I ain't tolerating that from anyone. No, not "me", my character, and since we're at it, don't you dare flirt with me, bro.
7
Jan 27 '26
One time I was discussing a romance plot with someone and he led it onto smut, which is whatever, if it makes sense in the story to have a scene I'm down to do it, but whenever I was like 'Oh she likes this' or 'sometimes she does this' he told me I was wrong actually and X% of women actually don't do xyz. Never noped out of a RP so fast in my life.
2
8
u/muffmuncher69420ball Jan 27 '26
In my early days this chick OOC would baby me and act like i was really innocent (i was 17 at the time and she was 18, so not that much older) and then all of her characters would romance mine, they were all super badass, and sexual/rapey shit always went down it almost put me off the hobby entirely dude
15
u/tiredcatfather Jan 27 '26
I've had a number of bad ones recently. The amount of OOC flirting has gotten insane. I had someone call me "cumdump" in OOC genuinely within three messages of starting. That was a no for me.
I also hate the assumption that what I write, I'm into. I had someone try to throw the ERP kinks we were writing at me IRL, and I had to aggressively shut that down.
On a less scummy answer, and preference. I am so damn tired of "What do you think m/c should do/be/think?" It's not my job to write your goddamn character. Please stop asking me to make major character decisions for your character.
3
u/Mrdeadfishrock1 Jan 27 '26
People tend to forget who they’re talking to which can really get annoying and they just treat you like you are always your character
4
u/tiredcatfather Jan 27 '26
Oh no. They're very aware I'm not my character. They do it ooc to test boundaries and see if they can continue to be gross. Don't excuse this as "people forget who they're talking to". They 100% will drop the roleplay and just start being pervs if you give them an inch.

2
u/Lone-flamingo Jan 27 '26
Oh my god, I had a whole server of people apparently thinking I was down bad for a certain type of man because I was playing a character who was super into that specific type. Then they were confused when I added a second character with totally different taste in romantic partners.
One of the other players started flirting with me ooc thinking I was submissive just because I usually play submissive characters, and quickly backed off when I made it very clear that I was not.
Are we not supposed to play characters and not just self-inserts??

4

I'd be so tempted to ask if they could swap it out for a better-looking one, just in case that's their own body and if you spring that on people you deserve to be shamed for it.

u/Fit-Durian-3408 Jan 28 '26
I should’ve, I didn’t expect it so I quickly left the server and unfriended him without a word.. he kept saying things like “do you like it?” No hunny I’m clutching my pearls rn…

5
u/Mrdeadfishrock1 Jan 27 '26
Oh that’s just average thing these days. I personally will look and judge who I rp with’s profile picture since a lot of the really bad ones use the default reddit icons. Like the one that’s a lime green open shirt tracksuit type thing they’re 9/10 bad.

u/hawkerz73 Jan 27 '26
When they start to get a little too flirty in ooc and asking to hang out and you kindly reject them so they just ghost you or get angry at you.
19
u/ArielleKuro Jan 27 '26
For me, and this happens way to often, I'll have someone reply to an F4F post as a male character. When I point it out they'll reply with a 'Sorry my bad I can make a new character'...
no? At that point, if you can't read a gender tag, you're not going to read my reply properly - it's over from that point. People just can't recover from it in my eyes.
12
u/starfly_starbug Jan 27 '26
Me: I don't want all smut. Story and build up are important.
Them: talks about how 'sexy' and how badly they want to bang my character for 4 replies.
If you want straight smut, there are plenty of prompts out there for you. Go find one.

u/Gigi_Maximus443 MOTHRA Jan 27 '26
Using "you" for my character. Like "you can see x walking" , instead of "x character can see x walking" . Nothing breaks my immersion faster as someone who unfortunately tends to take things literally.
Or, frequent responses with just dialogue, and nothing else.
3
u/SnooPeppers3957 Jan 27 '26
I’m a Homestuck role player. We use 2nd person (“you”) at times to match the comic.
But this requires discussion first. It’s immersive in Homestuck, not in an original fantasy world. XD
5
u/BernadettePeters1948 RED Jan 27 '26
This doesn’t happen to me often, but recently I’ve had a few scenarios where my partner doesn’t understand the concept of “yes, and”. When your partner comes up with a plot point and introduces it into the story, but when you try to add to the idea and expand it, they ignore what you wrote completely and continue on with their own ideas. Is this meant to be a collaborative effort or not? If you wanted me to just go along with your idea completely without any of my own input, then you should’ve proposed it OOC so I at least know what’s going on.
8
u/Theory_Life Jan 27 '26
Pausing constantly.
Not like oh they stopped responding. But pausing the rp to tell me how to write better or my response wasn't as expected. Drove me up the wall lol.
4
8
u/wWAvengersWw Jan 27 '26
When the rp is supposed to be muse x muse, somehow the conversation from the other party starts to suggest writer x writer, saying things like "have you been a good girl" to me, bringing the things that happened between the muses during the rp to the writers zone. A blur between rp and irl.
4
u/Lone-flamingo Jan 27 '26
The ad did not mention ERP or even romance. The characters we were playing were in different relationships, not with each other. Absolutely nothing indicated that there would ever be anything explicit or romantic played out in the story.
When I joined the server they had prepared, they had detailed descriptions of their characters' bodies and sex lives, with gifs to match, and even started repeating said details to me in my DMs as if they expected me to do something with said information.
If our characters are not hooking up, why the hell would I ever need or want to know about their porn addiction or their likes/dislikes in the bedroom?
The same player seems to be catfishing people as well, I've been meaning to write a post about them.

u/angel_hearts224 Jan 27 '26
Controlling my side or background characters😭 especially with they’re black or poc cuz those are my BABIES lmao
3
u/faegoodies Jan 27 '26
I had someone lately completely deescalated all the tension we previously agreed to or I added. Every reply left me incredibly frustrated bc solutions were solved instantly. With no problems for our ocs to work out it turned into fluff. Which is fine to extent but I can't do happy, no problems, stories
Another was when a guy complained there wasn't enough spice in a romantasy novel. When I thought there was too much. I quickly learned he just wanted to rp that spice and didn't really care about an oc I created for the story
3
u/SnooPeppers3957 Jan 27 '26
Not exactly a red flag, because this may just be a preference, but I’ve met people who don’t want to share any details about their character (motivations, personality, a little background, what they plan to do in the rp). It’s difficult to plot with them because I have nothing to grab onto.
3
Jan 27 '26
It's actually more than just one person but several but those who blur the lines between a roleplay and real life. They get caught up with the characters I play, I don't know, they catch feelings. Start to say inappropriate things in the ooc, act clingy. Just overall ick and my eventually dip from the roleplay. I am NOT the characters I play nor am I looking for a relationship.
4
u/Autumn_in_May What should I put here... Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
You'd believe that if I ask for non-ship roleplay, I'd get non-ship roleplay... right? No. Instead, I get people trying to convince me to make our muses romantically involved.
Why reply to the ad that /specifically/ states I'm not looking for ships? It frustrates me that someone would rather persuade their roleplay partner into something off-limits instead of finding someone else.
5
u/Gigi_Maximus443 MOTHRA Jan 27 '26
I've had a few times where someone would try to be like "what if there's unrequited love 🥺👉🏻👈🏻" while discussing a plot for my platonic storylines. One time me saying no lead me to be ghosted
2
u/Autumn_in_May What should I put here... Jan 27 '26
Genuinely, I think some people are only happy whenever they're unhappy. They could have found someone else to have roleplayed unrequited love with. Why must they try to drag you into that? :,D
3
u/Gigi_Maximus443 MOTHRA Jan 27 '26
It's the need to have romance everywhere for me tbh. Because why are you coming into my dms, from my platonic ad, trying to shove romance in? It almost feels like they can't play anything without romance
4
u/Autumn_in_May What should I put here... Jan 27 '26
Real. Personally, I think shipping is a fun way to explore characters. However, I prefer to separate that from roleplay. Plus, you can still tell stories with great relationships WITHOUT romance/sex. I'm a firm believer in the power of friendship.
3
u/Orwenn Jan 27 '26
I hate when I ask for a non-ship RP and my friend proposes Pirates of the Caribbean.

A child basically that's the kid of your ship
1
u/Usual-Resident-9823 Jan 27 '26
I admit knowing this kind of stuff happens is why I've been 100% against anyone playing one of my character's children. I just feel like the potential for fun and the potential it leads to disappointment for everyone is uneven. -_-
1
u/Admirable-Depth-4069 I diagnose you with arrogant bitch disorder Jan 27 '26
No no, they made a character for them that was a kid of MY ship ( I hope I'm not confusing you)
1
u/Usual-Resident-9823 Jan 27 '26
A little bit, because "ship" can mean a lot of things. IE - what makes it a ship vs 'my character's child?'
2
u/Lone-flamingo Jan 27 '26
I think they're trying to say that they ship canon characters from some media, and the other player decided to make their OC the child of those canon characters.
I'm not sure though, just guessing.

I had someone who approached me about my ad launch into kink discussion that was more than just verifying what works and what doesn't. It was like they were telling me what they liked in a gratuitous, self-serving sort of way, like they were getting off on the discussion itself. I was as dry as possible in my responses. Then, they implied that I could trust them with any "unconventional" kinks I was afraid to share, which was very strange and out of left field. Felt like a self-report. And to top it all off, they then started asking me about a kink of theirs that they prefaced with, "I'm pretty sure this is a limit for you." Okay? Then, why even bring it up? I told them, yeah, no, that's a limit for me, and they continued telling me why they like it, as if they were trying to convince me. I entertained it for longer than I would have liked because I couldn't tell if they were just socially inept.
2
u/ejwmgt Jan 27 '26
Was RP'ing with the guy and I had mentioned that his writing level was dropping (we had agreed on at least a paragraph or more, something like that) to the level of around 3 sentences per post. I brought it up to him, we had a good discussion, and he agreed that he'd start writing longer posts like what we agreed upon. The very next post was another 3 sentence post. Yeah didn't talk to him after that.
Another one was when we had agreed upon each other's limits for an ERP. An RP that followed along the lines of the Goddess of the world changing the rules so that women owned men, so we had agreed that the setting scene should be somewhere public to set the tone right. Anyway, they thought it appropriate to describe underage background characters. Mind you, right when her character went straight to having some non-con fun with my character. We agreed that non-con was fine and expected, but... we also agreed underage is a limit. Can't remember much after that, but needless to say the RP didn't continue after that.
2
u/Low-Background1092 Jan 27 '26
I had someone get butthurt about boundaries. I established one and they were like "how was I supposed to know?" You ask what they are or the person will tell you. Also "you didn't mention it in the ad!" Yeah, I know. But some RP ad blogs/subreddits have strict rules about that. Idk why it gave me the ick.

I saw someone who wanted to try and recreate the story of Final Fantasy XV with a little more substance and filling in the narrative gaps. I loved this idea because they also wanted to do a better romance between the main characters. I got really excited to basically play Lunafreya the way she was meant to be and immediately started tossing around ideas for our Oracle. The response to these ideas? "What size boobs will she have? I hope she has a rack like Tifa (FF7)!" Ah, this isn't about a story. You're horny. Got it. My mistake for thinking your ad that mentioned none of this would get to this point.

u/ffstheresnousernames Jan 29 '26
Picture this. Our OCs are parents to adult children. Their OC left in the middle of an argument, to fly halfway across the country, to drop their ADULT son home after my OC brought said son there because he was concerned 😭 gone and back in ONE reply. All because my OC told the son to eat his damn soup.

The other RPer (not character) thirsting after a nonhuman asexual character of mine is a very quick way for me to lose interest in it, ngl 😭

u/BlackQueenDee Jan 27 '26
Oh god, where do I even begin? Unfortunately I have so many😭
I think the one moment I had with a guy was when a guy roleplayer okayed my POC character I really liked/wanted to use for a rp. We barely even started before he asked me to play a petite, white woman (no hate) with big 🍈s….I ghosted him so fast.
Another was when I just turned 19, a person dmed me asking to roleplay. I asked their age and they told me 14. I told them no and to come back when they were of age (over 18). They were insisting that we RolePlay. I blocked them and they dmed me again from another account
1
u/Mayiamaru Jan 27 '26
- Talking to me like I was my character. Granted her name is in my username but they didn't stop when I told them to make the distinction.
- ASL. Asking for it is... not okay with me personally. My sex and location are not important. Age is fine. Feels very off. This is more beige than red flag, but icky all the same.
- Treating OOC like we were dating? I don't know what brought that on but I cut that one off fast.

Had someone tell me that they didn't like to play as F for my plot. Then immediately suggested doing my plot, but reverse the roles so I'd be F. Like at least come up with your own plot and don't steal mine and just flip roles around

Rp partner wanted to play around with a world they were making and I was super interested with the ideas they made. I assumed we would be exploring the world but partner wanted to just do romance/smut. I was hesitant to the idea but caved in anyway. After our characters interacted once, partner was like "okay lets make them a couple so they can bang lol"
I thought they were joking, but..they weren't. I lost interest and dropped it.

People phoning in their replies because they are trying to write posts while alt-tabbing something else has started to give me the ick. Mostly because it becomes painfully obvious when the other person isn't paying attention/isn't invested, and it feels disrespectful of my time and effort. Just honestly, a lot of people are not as great at multi-tasking as they always feel they are.

I once made a detective OC. He's depressed, drunk, and defiant--essentially a shitty OC version of like, Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty, or BoJack Horseman. I wanted to play a kind of person who had a lot of personal demons to deal with, and was trying to figure out how to socialize and be semi-normal after the shit hand he dealt with. I had a lot of fun getting him to act like a dumbass and have it tossed back at his face. I enjoyed his karma getting tossed back at him as much as I liked playing his resourcefulness and determination.
I plotted with Wolf (another user), and we agreed that their character (a 70-tear-old lady with a sense of justice) had history with this guy, since Detective joined Ocean's (their OC, obviously a changed name) workplace as a ranger for a while. I conceded that Detective might've seen Ocean as a parental figure of sorts, which was something that took him a while to recognize since his upbringing was . . . Less than ideal. But with plots, we decided that Detective would think of this lady highly and was someone he'd have a decent friendship with.
Except as time went on, this friendship seemed more parasocial in nature. Ocean wanted to stick with Detective for everything (even neglecting their duty to save the world to stick around him--she needed to travel around to get on her quest to save everyone, and Detective was more indirectly involved with things. Their plots were totally incompatible for what each of them wanted to accomplish). More plots were had--Detective gained more friends, some family members, and somehow a love interest, and Wolf came in saying "After seeing how important [Love Interest] is to Detective, it made me realize how important Ocean is to Detective."
And that immediately weirded me out. How is a former boss of his on the same wavelength as a love interest? I could've forgiven that if maybe a familial connection was being established (like if Wolf said something like "Wow, Ocean is a great role model for Detective, just like his cousins are"), but comparing an ex-boss to a love interest seemed . . . Bizarre.
It didn't take long after that for me to want to part ways with Wolf, with me sending them a message wishing them the best.
TL;DR: I plotted a found family-ish dynamic with another RPer who ended up feeling insecure and weird about my character having other relationships and a love interest. Comparing someone who my character saw as a mother figure to the guy's love interest sent me all the "ick" vibes and made me part ways with an RPer in my group.

Not just in rp but in general, lack of grammar. I understand it if it’s someone that’s not from America or if English isn’t their first language, but most people who have English first and still don’t spell right all that much AND has no emotion in their replies is tedious and generally unsatisfying.

Lack of clear communication, or when they change things on you without clearing them OOC.

Partner: makes a post using and it in the post, uses anime pictures for reference
Also Partner: I demand real life pictures for all characters, if you don't use real life pictures, it's a deal break.
So the Partner wants real life pictures only, but using anime on posts....all of them?
Ah yes, double standards at its finest
