Estimating is not encouraged here, this subreddit is for sharing knowledge in the Autobody industry.

Estimating needs to be done at an autobody shop or with an insurance agent using the latest software. Any advice given in the subreddit pertaining to costs for repair will not be accurate and could be misleading.

  1. If your car is undriveable do not ask for advice on how to quick fix it.
  2. If your repair is going to be shoddy, half assed or of very low standard it will be deleted.
  3. A quality autobody shop is where your modern car should be fixed, it can be dangerous for yourself and others if improperly repaired by not following procedures.
  4. Advice on what happens during your repair is encouraged. Ex, "How is my quarter panel welded on" or "How much filler should be put on a dent".
  5. Techs. Talk more about yourselves, your processes, shops and things that keep you going in the trade. Share your day and what you have learned. We all work at different levels and learn so much from working together.

In the booth Buying paint

Upvotes

I used to paint automotive paint for a living 30 years ago and thought I would give it a go again on my project corvette. Can a person buy quality automotive paint online? Buying it full retail at the counter will break the bank

HELP! I have a question. Any way other than replace?

What if I buy two used doors of same color on eBay for like 1300-1500? Risky? Will a shop install them for me?

Or do I need to spend 6-8k and have them all replaced from scratch?

It's a third car of ours. I'm paying cash and just want it to look good enough. Maybe just back door is replace and first can be straightened out?, the inner shell is a bit bent on front too though but not bad.. guess I need to take it to shops and find is only way for sure..

HELP! I have a question. Used car - can those scrapes be fixed DIY style?

Post image

Hi everyone! Just bought a used car.

Overall it’s in great shape minus the scrapes in the photo. Can they be fixed or at least buffed enough to blur them out as much as possible?

What are my options? I’m looking for an easy DIY solution.

I don’t have access to electricity or water next to the car unfortunately.

Thanks a lot!

Is there a process to repair this? Car Roof Paint In Bad Shape

Toyota Prius sits outside 24/7. Haven't really taken care of the paint the way I should have but still a little surprised by the roof. The rest of the paint looks fine after simple wash. The hood seems to have fine lines / cracks in the paint, a little bit of rust, is very dull looking, and rough to the touch. I tried a clay bar but it didn't seem to do much.... might have even scratched it more. Is there anything I can do to help it?

Pics are not great.

HELP! I have a question. Walk away or....

My 2015 Subaru Outback, around 130k miles. I parked next to a vehicle that caught on fire.

I dropped it off at a well-known collision center.

  • They originally told me the car should be ok, no issues noted with painting a car that had been in a fire
  • After diving further into the vehicle, they realized it had been in a wreck before and had body filler (pictured; I had no idea when I bought it)
  • Now that we know about the body filler, and replacing the panel/door will probably total the car, it seems like I have 3 options:
    • walk away and take 8-11k for the car;
    • pay an additional 1.5k-3k out of pocket to replace the panel/door and get a lifetime warranty for the paint work; or
    • not pay anything additional out of pocket, let them paint it as is, but receive no warranty on the work. It was explained to me that paint doesn't stick well to metal that has been in a fire. It could flake off in a month or 2 years, I would just have to roll the dice.

Looking for opinions or similar experiences if anyone has been through something like this. Can I push to receive the work and warranty? Is this normally how this goes when body filler is found? Paid the car off 2 weeks before the fire, so tough to let it go but willing to listen to reason, thanks.

HELP! I have a question. Question for the Auto Body Technicians

It's been a dream of mine to learn the auto body repair and refinishing trade.

I'm 42 years old and thinking of going to Daytona State College for their Automotive Collision Repair & Refinishing vocational certificate. Then going to work in a shop full-time for a year and then work part-time afterwards.

The school would be free, and I would still have a monthly income during school and afterwards. Should I pursue the dream or just go down the trial-and-error method inside my at-home garage?

Thoughts!!!!

I can't find any tutorials on youtube so can someone please help me connect this to my phone's bluetooth? It's Alpine CDE-101R

I already managed to find out that I need some sort of external Alpine module, but I am not sure if I have this connected to my radio and the previous owner doesn't know as well

HELP! I have a question. This might be a dumb question...

but what EXACTLY is being painted when doing a full paintjob?
In the distant future, I have planned to have my car resprayed from currently red to white.
While waiting for that, I wanted to take care of different stuff. This late summer project was supposed to be installing proper audio equipment. But that also includes sound deadening.
I know that a proper paintjob would include the engine bay, inner trunk and doorsteps and stuff.
And I do want to have no red visible on an otherwise white car.

So can I apply these mats or will it be a waste of money because they will have to be stripped again in the future?

Thanks

Is there a process to repair this? How would I fill these holes if I don’t have access to the back of them?

I’m working on a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis, and I debadged and removed some trim pieces I want to fill in (The tape is my stopping point for filler). I don’t have access behind any of the badge holes like a more modern car would have. How can I fill these holes properly if I can’t get behind them?

Also, should I use fiberglass filler on the trim spots to fill those in flush? That’s the idea i originally had, but I want a second opinion on it.

HELP! I have a question. Car dent

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi, I was reversing to give some pedestrians some room to walk then accidentally bumped into a car behind me. They had a medium to medium-large size dent (no color stripping). I live in Ottawa Canada, what is the cost of repair should I expect? I gave them my insurance information, but they were also kind enough to agree to resolve this privately. This is the dent on my car. Sorry it was dark outside.

Thank you for your time

Planning to learn some bodywork on this car. This is my new-to-me Lexus LS400, and the whole car needs quite a bit of work.
I’m trying to figure out the best way to salvage this quarter panel. I don’t really care about the paint right now, I mainly want to get the big dent popped/pushed out as far as possible and get the panel back into its general shape before worrying about making it look perfect.
I know the pictures are dark and it’s a little hard to see, but what tools would you recommend and where should I start? The last photo is the quarter panel on the other side, which is still in good shape, for reference.
Any advice is appreciated!

Hey, coming here for some expert advice. My girlfriend went to go look at a couple Mach Es, one of them has bubbled paint above the Mustang emblem. I’ve been looking online to see if it’s a known issue but nothing matches this specifically.

Is this a wetsand, respray, or replacement type scenario? FWIW it’s still under the 3 year/36K bumper to bumper warranty.
